Heterosis and Combining Ability in Cowpeas

Extent of heterosis and combining ability were studied in a diallel cross of cowpeas for yield, pod length, seeds per pod and 100-seed weight. Heterosis in yield seemed to be influenced by heterosis in pod length and seeds per pod. The best hybrid combination for grain yield was C 34 × C 85 which showed heterosis over mid parent to the extent of 39 per cent.

Chickpea Evaluation for Cold Tolerance under Field Conditions

Chickpea ( Cicer arietinum L.) yields are higher when plantings are made in early winter in the Mediterranean region instead of during the traditional spring season, but winter killing is often a problem. Cold tolerant chickpea cultivars are needed to successfully utilize a winter sowing approach. A study was conducted at the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), Tel Hadya, Syria during 1982 to 1983 with the objective of developing a field screening technique for cold tolerance in chickpea, and to identify sources of tolerance. A set of previously identified tolerant, intermediate, and susceptible lines was sown from mid‐fall to early spring. All susceptible lines sown during October were killed from cold injury, showing that the crop was more susceptible at the late vegetative stage than at the seedling stage. Consequently, a field screening technique was proposed, with an October sowing date to allow the crop to grow to the late vegetative stage before the onset of severe winter. Susceptible checks are grown at frequent intervals and evaluation takes place after the death of the susceptible check. This is followed by confirmation of tolerance. A 1 to 9 visual score was used to evaluate germplasm for cold tolerance. A total of 3276 germplasm accessions and breeding lines were evaluated from 1981 to 1987. Twenty‐one lines were identified as tolerant. Cold tolerance was not associated with the phenotypic traits of leaflet area, seed size, time to maturity, plant height, or growth habit.

A field experiment was conducted during winter (Rabi) season of 2019-20 at Agricultural Research Farm, Department of Agronomy, R.B.S. College, Bichpuri, Agra (U.P.) the investigation entitled effect of bio fertilizers on nitrogen use efficiency and productivity of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The variables involve in this study four nitrogen levels viz. N1 (60 kg ha-1) N2 (90 kg ha-1), N3 (120 kg ha-1) N4 (150 kg ha-1) was sown with three biofertilizers such as (Control-B0, Azotobacter -B1, and Azospirillum-B2). Thus in all 12 treatments combinations were compared in a Split plot design having cultivars sown in main plots nitrogen levels and sub plot in biofertilizers with four replications. The experimental results revealed that wheat crop nitrogen levels N4 (150 kg ha-1) + B2 (Azospirillum) obtained significantly higher grain yield (54.71 q ha-1) and straw yield (91.04 q ha-1) followed by nitrogen levels N1, N2, N3 and Bio-Fertilizer levels B0 (control), B1 (Azotobacter).

Equating organic farming to conventional farming- what are the economic facets of the former?

Organic–conventional comparisons—which comprise the majority of research contrasting agrarian and industrial methods—are contested in prominent public and scholarly forums. Moreover, the effectiveness of organic systems in comparison to conventional systems is often used in favor of or against funding for research and extension initiatives aimed at promoting organic farming. Therefore, this study expected to pave the way for projecting the cost-benefits analysis, as compared with the conventional type of agriculture, practiced by the farmers in Haryana. The study uses an exploratory research design. The research type is qualitative and quantitative type of research. The data are collected mainly through secondary sources. The economic viability of organic farming system is assessed by estimating costs, returns and profits. The organic farms selected in this manner are a series of case studies (a judgment sample). The data have been analyzed and drawn the inferences with the applications of the statistical techniques such as i.e. Descriptive Statistics. The results disclose that the organic farming is relatively economically successful than the conventional type of the agricultural practices, as highlighted by some of the modelers projections.

Studies on mate seeking behaviour and anemotactic response of Tropical Warehouse Moth, Ephestia cautella (Walker) to (Z,E)‐9,12‐tetradecadienyl acetate

Abstract The effect of different concentrations of (Z,E)‐9,12‐tetradecadienyl acetate on the mate seeking and upwind anemotactic behaviour of Ephestia cautella was observed. The mating rate was inversely related to the anemotactic flight at all levels of pheromone. The extensive mating was observed during low degree of flight. No effect of (Z,E)‐9,12‐tetradecadienyl acetate was observed on calling females. Anemotactic zigzagging flight was observed to be very high at the interval of 5–15 min at 10 3 ng, while upwind anemotactic straight flight was recorded to be poor in comparison to zigzagging flight at all levels of pheromone. The highest upwind anemotactic response was observed at 10 4 ng during the interval of 5–15 min. Moreover, olfactory studies (anemotactic response) indicate the decrease in response to increasing dosages of pheromone. Zusammenfassung Untersuchungen über die Partnersuche sowie das anemotaktische Verhalten von Ephestia cautella (Wlk.) bei Anlockung mit (Z,E)‐9,12‐tetradecadienyl Acetat Die Wirkung verschiedener Konzentrationen von (Z,E)‐9,12‐tetradecadienyl Acetat auf die Partnersuche und das anemotaktische Verhalten von E. cautella wurden untersucht. Bei allen Konzentrationen des Pheromons stand die Paarungsquote im umgekehrten Verhältnis zum anemotaktischen Flug. Die umfangreichste Paarung wurde bei geringer Flugstärke beobachtet. Es bestand keine Wirkung des Pheromons auf die Weibchen. Ein anemotaktischer Zickzackflug war im Intervall von 5–15 Min. bei Darbietung von 10 3 ng Pheromon sehr stark, während ein windaufwärts gerichteter geradliniger Flug bei allen Pheromonkonzentrationen nur schwach ausgeprägt war. Der stärkste Aufwindflug fand bei 10 4 ng Pheromon im Intervall 5–15 Min. statt. Die olfaktorischen Studien zur anemotaktischen Reaktion zeigen außerdem die abnehmende Wirkung des Pheromons mit dessen zunehmender Konzentration.
