Behaviors of Lead and Zinc in Top Submerged Lance (TSL) Plant at Sukpo Zinc Refinery

The Sukpo Zinc Refinery of Young Poong Cooperation (YPC) has recovered zinc and lead from zinc residue by using top submerged lance (TSL) technology since 2007. This recycling operation, named the "TSL Plant", was designed to operate 2 furnaces each equipped with one top submerged lance. The operation performance shows good metal recoveries. The plant is currently measuring oxygen pressure in its slag bath to respond to the varying slag bath conditions instantly. This paper describes the behaviors of lead and zinc acquired by determining the oxygen pressure in the slag bath and the results of measurements are compared with those of the thermodynamic calculations.

본 논문은 바이메탈(bi-metal)에 부착된 열확장 코어 광섬유의 높은 구부림 손실 효과를 이용한 광섬유 온도 센서를 제안 및 구현하였다. 바이메탈(bi-metal plate)의 온도 변화에 의한 변형은 열확장 코어 광섬유의 구부림 손실을 발생시킨다. 실험결과 소자의 감도와 측정범위는 열확장 코어 광섬유의 구조를 조절하여 제어 될 수 있음을 보였다. 소자의 제조공정이 상세하게 기술되었다. In this paper, we have proposed and demonstrated a simple fiber-optic temperature sensor based on the bending loss of a TEC(thermally expended core) fiber attached to a bi-metal. The deformation of the bi-metal caused by the change in its temperature induces the bending loss of the TEC fiber. The experimental result shows that the temperature sensitivity and operation temperature range of the device are controllable through the adjustment of the structure of the expanded core fiber. The fabrication procedure of the device is described in detail.

Composition Region fo Homogeneous Liquid Phase in Lead-Containing Slags Related to QSL Process.

As a fundamental study to control compositions of the slag in the oxidation zone of a QSL lead smelting furnace, phase equilibrium between the metallic lead and the PbO-FeOx-CaO-SiO2 or PbO-FeOx-CaO-SiO2-ZnO slag was investigated at 1,323∼1,523 K and a composition region of the homogeneous liquid slag phase and the composition and chemical formula of solid phases in the slag coexisting with the liquid phase were determined. The PbO-FeOx-CaO-SiO2 slag with Q (= mass % CaO/(mass % CaO + mass %SiO2)) of 0.4 is completely fusible at 1,423 K when the mole fraction ratio of FeOx , R, defined as R = NFeOx /(NFeOx NCaO + NSiO2 ), is around 0.4, and departure from this value gives rise to a solid-liquid two phase region in the range of the low PbO content. This result indicates that the QSL process, which is operated practically with R of about 0.4, is quite reasonable. Solubility of ZnO in the PbO-FeOx-CaO-SiO2-ZnO slag with Q = 0.4 and R = 0.4 at 1,423 K decreases with increasing PbO content in the composition range between 0 and 18 mol % PbO, then increases in the range between 18 and 33 mol % PbO, and finally becomes stagnant at about 18 mol % ZnO in the composition range above 33 mol % PbO. This result has an important meaning for the QSL operation using a charge with a high content of zinc. Hence, it is considered that precautious control of the PbO content in the slag is required for avoiding formation of a solid phase in the slag.

In order to clarify the behavior of the metallurgical phases in the oxidation zone of the QSL lead smelting process, the phase equilibrium between the metallic lead and the PbO-FeOx-CaO-SiO2or PbO-FeOx-CaO-SiO2-ZnO slag was investigated at 1, 423 K. The EMF method using a solid electrolyte with calcia-stabilized zirconia was applied to measure the oxygen partial pressure in the system. The oxygen pressure increases with increasing PbO content in the slag. The PbO activity and activity coefficient estimated from the oxygen pressure increase with the addition of CaO into the slag. However, the PbO activity is slightly affected by the FeOxcontent at constant PbO concentration in the experimental region. Itwas clarified that ZnO gives a small effect to the activity coefficient of PbO in the PbO-FeOx-CaO-SiO2-ZnO slag. The partial pressure of the PbO component in the gas phasecalculated by using the PbO activity coefficient in the slag isconsiderably small compared with that of metallic lead.
