Hydrogels: A Journey from Diapers to Gene Delivery

Hydrogels are the biomaterials comprising network of natural or synthetic polymers capable of absorbing large amount of water. Hydrogels are "Smart Gels" or "Intelligent Gels" which can be made to respond to the various environmental conditions like temperature, pH, magnetic/electric field, ionic strength, inflammation, external stress etc. There are numerous potential applications of hydrogels in modern day life ranging from a diaper to gene delivery. This review succinctly describes the classification, properties and preparation methods along with numerous diverse applications of hydrogels like agricultural hydrogels, hydrogel for drug delivery, sensing, dental adhesives, wound healing and tissue regeneration, diet aid and gastric retention and in tissue engineering etc. Hydrogels can be regarded as highly valuable biomaterials for human-beings. Castor oil has gained momentous attention as a valuable bio-based monomer and a potential alternative to the current petrobased polyol for synthesizing polyurethane due to the presence of inherent hydroxyl group. In spite of its huge potentiality very little has been reviewed regarding the development of polyurethane from castor oil. This review thus highlights the recent trends and development in the field of polyurethane and its nanocomposite based on castor oil including its biodegradability and weatherability studies. Further, this review also provides an insight regarding the utilization of castor oil based polyurethane and its nanocomposite for coating application.

A Candid Approach to Clay Modification via Dehydroxylation for Nanocomposites Application: Investigation of Degradation Kinetics, Reaction Model, and Flammability

A candid approach to thermal dehydroxylation was used for the modification of clay, to achieve improved thermal stability of a polymer nanocomposite. The modification of clay using alkyl ammonium salt has been found disadvantageous due to various aspects; hence the approach to dehydroxylation was an innovative step to overcome the difficulties in achieving a thermally stable polymer clay nanocomposite. Therefore, a detailed study of thermal stability of polymer clay nanocomposites has been carried out using isoconversional TGA methods of Flynn–Wall–Ozawa and Kissinger. Also, the reaction model involved in the decomposition process of polypropylene (PP) and its nanocomposites have been investigated. From the thermal kinetic analysis, it was clear that the thermal dehydroxylation method can be used as an effective approach for clay modification and the use of organic alkyl ammonium salt can be avoided. Furthermore, to predict the flame-retardant effectiveness of the thermally dehydroxylated clay, the cone calorimeter analysis was carried out. A comparison of the flame-retardant effectiveness of the organophillic clay and thermally dehydroxylated clay was presented.
