Signatures of A universal spectrum for atmospheric interannual variability in rainfall time series over the Indian region

Abstract A recently developed non‐deterministic cell dynamic system model for atmospheric flows is summarized in this paper. The model predicts quantum‐like mechanics for atmospheric flows with inherent long‐range spatiotemporal correlations, now identified as signatures of self‐organized criticality or deterministic chaos. The model enables quantification of the power spectrum of temporal fluctuations of atmospheric flows in terms of the universal and unique characteristics of the statistical normal distribution. The model predictions are in agreement with continuous periodogram analysis of three sets each of 30 years (1871–1900, 1901–1930, 1956–1985) and one set of 25 years (1931–1955) summer monsoon rainfall time series for 29 meteorological subdivisions in the Indian region. The important results of the present study are as follows. (i) The power spectrum of the temporal fluctuations of rainfall follows the universal inverse power law form of the statistical normal distribution, with the square of the eddy amplitude representing the eddy probability density corresponding to the normalized standard deviation t equal to (logλlogλ 50 )‐1; where λ is the period length in years and λ 50 the period up to which the cumulative percentage contribution to total variance is equal to 50 and t =0. (ii) Periodicities in rainfall up to 3–4 years contribute to as much as 50 per cent of the total variance. A universal spectrum for interannual variability in summer monsoon rainfall indicates predictability of the overall pattern of rainfall fluctuations. A relatively recent and short period rainfall time series, such as the 30‐year period 1956–1985 in this study, enables identification of the universal structure of atmospheric variability. Further, short period fluctuations that are major contributors to interannual variability can be identified accurately in the 30‐year data sets and provide means for estimating the near future (up to 4 years) rainfall variation.

SIGNATURES OF A UNIVERSAL SPECTRUM FOR ATMOSPHERIC INTERANNUAL VARIABILITY IN COADS SURFACE PRESSURE TIME SERIES

Annual and seasonal mean global surface pressure time series for the 25 years 1964–1988 obtained from the Comprehensive Ocean Atmosphere Data Set (COADS) were subjected to quasi-continuous periodogram spectral analysis. Periodogram estimates are summarized in the following: (i) the atmospheric interannual variability exhibits a broadband (eddy continuum) structure; (ii) the spectra follow the universal inverse power-law form of the statistical normal distribution; (ii) periodicities up to 5 years contribute to as much as 50 per cent of the total variance; (v) the high- and low-frequency El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycles of respective periodicities 3–4 years and 4–8 years and interdecadal oscillations are present in all the data sets. The inverse power-law form for power spectra is ubiquitous to real-world dynamical systems and is identified as a signature of self-organized criticality or deterministic chaos. The above results are consistent with a recently developed cell dynamical system model for atmospheric flows, which predicts self-organized criticali ty as intrinsic to quantum-like mechanics governing atmospheric flow dynamics. Identification of self-organized criticality in annual and seasonal mean surface pressure fluctuations and its unique quantification implies predictability of the total pattern of fluctuations. A universal spectrum for interannual variability rules out linear trends in atmospheric surface pressure patterns.

Time Evolution and Frequency Distribution of Point Discharge Current

In fair weather or in the steady state condition of the atmosphere when there are no local generators of electricity, the air earth conduction current play the role of charge transfer between the atmosphere and the surface of the earth.While in the disturbed weather the Point Discharge Current (PDC) and the current due to flash to ground play an important role in the transfer of charge from cloud to the ground.Among these currents, point discharge current is important as it contributes significantly to the global electrical circuit.The present study deals with the analysis of point discharge current data collected for a total of 65 thunderstorm days occurred during six year period at Pune (18°32' N, 73° 51' E, 559 m asl).These data have been analyzed to study their temporal variation and then further subjected to statistical analysis to study their frequency distribution.Gaussian model is applied to examine the results statistically.

Spatio‐temporal variability of lightning activity over the Indian region

Spatio‐temporal variability of lightning activity over the Indian land mass region (8°N–33°N, 73°E–86°E) has been studied using monthly satellite based lightning flash grid (5° × 5°) data for 5‐year (1998–2002) period. These data have been examined for depicting the annual, seasonal, and spatial distribution of the lightning activity. The study revealed the nonlinear relationship between lightning flash density and latitude on the annual timescale, and it is linked with the convective activity, large‐scale circulations, land mass gradient, and orography of the region under study. On the seasonal timescale, the nonlinear positive relationships were observed in the premonsoon and monsoon seasons whereas a bimodal variation is observed in the post‐monsoon season. The comparison of flash density with maximum surface air temperature shows the existence of nonlinear relationship between the two parameters. The approximate range of increase of flash density per 1°C rise in temperature is 20 to 44%. The lightning flash density shows a pronounced semiannual oscillation over the latitude belts 8°N–28°N.

Testing the Feasibility of a Digital Point of Care Solution for the Trusted Near Real-Time Bidirectional Exchange of Novel and Informative Adverse Event Information

Abstract A digital point-of-care solution was implemented to test the feasibility of near-real-time bi-directional communication between pharmacovigilance experts (PVEs) and healthcare professionals (HCPs) for exchanging unique and informative adverse event (AE) information. The solution was implemented in a commercially available electronic health record (EHR) system/platform, no direct contact between PVEs and the HCPs was possible. The Clinical Affairs team of the EHR vendor was used as an intermediary to ensure appropriate information was exchanged while protecting HCP and patient privacy. The study yielded 9 drug-event pairs of interest (AEI), 2 of which were confirmed as AEs by the HCP. On average it took 20.6 h to receive initial AEI information and 58.8 h to receive follow-up information, which represents a 96% reduction in time compared to current methods. Both interactions provided unique data that would not have been collected otherwise leading to the PVE being able to appropriately determine a potential causal association. This study successfully demonstrated the feasibility of using a compliant, bi-directional, digitally enabled clinical communication channel at the point of care to complement existing pharmacovigilance activities.

Markov chain models for pre‐monsoon season thunderstorms over Pune

Abstract The probabilistic distribution of the thunderstorm phenomenon during the pre‐monsoon season (1 March to 18 June) over Pune, a tropical Indian station, has been examined with the help of Markov chain models using daily thunderstorm data for a period of 11 years (1970–80). The data have also been tested using Akaike's information criterion. This test has clearly indicated that the first‐order Markov chain model is the best fit model for thunderstorm forecasting, which has described the appropriate period (8 days) of occurrence of thunderstorm phenomenon over Pune. Further, the steady‐state probabilities and mean recurrence time of thunderstorm days and non‐thunderstorm days have also been calculated for the first‐ and second‐order Markov chain models. These computations have revealed that the observed and theoretical values of steady‐state probabilities are realistically matched. Copyright © 2002 Royal Meteorological Society.
