Expatriate selection: An empirical study identifying significant skill profiles

Abstract Effective selection procedures constitute an important factor in increasing expatriate success. However, research lacks findings regarding which skills to screen in international selection processes and whether to base expatriate selection on a culture‐specific or culture‐general skill profile. In an attempt to gather such evidence, an empirical study was conducted in the United States and Germany. Managers in both nations judge intercultural communication skills and intercultural sensitivity to be important intercultural competencies. Moreover, culture‐specific skills seem to be required when engaged in both a U.S. and German working context. Recommendations for complementing culture‐general and culture‐specific skill profiles are discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The intercultural communication motivation scale: An instrument to assess motivational training needs of candidates for international assignments

Abstract The Intercultural Communication Motivation Scale (ICMS) is a tool to assess the intercultural communication motivation of candidates for international assignments. The ICMS performed well in four studies conducted with undergraduate students in New Zealand, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and Germany. Generally showing a stable fi ve‐factor structure, high test‐retest correlations, very high Cronbach's alphas, and almost no social desirability bias in self and peer evaluations, the ICMS is sensitive enough to detect test‐retest differences. Thus, socially responsible strategic international HR programs can use this scale to reliably evaluate employees and their families for specifi c international locations. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

La digitalizzazione dei dati idrometrici della rete cantonale

La disponibilita di dati idrologici di qualita e determinante per molteplici attivita, legate all’utilizzo delle risorse idriche e non solo. In questo contributo si discutono le motivazioni che hanno portato al progetto di digitalizzazione dei dati della rete idrometrica cantonale. Si presentano i primi risultati ottenuti con la messa a disposizione di tutti i dati in formato elettronico, che consente di valorizzare le informazioni idrologiche disponibili nel Cantone Ticino e di calcolare in maniera piu precisa le principali statistiche delle portate dei corsi d’acqua misurate dalla rete idrometrica cantonale.

The Development of Gender-Responsive Indicators: Towards a Participatory Approach

There is an increasing level of importance around evidence-based policy making and a growing interest in big data in the field of gender equality. Most of the research has been about the amount of data, so much less is known about the quality of data that is needed to be transformative and which indicators should be selected. Poorly selected indicators often lead to the representation of simplified social realities and tend to reproduce gender stereotypes. Thus, one of the biggest challenges in big data is the development of quantitative and qualitative gender-responsive indicators that take into account the contextual interpretation of concepts such as wellbeing and the social realm of beneficiaries. Given this background, the aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of the indicator development and selection process as a crucial step towards gender equality. We argue that a participatory research approach, involving the social contexts of involved stakeholders and target groups, offers a promising way to collaboratively improve indicators. This approach allows the development of indicators, which measure policy impacts from an all-inclusive gendered perspective and consider the complexity of programme implications and social conditions.
