THE EFFECTS OF NEUROFEEDBACK TRAINING IN THE COGNITIVE DIVISION OF THE ANTERIOR CINGULATE GYRUS

This study examines the efficacy of neurofeedback training in the cognitive division of the anterior cingulate gyrus and describes its relationship with cortical regions known to be involved in executive functions. This study was conducted with eight non-clinical students, four male and four female, with a mean age of twenty-two. Learning occurred in the ACcd at significant levels over sessions and in the anterior regions that receive projections from the AC. There appears to be a multidimensional executive circuit that increases in the same frequency in apparent synchrony with the AC and it may be possible to train this sub-cortical region using LNFB.

Resiliency and Optimism: An African American Senior Citizen’s Perspective

A total of 52 African American senior citizens (aged 59-99 years) were asked to participate in a study examining psychological resources (ego resilience and dispositional optimism) and the experience of racial stress as a function of geographical location (north vs. south). This is an understudied population, and African American seniors who remain relatively active within their respected communities may provide useful information regarding these psychological constructs in particular and successful aging in general. Participants completed the ego resilience, optimism, stress, and distress surveys. When collapsed across geographical location, resilience was negatively correlated with distress and positively correlated with optimism. Dispositional optimism was negatively correlated with levels of psychological distress. African American seniors who resided in the north reported significantly less distress than those in the south. Findings support resiliency and optimism as stress buffers for older African Americans.

The Computerized Self Test (CST): An Interactive, Internet Accessible Cognitive Screening Test For Dementia

The computer self test (CST) is an interactive, internet-based instrument designed to assess functional cognitive domains impaired by Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This study consisted of 215 total subjects with a mean age of 75.24. The 84 cognitively impaired patients (excluding patients diagnosed as MCI) met all criteria set forth by NINCDS/ADRDA for the diagnosis of AD. Control participants consisted of 104 age-matched individuals who were cognitively unimpaired. All patients completed the CST prior to other routine neurocognitive procedures. The CST accurately classified 96% of the cognitively impaired individuals as compared to controls, while the Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE) accurately classified 71% and the Mini-Cog 69% in the same respect. In addition, the CST accurately classified 91% of the six experimental groups (control, MCI, early AD, mild to moderate, moderate to severe, and severe) as compared to 54% for the MMSE and 48% for the Mini-Cog. In conclusions, the CST demonstrates a high degree of sensitivity and specificity and is capable of accurately identifying cognitive impairment in patients with variable degrees of cognitive abnormality. This interactive internet-based cognitive screening tool may aid in early detection of cognitive impairment in the primary care setting. The ease of use and interpretation may also provide the means to obtain an accurate baseline from which to monitor cognitive changes over time.

ObjectiveChildhood sexual abuse (CSA) has become epidemic in the United States.Estimates from grouping studies of prevalence indicate 25 to 30% of females and 8 to 10% of males have experiences of childhood sexual abuse that meet legal definitions of sexual abuse (Finkelhor, Hotaling, Lewis, & Smith, 1990).It has been associated with the development of a host of maladies including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, sexual dysfunction, suicidal ideation and attempts, as well as other self-destructive behaviors (Beitchman et al., 1992).More specifically, research indicates six categories of impairment are associated with CSA: (a) emotional reactions which are aversive, (b) perceptions of the self which are distorted and negative, (c) physical complaints, (d) somatic complaints, (e) difficulties with development of positive sexuality, (f) interpersonal relationship difficulties, and (g) difficulties in social functioning.In addition to these psychological symptoms associated with CSA, researchers have begun to look at the cerebral concomitants by examining the impact of CSA on brain structures and functions (Bremner et al., 1997;

The Inverse of Psychopathology: A Loreta EEG and Cortisol Examination

Low resolution electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded from 63 nonclinical adults (34 female and 29 male) while they completed inventories on self-perception (Self-Perception and Experiential Schemata) and psychological well-being (The Brief Symptom Inventory-18).In addition, salivary samples were collected before and after the self-assessment tasks for cortisol analyses.The statistical analyses revealed a significant decrease in cortisol levels from pretest to posttest self-examination.This decline in salivary cortisol was inversely correlated with greater left-sided than right-sided hemisphere activation.Self-perception and self-in-relation to others predicted resting salivary cortisol levels.These data provide further evidence for the use of LORETA EEG, in particular, as a biological marker for emotional self-regulation.

EEG Biofeedback as a Treatment for Substance Use Disorders: Review, Rating of Efficacy, and Recommendations for Further Research

Electroencephalographic (EEG) biofeedback has been employed in substance use disorder (SUD) over the last three decades. The SUD is a complex series of disorders with frequent comorbidities and EEG abnormalities of several types. EEG biofeedback has been employed in conjunction with other therapies and may be useful in enhancing certain outcomes of therapy. Based on published clinical studies and employing efficacy criteria adapted by the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback and the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research, alpha theta training—either alone for alcoholism or in combination with beta training for stimulant and mixed substance abuse and combined with residential treatment programs, is probably efficacious. Considerations of further research design taking these factors into account are discussed and descriptions of contemporary research are given.

LORETA Neurofeedback: Odd Reports, Observations, and Findings Associated with Spatial Specific Neurofeedback Training

Neurotherapeutic techniques continue to advance in sophistication and complexity, and as such so does the need to reference odd occurrences or adverse reactions as a result of training in different regions of the brain.This is important to the field of neurotherapy in addition to those practitioners who may encounter patients on medications at the time of training, and this type of information can only add to the armamentarium of tools at our disposal.We discuss noted odd occurrences that have transpired during our studies employing LORETA neurofeedback (LNFB) in both children and adults.We also discuss negative events reported by patients or parents and medications interactions with LNFB.Positive results are also discussed.The field of neurofeedback can benefit immensely from more reports of this type.
