Effect of Microwave Oven Drying on Production of Quality Dry Flowers of Roses

The study was carried out at the experimental farm of the Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan. The data was taken for four flushes, that is, Flush I (November, 2017), Flush II (April, 2018), Flush III (June, 2018) and Flush IV (August, 2018). The cultivars selected for the experiment were Avalanche, Confetti, Corvette, First Red, Gavanna, Gold Strike, Hollywood, Nobelesse, Peach Avalanche, Sweet Avalanche, Taj Mahal and Tineke. After giving different drying treatments, dried flowers were scored on quality parameters i.e. flower colour, texture, brittleness and shape retention. The results of the study suggested that Taj Mahal can be used as a suitable cultivar for drying in Microwave oven during November (Flush I) and April (Flush II) flushes and Corvette during June (Flush III) and August (Flush IV) flushes.

Floral biology and seed setting studies in Dianthus barabatus L

Dianthus barbatus commonly known as Sweet William belongs to the family Caryophyllaceae. It is an important flower crop which is generally used in borders, pots, beds and also as a cut flower. Studies on its floral biology and seed setting were conducted in the Department of Floriculture and Landscaping of Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry at Nauni-Solan during 1997-1998. The flowers were pedicillate, hermaphrodite, hypogynous, actinomorphic and pentamerous. The plant was 48.35 cm tall with eight number of side shoots. Number of flowers on main shoot were 94 and average flower size was 1.94 cm. Inflorescence initiation took 160 days from date of seed germination while flowering duration was 5 days. The entire systematic development of floral buds was divided into 6 different stages and flower bud took 16 days for full development Maximum flower anthesis and pollen dehiscence was observed between 10-12 AM, while cloudy days slower down both the processes. Maximum pollen germination was seen in 6 per cent sucrose media. Pod formation took 11 days from the date of flower anthesis. The best pollination method was found to be artificial pollination two days after anthesis hence, giving highest number of seed per capsule and capsule set. Maximum seed germination was found in trays filled with sieved soil, sand, FYM (1:1:1, v/v).

Evaluation of lilium (Lilium spp.) germplasm for growth, flowering and bulb production under midhill conditions of Himachal Pradesh

The experiment was conducted evaluate lilium (Lilium spp.) germplasm at the experimental farm of Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, Nauni, during 2008–09 under shade net conditions planted in a randomised block design. Lilium (Lilium spp.) is one of the important geophytes, having attractive flowers, appealing colours and durable spikes. Of the 14 cultivars of lilium, nine belonging to Asiatic group and five to LA Hybrid group, were evaluated under All India Coordinated Floriculture Improvement Project to work out their feasibility for commercial cultivation in the midhill areas in Himachal Pradesh. Among Asiatic cultivars, maximum (73.27 cm) plant height was noticed in cv. ‘Brunello ’. Maximum number (3.93) of flowering buds/plant were observed in cv. ‘Toscana ’. Longest bud length (8.45 cm) and largest flower size (17.81 cm) were found in cv. ‘Prato ’. Earliest flowering was noticed in cv. ‘Apeldoorn ’(56.80 days). Among LA hybrids, plant height (108.27 cm) and number of flowering buds (4.33) were maximum in cv. ‘ Lateya ’. Longest bud length (9.05 cm) and largest flower size (17.96 cm) were noticed in cv. ‘Litouwen ’. Earliest flowering (69.80 days) was observed in cv. ‘Brindsii ’. Under Asiatic lilium cultivars, maximum bulb size (3.48 cm) and bulb weight (24.25 g) were found in ‘Prato ’. Maximum bulblet size (2.14 cm) and weight (5.19 g) were found in cv. ‘Grand Cru ’. Under LA Hybrid lilium, maximum bulb size (4.20 cm) and bulb weight (29.08 g) were found in ‘Litouwen ’. Maximum bulblet size (2.53 cm) and weight (8.02 g) were found in cv. ‘Litouwen ’.

Influence of biofertilizers on leaf nutrient status and flower quality of carnation cv Sunrise

The experiment was conducted under naturally ventilated polyhouse to study the influence of biofertilisers on leaf nutrient status and flower quality of carnation cv Sunrise. The plants were inoculated with biofertilizers arbuscular mycorrhiza + Azospirillum + phosphate solubilizing microorganisms and then fertigated with water soluble fertilizers. This treatment was compared with the plants which were only given water soluble fertilizers and commercial straight fertilizers. Significant variation was observed in leaf nutrient status as influenced by different fertilization treatments. Biofertilizers supplemented with water soluble fertilizer treatment resulted in maximum nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content. Maximum stem length and stem sturdiness were recorded in the plants given biofertilizer treatment.

Advancing Quality and Productivity in Floricultural Crops through CRISPR/Cas9Technology

Worldwide demand for Flowers is rising with time. Today, floriculture is the most important agricultural commodity traded commercially. While the formation of remarkable flower varieties has been greatly aided by conventional breeding procedures like hybridization and mutation breeding, there is still potential for substantial advancement in 􀏔lower productivity as well as quality. Producers and consumers are seeking novel qualities that are of significance through modern breeding techniques. Through genetic modification, traits like fragrance, distinct blossom colour, altered 􀏔lower structure and shape, vase life, scent, and capacity to withstand both biotic and abiotic stresses have been developed. The CRISPR- (Cas) protein system, which consists of short palindromic repetitions that are grouped and are regularly spaced, has developed into a powerful genome-editing instrument to precisely alter genetic encodings at designated sites. It serves as an excellent way of enhancing floriculture crops genetically. CRISPR-Cas9 is crucial for agricultural crops because it may improve blooming traits including color modification, prolong flower shelf life, encourage the emergence and maturation of flowers, and use techniques for genome editing to change desirable foliage’s colour. Among many other advantageous traits, Cas9/CRISPR genome editing is helpful in creating new varieties with improved fragrance and essential oils (Sirohi et al. 2022). A CRISPR/Cas tool that can separate from the Cas9/gRNA construct to prevent comparable changes by CRISPR/Cas generates stable gene mutations. CRISPR/Cas gene is a rapid and precise genetically engineered crop technology that produces crops resistant to abiotic and biotic stresses, viruses, fungus and bacteria in a fraction of the time compared to crops generated using conventional methods, which take ten to fifteen years to achieve resistance. Thus, CRISPR/Cas is a helpful tool for producing agricultural products in a sustainable manner. This technology has been used to successfully modify plant characteristics. Nutrient management for cutting production in carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus)

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of nutrient management on cutting production of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.). The experiment consisted of five fertilizer modules with four cultivars and it was laid out in factorial randomized block design with three replications. Findings of the experiment revealed that fertilizer module FM5 comprising of 20-5-5 g/m2 NPK as basal application along with 200 ppm N + 280 ppm K as fertigation given twice a week resulted in the production of cuttings with maximum stem diameter (0.75 cm), weight of cutting (5.22 g), number of cuttings/plant/harvest (4.25), total number of cuttings (16.98) and yield of cuttings/square metre (152.78). Amongst the cultivars, Madras exhibited the maximum stem diameter (0.82 cm), weight of cutting (4.60 g), number of cuttings/plant/harvest (3.80), total number of cuttings/plant (15.12) and yield of cuttings/square metre (152.78), while, cultivar White Wedding recorded minimum stem diameter. Interaction effect revealed that module FM5 wasfound to be best in getting good quality cuttings in cultivars Farida, Niva and Madras which gave the maximum number of cuttings/plant/harvest, total number of cuttings/plant, yield of cuttings/metre square and weight of the unrooted cuttings. In cultivar White Wedding, fertilizer modules FM4 consisting of 20-15-10 g/m2 NPK (as basal) along with 175 ppm N and 245 ppm K (fertigation twice a week) gave the best quality cuttings. The time taken for first and successive harvesting of cuttings varied with the season with minimum days during summer and maximum days during winter.

DUS testing of cut-flower orchids

Distinctiveness, Uniformity and Stability (DUS) testing provides rights for breeders to exploit or develop new plant varieties, to allow access to foreign varieties with widen gene pool, to promote intensive breeding activities and to prevent unauthorized varieties exploitations. In the present investigation, 41, 14, 11, 9, 50 and 40 hybrids of Cymbidium, Dendrobium, Vanda, Cattleya, Phalaenopsis and Oncidium, respectively, were studied for development of DUS test guidelines using common descriptors. In Cymbidium, out of 66 characteristics, pseudobulb size, inflorescence length, number of flowers, flower width, flower duration, flower predominant color, lip ornamentation, blooming time; in Dendrobium, among 60 characteristics, plant height, internode length and number, inflorescence length, flower width, lip colour, and ornamentation and flowering time and in Vanda, among 66 characteristics, plant type, internode length, leaf type, spike length, flower number, inflorescence colour, sepal and petal ornamentation, lip shape, colour and ornamentation, spur length and flowering time were used for grouping of hybrids. In Cattleya, among 53 common descriptors developed, plant height, leaf number/ pseudobulb, flower width in front view, petal predominant colour, lip predominant colour and lip colour pattern and in Phalaenopsis, among 58 common descriptors developed, plant size, flower width in front view, petal predominant colour and colour pattern, predominant colour and colour pattern of apical lobe of lip whereas in Oncidium among 60 common descriptors, plant type, leaf number per basal leaves /pseudobulb, flower width in front view, petal main colour, petal colour pattern, lip main colour and lip colour pattern were used for grouping of hybrids.

DUS Test Guidelines in <i>Mokara</i> Orchids

According to UPOV Convention 1961, DUS (Distinctiveness, Uniformity and Stability) testing is essential to provide and promote an unique way to protect plant varieties with the objective of developing new plant genotypes and for the usefulness of consumers. This provides rights for breeders and farmers to utilize or evolve new strains of plants, to exploit alien genotypes having broad gene pool, to encourage intensive breeding methods and to inhibit exploitations of unauthorized genotypes. In the present study, 8 genotypes of Mokara were evaluated for preparation of DUS test guidelines with a number of morphological characters. Among 61 common descriptors developed, plant width, number of flowers/inflorescence, flower length, flower width, dominant colour of dorsal sepal, dominant colour of lateral sepal, petal dominant colour, dominant colour of lip apical lobe and throat colour of lip were selected for grouping of genotypes.
