Low thermal conductivity and enhanced thermoelectric performance of Gd-filled skutterudites

With Fe compensation, the heavy rare earth element Gd-filled GdyFexCo4−xSb12 (x<2) skutterudites have been successfully synthesized by melting-annealing approach. Fe substitution on the Co site brings two contrary effects on Gd filling: charge compensation which enhances the filling fraction of Gd, and Lattice expansion which is deleterious for the stability of filled compounds that contain smaller atoms. When Fe content is less than 1.7, pure GdyFexCo4−xSb12 compounds are obtained and the Gd maximum filling fraction (ymax) increases with Fe content. The power factor (S2σ) of the GdyFexCo4−xSb12 increases with Fe content. The lattice thermal conductivity is significantly depressed by Gd filling. The sample Gd0.41Fe1.48Co2.52Sb12 has a lattice thermal conductivity as low as 1.1 W m−1 K−1 at room temperature, and its figure of merit (ZT) reaches a maximum value of 0.83 at 700 K. At high temperature, thermal conductivity shows significant increase due to bipolar diffusion, which obstructs obtaining higher ZT.

Transport Characteristics and River-Blocking Possibilities of Debris Flows in Namudang Gully, Lhoka Prefecture of Tibet, China

Predicting the possibilities of river blocked by debris flow is critical for disaster prevention and mitigation. In this paper, taking Namudang gully in Sangri County, Lhoka Prefecture of Tibet as an example, we studied the characteristics and analysed the river-blocking possibilities of debris flows in the gully based on field survey and laboratory tests. Results showed the debris flow was viscose debris flow with densities of 2.0 g/cm3, 2.1 g/cm3 and 2.2 g/cm3 at 20-year, 50-year and 100-year recurrence intervals, respectively. And the corresponding debris flow discharges were 69.39m3/s, 105.71m3/s and 150.72m3/s, respectively. On this basis, we used Ratio of Discharge per Unit Width to predict the possibilities of river blocked by debris flows in the gully. Calculating results showed that, at 20-year recurrence intervals, debris flow do not block the river, only resulting in contraction of channel cross-section, and however, at 50-year and 100-year recurrence intervals, debris flows will block Qusong River. The results agreed with the field survey, which meant the "Ratio of Discharge per Unit Width" is feasible for predicting the possibilities of river blocked by debris flows.

A convenient designation for the optimal hydraulic cross-section of “Rectangle-V” shaped drainage canal of viscous debris flow

The "Rectangle-V" shaped drainage canal is one of the most-widely used engineering measures in debris flow prevention in the west mountain area in China. The cross-section shape and size of the "Rectangle-V" shaped drainage canal are important parameters in the design. How to choose the shape and size to let the drainage canal have the optimal drainage capacity is rarely revolved before. This paper discusses the design of the optimal hydraulic cross-section. First, the parameter of cross-section size (F) and characteristic parameter of cross-section (S) are defined. Then, the calculation formulas of F and S are deduced. It indicates that F and S are only related to the transverse slope coefficient(I _C ) under the optimal hydraulic condition. At last, the calculation formulas of the optimal hydraulic depth and width of the drainage canal are deduced. Taking Xinqiao gully, a first-order distributaries in the upper Min River after "5.12" earthquake as an example, this paper designs the optimal cross-section of the drainage canal of viscous debris flow. Compared to the other design methods, the method can confirm the shape and the sizes of "Rectangle-V" shaped drainage canal of viscous debris flow. And the calculated result is the only confirmed value, while the calculating method is convenient and efficient and can be adapted to the actual engineering.

Impacts on Reconstruction and Developing Degrees Evaluation of Debris Flows Following the Wenchuan Earthquake in Beichuan County,Sichuan,China

The debris flow hazards followed the Wenchuan earthquake have been the key restricting factor to the restoration and reconstruction in Beichuan County.The developing degrees evaluation of debris flow is of great significance to the reconstruction.Using ArcGIS technology and multi-factor superposition method,the developing degrees of debris flows in Beichuan County followed the Earthquake was evaluated based on the field survey and remote sensing interpretation.Landslides density,formation lithology,seismic intensity,slope gradient,surface roughness,and average annual precipitation were selected as evaluation factors and each of them was subdivided into five grades.Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) was used to determine the weights of factors and quantify each grade.On that basis,multi-factor weighted superposition evaluation model was constructed and used to evaluate the developing degrees of debris flow in the study area.According to the evaluation results,the study area was divided into three areas:high growth area,medium growth area and low growth area.The high growth area concentrated on the hanging wall of Beichuan-Yingxiu Fault and distributed along Leigu-Qushan-Chenjiaba townships,accounting for 6.6% of the study area.The medium growth area located on both sides of the high growth area and mainly on the hanging wall of Beichuan-Yingxiu Fault,accounting for 22.5% of the study area.The rest belonged to low growth area,accounting for 70.9% of the study area.It was suggested that human activities should avoid debris flows in the high growth area and debris flow disaster evaluation should be conducted in the medium growth area to ensure no disaster threat,or must avoid debris flow,too.
