An Improved Low-Voltage Ride-Through Control Strategy of Doubly Fed Induction Generator During Grid Faults

This paper presents a control strategy to improve the low-voltage ride-through capability of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG); since the stator of a DFIG is directly connected to a grid, this sort of machine is very sensitive to grid disturbance. Grid voltage sag causes overcurrents and overvoltages in rotor windings, which can damage the rotor-side converter (RSC). In order to protect the RSC, a classical solution based on installation of the so-called crowbar is adopted; however, as the DFIG absorbs reactive power from the grid, this type of solution deteriorates grid voltage sags and cannot meet the requirements of a new grid code. An improved control strategy which uses virtual resistance to limit rotor side overcurrents is proposed in this paper, which can make a crowbar inactive and supply reactive power to fulfill the latest grid code requirement during voltage sags. In order to validate the proposed strategy, simulations and experiments have been carried out, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

Simulation of Power System in Cape Verde with Simulink® Considering Wind Farm

Wind Power System connected to electric grid has been increased in the last years. In order to investigate its dynamic behavior and influence into the grid, simulation method can be used to study the performance of overall power systems. In this paper, the Power System in Cape Verde is modeled and simulated with MATLAB/Simulink ^® considering Wind Farm. The model of wind turbine DFIG, the diesel generator, the transmission line and the load are presented on details. It is implementing in environment block for SimPowerSystems Phaser Models. The simulation results for Santiago Island case study are shown and discussed.

Investigation into the On-Resistance Shift Phenomenon of 650V Commercial GaN Power Devices with Different Structures

The unique two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) structure in GaN-on-Si planar GaN enables excellent performance, but it also brings negative effects such as current collapse, threshold voltage offset and on-resistance $(\boldsymbol{R}_{\mathbf{dson}})$ shift. This paper investigates the effects of voltage, temperature and switching mode (hard/soft switching) on the $\boldsymbol{R}_{\mathbf{dson}}$ of GaN power devices, specifically for 650V commercial GaN power devices with different structures from GaNsystems, Nexperia and Visic. This paper also presents a GaN on-resistance test platform to observe the $\boldsymbol{R}_{\mathbf{dson}}$ shift process within 10 hours. The results show that $\boldsymbol{R}_{\mathbf{dson}}$ shift is a common problem for all three GaN power devices under test. The degree of on-resistance shift is positively correlated with the drain voltage and negatively correlated with the junction temperature. In addition, soft switching can effectively suppress $\boldsymbol{R}_{\mathbf{dson}}$ shift by avoiding simultaneous high voltage and high current.

An adaptive dead-time compensation method for sinusoidal PWM-controlled voltage source inverter with output LC filter

A novel dead-time compensation method for voltage source inverter (VSI) with output LC filter is proposed. The analysis shows that the dead-time effect is eliminated at most zero-crossing zone of the inductor current, if the zero current clamp phenomenon is ignored. Conventional dead time compensation isn't suitable owing to the fact the dead-time compensation is needless in zero-crossing zone for VSI with LC filter. The proposed dead-time compensation method is based on adjusting promptly the compensation voltage in accordance with the situations of inductor current in theory. However, it is difficulties to determine seven situations around the zero current clamping (ZCC), as the seven situations of inductor current are variable with change of the load current, DC voltage. Thus, an improved inductor current detecting method with high precision is presented, which estimates the inductor current by detecting load current instead of inductor current. Therefore, the proposed dead-time compensation method is based on compensation voltage according to the three zones (positive zone, zero-crossing zone, and negative zone) of estimated inductor current in practice. The simulation and experiment results show the validity of the analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed dead-time compensation.

Design and implementation of distributed control system for cascaded H-Bridge multilevel STATCOM

Concentrated control system (CCS) has been used for almost all reported cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) multilevel static synchronous compensators (STATCOM's). However, the CCS can not achieve "true" modular implementation. This paper presents a novel distributed control system (DCS), which combines one central controller and several cell controllers. The central controller is responsible for the upper-layer control including dc voltage loop and output current loop. The dc capacitor voltage balancing control and pulse-width modulation (PWM) algorithm are implemented by each cell controller. In DCS, each cell is treated as an independent power unit with its own controller. This makes modularization easier. Moreover, the software in the central controller and dc voltage detecting circuits become very simple compared with the traditional CCS. Some practical issues of the proposed DCS are discussed in detail. A novel dc voltage balancing method which can be implemented independently in each cell controller is proposed. A seven-level CHB STATCOM prototype is built. The validity of the proposed DCS and dc voltage balancing strategy is verified by the experimental results.

A Variable Step Maximum Power Point Tracking Method Using Differential Equation Solution

Solar power is considered as a kind of "clean power". The problems of using solar power include varying weather condition brings different power output of the photovoltaic cells, which may cause a serious waste of solar power. For solving this problem, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) strategy is required to make Solar cells keep giving maximum power under different environment condition. In this paper, a variable step MPPT method is proposed for faster and more precise tracking process, based on an applicable solar cell model. The new MPPT method gives a second order convergence speed, compared with the traditional MPPT methods, which always behave as one order convergence. According to the applicable solar cell model, a series of differential equations are established to describe the MPPT process, and the maximum power point is present as the solution of those equations. Using a Newton iterative method can not only get the solution of the equations, but also set up ever search step of the tracking process. A matlab-simulink model was established as a two stage PV system including a DC/DC regulator and a load converter to analysis the performance of the proposed MPPT strategy. Simulation result in the last part proved that this MPPT method is practical with a better performance than the traditional strategies.

Analysis and calculation of DC-link current and voltage ripple for three-phase inverter with unbalanced loads

In this paper, the analysis and calculation of the dc-link current and voltage ripple are presented for three-phase inverter with unbalanced load. The average and rms values of the dc-link current are derived. It is found that the rms value is independent of the modulation strategy and switching frequency. Apart from the high frequency harmonics, the current and voltage ripple consists of double fundamental frequency harmonic, which is different from the balanced load. Moreover, the peak-to-peak value of the dc-link ripple voltage caused by the double fundamental harmonic is calculated. Experimental results are shown to verify the accuracy of the theoretical analysis. The analytical and calculated results can be used to guide the dc-link capacitor design.

A Backpropagation Neural Network-Based Explicit Model Predictive Control for DC–DC Converters With High Switching Frequency

The explicit model predictive control (MPC) can solve the piecewise control laws offline to save online implementation burden. However, many offline control laws have to be stored to adapt the operating point variation, the correct control law needs to be searched, and the control parameter needs to be calculated. The large storage and computational burdens make the explicit MPC difficult to be applied to the scenarios with high switching and control frequencies. To solve these problems, this article proposes to utilize a backpropagation neural network (BPNN) to fit the input-output relationship of the offline control laws under different operating points. It not only guarantees the control performance but also reduces the storage and computational burden. Such a BPNN method directly calculates the control parameter in a parallel way and thus eliminates serial evaluation of the searching process. Simulation results are provided and compared with the state-of-the-art controls to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Experimental results demonstrate that a BPNN with 49 parameters can fit more than 10 000 offline control laws, and its implementation can be completed within three clock cycles by field-programmable gate array (FPGA) or application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), so the 1-MHz switching and control frequency can be achieved with 4-MHz clock frequency.

SRF-PLL based sensor-less control strategy using improved dead-beat controller for direct-driven permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)

This paper has proposed a sensor-less control strategy for direct-driven permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Synchronous rotating frame phase lock loop (SRF-PLL) that employs model based back elector-motive force (EMF) estimation is utilized to derive rotor position angle and speed. To steadily achieve the sensor-less vector control, a first order compensator is applied in cascade with the estimated back EMF. Then, an improved dead-beat controller based on luenberger predictive algorithm is presented to compensate for the one-step delay, further enhancing the robustness against motor parameter deviations and whole sensor-less control performance. Finally, experimental results are shown to illustrate that proposed sensor-less strategy and controller design scheme could well achieve high performance vector control of the PMSG.

A Review of SiC IGBT: Models, Fabrications, Characteristics, and Applications

Along with the increasing maturity for the material and process of the wide bandgap semiconductor silicon carbide (SiC), the insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) representing the top level of power devices could be fabricated by SiC successfully. This article presents a thorough review of development of SiC IGBT in the past 30 years. The progresses of models, structure design, and performance in SiC IGBT are summarized. The challenges resulting from fabrication process and switching characteristics are discussed and analyzed in detail. The experimental results and existing problems in SiC IGBT-based applications are summarized in the end.
