Upon treatment of 1-aryl-4-ethoxycarbonyl-5-amino-1,2,3-triazoles (1) with excess acetic acid, acetic anhydride, acetyl chloride, benzoyl chloride, formamide, etc., fourteen new derivatives of 1 were obtained in good yields, such as, 1-H-4-ethoxycarbonyl-5-arylamino-1,2,3-triazoles (2b-d), 1-RCO-4-ethoxycarbonyl-5-arylamino-1,2,3-triazoles (3a-d), 1-aryl-4-ethoxycarbonyl-5-acetylamino-1,2,3-triazoles (4a-d) and 1-formoyl-4-ethoxycarbonyl-5-p-nitrophenylamino-1,2,3-triazole (5a), 1-benzoyl-4-ethoxycarbonyl-5-p-nitrophenylamino-1,2,3-triazoles (5b), 1-p-chlorobenzoyl-4-ethoxycarbonyl-5-p-nitrophenylamino-1,2,3-triazoles (5c). Some of them were rearrangement products. Structures of all heterocyclic compounds were identified by elemental analyses, IR, 1HNMR and MS. Inhibiting effects of some compounds on B. substilis, E. coli, E. aerogenes and S. aureus were also screened.
To assess health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among chronic stroke survivors and factors associated with it.Cross-sectional survey study of patients who had survived one year or more after a stroke. Subjects consisted of stroke patients attending the outpatient clinic of a rehabilitation centre. HRQOL was assessed using the Medical Outcomes 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), functional status using the Modified Barthel Index (MBI), and mood using the Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI).A total of 100 patients (63 men and 37 women, mean age 60.7 +/-10.8 years) were interviewed at an average of 22.2 +/-14.5 months post-stroke. The mean MBI was 88.9 +/-17.9, and the prevalence of depression 24%. 50 percent of patients needed varying degrees of care for their activities of daily living. The SF-36 scores of the patients were comparable to that of the general population except for the domain of physical function, which was much lower (23.9 versus 83.4). Age, sex, post-stroke duration, MBI score and side of hemiplegia were not associated with HRQOL. Depressed patients however had significantly lower SF-36 scores across all domains except for that of physical function and bodily pain (p-value is less than 0.001).A significant proportion of chronic stroke survivors attending the rehabilitation clinic continue to face limitations in their physical activities. In addition, almost 30 percent of these survivors have depression that affects their HRQOL adversely.
OBJECTIVE Ovarian cancer treatments are often impeded by drug resistance. It has been proposed that microRNA (miRNA) expression patterns may play a role in drug resistance among ovarian cancers. The present study investigated the relationship between resistance to the cancer drug paclitaxel and miRNA expression. MATERIALS AND METHODS We compared the expression patterns of miRNA genes in paclitaxel-sensitive (SKOV3) and paclitaxel-resistant (SKOV3-TR30) cell lines. RESULTS Expression of the miR-134 gene cluster was found to be significantly lower in the paclitaxel-resistant cell line than in the paclitaxel-sensitive cell line, while the expression of the miR-17-92 gene cluster was significantly higher in the paclitaxel-resistant cells. An analysis of miRNA target gene protein expression revealed that several targets of miR-17-92 were significantly altered between the two cell types. CONCLUSIONS The higher expression of miR-17-92 and lower expression of mi-134 and the associated alterations of target gene expression may be associated with the drug-resistant nature of some ovarian cancers.
In May 1975, one female mountaineer and eight male mountaineers of our country once more climbed onto the highest peak of the world Mount Qomolangma from the north slope. At the same time, we recorded 15 electrocardiograms while they were climbing from 7,600 m to the peak(8,848.13m) through radio-operated electrocardiography. In this report we mainly analyze the characteristics of electrocardiogram of six mountaineers who ascended the peak at the stage from 50 m a. s. l. to over 8,200m a. s. l. The result proves that although obvious changes after reaching an altitude above 8,200 m from the plain region should be those of indexes of heart rates, the QRS axis, Q-TR, Q-T/T-Q, P wave and T wave, there is no T wave diphasic, inverted, flat or abnormal shifting of S-T segment in the electrocardiogram of these outstanding mountaineers. This fully proves that those summit climbers are of excellent constitution and good adaptation ability to hypoxia. This also shows that the people who have been trained and acclimatized under hypoxia conditions (including permanent altitude residents and native lowlanders) can maintain normal physiological functions under ultra-anoxia for quite a long time.
Eighteen patients with spinal epidural abscess were seen at the Tientsin Medical College Hospital 1957-1977. Presentation was uniform, with back pain and local tenderness, fever and leucocytosis, then the appearance of neurologicaspol deficit, tending to paraplegia with 48 hours. There had been an infection elsewhere in 14 cases, one followed vertebral osteomyelitis and in three the origin was unknown. Diagnosis was made by lumbar puncture, either by aspiration of pus or myelography. The infective organism was Staphylococcus aureus in all cases. Treatment was by laminectomy and removal of pus and granulation. Of 12 patients with leg weakness for less than 48 hours before surgery, five made good recovery, four improved but remained with a disability, two were unchanged and one died. None of the cases paraplegic for over 48 hours showed any improvement and 2 died. The importance is urged of early diagnosis and swift and vigorous treatment.
