One‐Pot Synthesis of Pd‐Loaded SnO₂ Yolk–Shell Nanostructures for Ultraselective Methyl Benzene Sensors

Abstract A continuous, single‐step, and large‐scale preparation of Pd‐catalyst‐loaded SnO 2 yolk–shell spheres is demonstrated. These nanostructures show an unusually high response and selectivity to methyl benzenes, such as xylene and toluene, with very low cross‐responses to various interfering gases, making them suitable for precise monitoring of indoor air quality.

Metal–Organic Framework-Derived Hollow Hierarchical Co₃O₄ Nanocages with Tunable Size and Morphology: Ultrasensitive and Highly Selective Detection of Methylbenzenes

Nearly monodisperse hollow hierarchical Co3O4 nanocages of four different sizes (∼0.3, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 μm) consisting of nanosheets were prepared by controlled precipitation of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) rhombic dodecahedra, followed by solvothermal synthesis of Co3O4 nanocages using ZIF-67 self-sacrificial templates, and subsequent heat treatment for the development of high-performance methylbenzene sensors. The sensor based on hollow hierarchical Co3O4 nanocages with the size of ∼1.0 μm exhibited not only ultrahigh responses (resistance ratios) to 5 ppm p-xylene (78.6) and toluene (43.8) but also a remarkably high selectivity to methylbenzene over the interference of ubiquitous ethanol at 225 °C. The unprecedented and high response and selectivity to methylbenzenes are attributed to the highly gas-accessible hollow hierarchical morphology with thin shells, abundant mesopores, and high surface area per unit volume as well as the high catalytic activity of Co3O4. Moreover, the size, shell thickness, mesopores, and hollow/hierarchical morphology of the nanocages, the key parameters determining the gas response and selectivity, could be well-controlled by tuning the precipitation of ZIF-67 rhombic dodecahedra and solvothermal reaction. This method can pave a new pathway for the design of high-performance methylbenzene sensors for monitoring the quality of indoor air.

Gas Sensing Characteristics of Sb-doped SnO₂Nanofibers

Undoped and Sb-doped $SnO_2$ nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning and their responses to $H_2$, CO, $CH_4$, $C_3H_8$, and $C_2H_5OH$ were measured. In the undoped $SnO_2$ nanofibers, the gas response ($R_a/R_g$, $R_a$: resistance in air, $R_g$: resistance in gas) to 100 ppm $C_2H_5OH$ was very high(33.9), while that to the other gases ranged from 1.6 to 2.2. By doping with 2.65 wt% Sb, the response to 100 ppm $C_2H_5OH$ was decreased to 4.5, whereas the response to $H_2$ was increased to 3.0. This demonstrates the possibility of detecting a high $H_2$ concentration with minimum interference from $C_2H_5OH$ and the potential to control the gas selectivity by Sb doping.

Thin‐Wall Assembled SnO₂ Fibers Functionalized by Catalytic Pt Nanoparticles and their Superior Exhaled‐Breath‐Sensing Properties for the Diagnosis of Diabetes

Abstract Hierarchical SnO 2 fibers assembled from wrinkled thin tubes are synthesized by controlling the microphase separation between tin precursors and polymers, by varying flow rates during electrospinning and a subsequent heat treatment. The inner and outer SnO 2 tubes have a number of elongated open pores ranging from 10 nm to 500 nm in length along the fiber direction, enabling fast transport of gas molecules to the entire thin‐walled sensing layers. These features admit exhaled gases such as acetone and toluene, which are markers used for the diagnosis of diabetes and lung cancer. The open tubular structures facilitated the uniform coating of catalytic Pt nanoparticles onto the inner SnO 2 layers. Highly porous SnO 2 fibers synthesized at a high flow rate show five‐fold higher acetone responses than densely packed SnO 2 fibers synthesized at a low flow rate. Interestingly, thin‐wall assembled SnO 2 fibers functionalized by Pt particles exhibit a dramatically shortened gas response time compared to that of un‐doped SnO 2 fibers, even at low acetone concentrations. Moreover, Pt‐decorated SnO 2 fibers significantly enhance toluene response. These results demonstrate the novel and practical feasibility of thin‐wall assembled metal oxide based breath sensors for the accurate diagnosis of diabetes and potential detection of lung cancer.

Data from Alterations in Gemin5 Expression Contribute to Alternative mRNA Splicing Patterns and Tumor Cell Motility

<div>Abstract<p>The role of Gemin5 in alternative mRNA splicing, tumor cell motility, and proteomic instability was investigated. Isotope Capture Affinity Tag proteomic analysis was conducted on MDA-MB-435 tumor cells transfected with either a control vector (C-100) or the Nm23-H1 metastasis suppressor (H1-177). Ingenuity pathway analysis revealed that RNA posttranscriptional processing was the most prominent class of differentially expressed proteins. Within this category, overexpression of Acinus1, Poly(a) binding protein, HNRPA2B1, Bop1, and Gemin5 was confirmed in less metastatic H1-177 cells. Overexpression of the latter four proteins was also observed in the lower metastatic antisense Ezrin transfectant of a murine osteosarcoma model system, confirming the general relevance of the trends. Gemin5, a component of the spliceosomal complex, was chosen for further study. Analysis of global mRNA splicing by SpliceArray chips revealed that 16 genes were differentially spliced in C-100 compared with H1-177 cells; transient transfection of <i>gemin5</i> into C-100 cells restored the splice pattern to that of H1-177 cells. Alternative splicing patterns for the engulfment and cell motility 1 and thrombospondin 4 genes were confirmed by semiquantitative reverse transcription-PCR. Gemin5 overexpression coordinately reduced C-100 cell motility by 50%, and siRNA-mediated reduction of Gemin5 expression increased the motility of H1-177 cells by 2-fold (<i>P</i> < 0.004). The data provide the first demonstration that alterations in the expression of a spliceosome protein can effect both specific splicing events and tumor cell motility. The data also show that changes in mRNA splicing patterns accompany metastatic progression, which may contribute to proteome instability. [Cancer Res 2008;68(3):639–44]</p></div>

Trimethylamine Sensing Characteristics of Molybdenum doped ZnO Hollow Nanofibers Prepared by Electrospinning

Pure and Mo-doped ZnO hollow nanofibers were prepared by single capillary electrospinning and their gas sensing characteristics toward 5 ppm ethanol, trimethylamine (TMA), CO and $H_2$ were investigated. The gas responses and responding kinetics were dependent upon sensing temperature and Mo doping. Mo-doped ZnO hollow nanofibers showed high response to 5 ppm TMA ($R_a/R_g=111.7$, $R_a$: resistance in air, $R_g$: resistance in gas) at $400^{\circ}C$, while the responses of pure ZnO hollow nanofibers was low ($R_a/R_g=47.1$). In addition, the doping of Mo enhanced selectivity toward TMA. The enhancement of gas response and selectivity to TMA by Mo doping to ZnO nanofibers was discussed in relation to the interaction between basic analyte gas and acidic additive materials.
