Mobile-based wide area pest surveillance and advisory services for horticultural crops in Haryana

The development and implementation of ICT based pest monitoring and advisory system was an innovative idea to speed up the process of providing timely and correct pest management advice to the farmers. The system captured a total of 20,754 pest incidence, recorded through pest-specific scientific methods during 2018–20 and produced reports of pest status in farmer fields vis-a-vis pest ETL. Based on these pest reports, experts submitted 1,971 pest management advisories into the system which were disseminated to 7000 registered farmers of 9 districts of the state, through 4,49,465 SMSs during the years. The timely availability of correct pest management information greatly helped in minimising crop losses. The system also helped in the quick identification of pest hot spot areas and thus preparing the state agencies to effectively manage the pest problems in those areas. This also helped in the promotion and awareness of integrated pest management among the farmers. Implementation of appropriate pest management strategies by the farmers led to increasing in crop yield and avoidance of pest epidemics during the period. Besides, the system created a centralised pest data repository which could be utilised for drawing inferences in future. Such a database combined with a weather database could be a potential source for the development of forewarning models of insects and diseases.

On Farm Implementation of Sustainable IPM Technology and its Economic Analysis for Bitter Gourd Involving Farmers’ Centred Approach in Haryana

Area-wide field experiments were conducted in bitter gourd during 2014-2016 at Karnal, Haryana to study validation and economic viability and feasibility of adaptable and rational IPM technology involving farmers’ driven holistic approach. The adoption of IPM technology, apart from lowering the incidence of major pests, reduced the number of chemical sprays to 5-9 from 15-17 in non-IPM fields with higher yields of 31.3, 22.3 and 18.75 mt/ ha in IPM compared to 29.5, 20.8 and 17.45 mt/ ha in non-IPM fields with marginally higher CBR of 1:1.80, 1:1.54 and 1:1.91 in IPM than 1:1.60, 1:1.30 and 1:1.68, respectively, in FP fields. There was a net income increase of Rs 23718.1, 35079 and 32403/ ha in IPM fields over FP fields. On an average, IPM farmers harnessed higher net return of Rs. 1.27 lakh/ ha with B:C ratio of 1:1.75 compared to the non-IPM farmers with net return of Rs. 0.97 lakh/ ha with a B:C ratio of 1:1.52.

Seasonal Incidence of Rusty Thrips <i>Chaetanophothrips signipennis</i> with Applied ICT-Based Pest Surveillance in Banana

Under the study, pest surveillance with applied ICT in Banana (Musa sp.) was carried out to assess seasonal activity and damage due to rusty thrips Chaetanophothrips signipennis (Bagnall) from 2012-2022. Wide-area pest surveillance was carried out in major banana growing areas of Maharashtra, using ICT tools for the timely and correct observation of pest activity. The ten seasonal year’s data on the rusty thrips monitoring revealed that August and September are the peak months for severe incidence. The results documented that, September is the plausible month for peak incidence with fruit damage ranging from 26-50%. Heatmap, cluster dendrogram and principle component analysis also confirm the severity of thrips during August and September. The initiation of management options before the onset of August and September may greatly help the farming community.

Bayesian network for decision-support on pest management of tomato fruit borer, H. armigera

Fruit borer (H. armigera) is the key pest of tomato, a prominent vegetable crop grown in northern plains of India. Timely availability of decision-support to the farmers on ‘whether and what management option is required’ is imperative for effective pest management. For decades, the pest economic threshold level (ETL) has been the basis to select an appropriate pest management option. This process requires quantitative information about pest activity, which needs to be scientifically observed in the farmers’ fields. However, a large section of the farming community is not able to scientifically obtain this kind of information. Moreover, in current pest management, decision-making depends upon a large range of agro-ecological information, besides pest activity. In this study, a Bayesian network-based method/model was devised for the selection of an appropriate management option for the effective management of fruit borer in tomato crop, based on tentative agro-ecological information, beside pest activity, that farmers provided. Thus, the resulting method can be used in decision support systems of agriculture with applies information and communication technology to automate and speed up the process of providing pest management decision-support to the farmers.

Decision tree induction model for forecasting the pest Gesonia gemma on soybean based on abiotic factors

Severe incidence of semilooper species complex comprising of Gesonia gemma Swinhoe, Chrysodeixis acuta (Wlk.), Diachrysia orichalcea (Fabricius) and Mocis undata Fabricius was noticed in the state of Maharashtra between 2009 and 2012. Inadequate knowledge on the factors influencing the dynamics of this pest complex is one of the main reasons for control failures. Data were collected from Akola and Amaravathi districts of Maharashtra on the incidence of semiloopers along with weather data to develop the pest forecasting models for planning management strategies. The data mining technique using decision tree induction model has been proposed for forecasting the incidence of semiloopers. Weather data like maximum temperature, minimum temperature, relative humidity, rainfall and number of rainy days in a week were considered to build the model. The results of Shannon gain ratio revealed that among all the abiotic factors minimum temperature played a major role on pest incidence.

ICT Based Pest Management System for Sustainable Pulse Production

“E-National Pest Reporting and Alert System” in pulse crops is a unique ICT based decision support system, which is very effective and easy to operate through a centralized server system at National Centre for Integrated Pest Management, New Delhi, connected with internet and mobile phones. This system has developed to cater to the needs of rural farmers of India, who grow pulse crops. The useful information is collected, stored, processed, and interpreted, and the appropriate advisories are sent to the registered farmers through centralized server system. They apply suitable corrective measures as per advisories at right time, and thereby, heavy loss caused by various pests can be checked/minimized below economic threshold level. Based on the past experiences and larger response of the stakeholders, Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, Govt. of India, suggested that this program should be extended and implemented in all pulse growing states. This system is quiet useful bottom to top level officials/policy makers, involved in E-Pest Surveillance programme.
