We present a simulation model constructed in collaboration with Intel Corporation to measure and gauge the interaction of non-linear supply chain phenomena (such as waste, uncertainty, congestion, bullwhip, and vulnerability). A representative model that mimics part of Intel's supply chain from fabrication to delivery is modeled using discrete-event simulation in ARENA. A "phenomena evaluation" framework is proposed to link model inputs and supply chain phenomena in order to evaluate supply chain configurations. Using a sample supply chain decision (safety stock level determination) we follow the "phenomena evaluation" framework to illustrate a final recommendation. Results show that our supply chain phenomena evaluation approach helps better illustrate some trade-offs than an evaluation approach based only on the traditional metrics (cost, service, assets etc.).
In this article the network configuration for fulfillment and distribution of online orders of two British retailers is analyzed and compared. For this purpose, it is proposed a conceptual framework that consists of the key following aspects: network configuration, transportation management and location of demand. As a result is not obvious to determine the ideal centralization degree in each case. Finally, it is suggested the future development of an analytic tool that helps to choose the most appropriate model.
In order to explore the relationship between political violence and social protest, this paper deals with the subject matter from the theoretical perspective of the political process and the mobilization of resources in a case study: the alterglobalist mobilizations in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco in the context of the III Summit of the Heads of State and Government of Latin America, Europe and the Caribbean (alcuE) in May of 2004. Through a qualitative research design, it analyzes the complex interrelationship between the organizations and globalist collectives, their cultural frames and history of contention, and the dynamics of the local political process, in order to understand how these factors influenced the dynamics of the protest events and conditioned the episodes of political violence in its two main forms: physical and symbolic.
En el articulo se analizan ciudades de Latinoamerica, como referencia de areas metropolitanas en rapido crecimiento Englishn spite the vital social and economic role of freight movement, urban planning has not properly considered the intensity of urban freight needs in mobility and urban development plans. Even though most cities continuously revise and update such plans, attention to systemic urban freight solutions has been scant. Most policy decisions have focused on access restrictions to freight vehicles, particularly to dense urban areas, having limited effectiveness overtime. In this paper, we review the key challenges of freight operations in congested urban areas, we introduce tools and present policy recommendations. In addition, we analyze several Latin American cities as a reference for fast-growing metropolitan areas.
EnglishThis paper proposes an algorithm to cluster customers into delivery territories that allows consumer-packaged goods companies to efficiently distribute their products. The algorithm is based on a speed profile, which is associated to the road network. The algorithm computes time- dependent trees, traverses them following a post-order sequence and builds compact and balanced territories satisfying vehicle capacity and working time constraints. It was applied to a beer company in Mexico-City, yielding better solutions than traditional approaches.
