SmartDSM: a layered model for development of demand side management in smart grids

Growing power demand and carbon emissions is motivating utility providers to introduce smart power systems. One of the most promising technology to deliver cheaper and smarter electricity is demand side management. A DSM solution controls the devices at user premises in order to achieve overall goals of lower cost for consumer and utility. To achieve this various technologies from different domains come in to play from power electronics to sensor networks to machine learning and distributed systems design. The eventual system is a large, distributed software system over a heterogeneous environment and systems. Whereas various algorithms to plan the DSM schedule have been proposed, no concerted effort has been made to propose models and architectures to develop such a complex software system. This lack of models provides for a haphazard landscape for researchers and practitioners leading to confused requirements and overlapping concerns of domains. This was observed by the authors in developing a DSM system for their lab and faculty housing. To this end in this paper we present a model to develop software systems to deliver DSM. In addition to the model, we present a road map of software engineering research to aid development of future DSM systems. This is based on our observations and insights of the developed DSM systems.

Evaluation of Buccal Corridors in Patients Seeking Orthodontic Treatment in Different Types of Malocclusion at Tertiary Care Hospital

There are many factors that make an appealing smile, and the buccal corridor is one of the most crucial smiling characteristics. Objective: To evaluate the width of buccal corridors in patients with different types of malocclusions seeking orthodontic treatment at tertiary care hospital LUMHS Jamshoro/Hyderabad. Methods: 93 subjects were studied. Patients were asked to smile fully to measure buccal corridor width with a vernier caliper. The buccal corridor was estimated by multiplying the maxillary interproximal width by the inner lip corner distance by 100. They were divided into 5 modes by buccal corridor percentage. i-e: Buccal corridor 2% (wide smile), Buccal corridor 10% (nearly a wide smile), Buccal corridor 15% (mediocre smile), Buccal corridor 22% (nearly a narrow smile), Buccal corridor above 22% (narrow smile). Angle's malocclusion classification classified all patients. Results: The mean age was 19.18. Males were 34.4% and females were 65.6%. With various types of buccal corridors among them, 37 participants were in a class I malocclusion, 43 were in the class II and 13 were in the class III malocclusion. 14 participants belongs to medium narrow buccal corridors (15.1%), 18 belongs to the medium buccal corridors (19.4%), 47 belongs to the medium broad buccal corridors (50.5%), and 14 belongs to broad buccal corridors (15.1%). The results showed that there was no significant association between these two variables having p-value 0.207. Conclusion: Medium broad buccal corridors were seen more frequently in various types of malocclusion

Efficiency of 5% Sodium Hypochlorite in The Removal of Dental Fluorosis Stains

Dental fluorosis is a specific disturbance in tooth formation, and is defined as a chronic, fluoride-induced condition in which enamel development is disrupted. Objective: To test the efficiency of 5% sodium hypochlorite in removing dental fluorosis stains. Methods: A 5 percent solution of NaOCl was used in each case. It was administered with a cotton applicator to the whole surface of the teeth, and it was repeated until the NaOCl solution had evaporated. After treatment, a follow-up assessment was conducted by a vita shade guide. Results: Patients with dental fluorosis aged 12 to 20 were enrolled in the study. 32 men (59.3%) and 22 women were studied (40.7%). One patient (1.9%) had completed college. There were 23 (42.6%), 23 (42.6%) and 05 (09.3%) cases with inadequate socioeconomic status. One in ten people (or 18.5%) had a family history of fluorosis. 26 (48.1%) brushed once, 23 (42.6%) brushed twice, and just 05 (09.3%) brushed three times. There were 25 mild instances, 15 moderate cases, 10 severe cases, and 4 severe dental cases (DF). 5% sodium hypochlorite was efficacious in 40 (74.1%) and 14 (24.9%) cases of mild to severe dental fluorosis. Conclusion: The 5% sodium hypochlorite was found to be an efficient method for eliminating dental fluorosis lesions in this investigation. Non-invasive and safe procedure for these lesions. No additional supplies are needed, and it may be used on children's permanent teeth with ease. To support the efficacy of a bigger sample size, further studies are recommended.

SBEO: Smart Building Evacuation Ontology

Semantically rich depiction of the concepts for context-aware indoor routing brings appealing benefits for the safety of occupants of smart spaces in emergency evacuation. In this paper, we propose Smart Building Evacuation Ontology (SBEO3), a reusable ontology for indoor spaces, based on three different data models: user, building, and context. We provide a common representation of indoor routing and navigation, describe users? characteristics and preferences, grouping of individuals and their role in a specific context, hazards, and emergency evacuation. Among other characteristics, we consider abilities of individuals, safety and accessibility of spaces related to each person, intensity, impact, and severity of an emergency event or activity. SBEO is flexible and compatible with other ontologies of its domain, including SEAS, SSN/SOSA, SEMA4A, and empathi. We evaluate SBEO based on several metrics demonstrating that it addresses the information needs for the context-aware route recommendation system for emergency evacuation in indoor spaces. In the end, a simulation-based application example exploits SBEO using Context-Aware Emergency Evacuation Software (CAREE)4.

Comparison of Shear Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets with Fifth and Eighth Generation Adhesive Systems

Introduction: Self-etching primers (SEPs) has streamlined orthodontic braces placementprocess by minimizingclinical process, chairside time and has enhanced patient comfort. Materials & Methods: 60 untreated extracted premolars from all quadrants of jaws of males and females, aged between 12-35 years, were included. Defective, restorative and anomalous premolars were excluded. Attachment of brackets on the facial surface, with composite (Transbond XT 3M UNITEK) which then was cured for 20 seconds by a light source, using Transbond XT (fifth generation) and Futurabond DC (eighth generation) as bonding agents was done. Universal testing machine was used to test Shear bond strength (SBS), in COMSATS. Results: Group 1 had 22.87 ± 6.08 years as average age,whilegroup 2 had 20.67 ± 5.20years.34 patients (56.67%) were males and 26 (43.33%) were females. Group 1 (fifth generation) had an average SBS of 16.40 ± 3.47 MPa, and in Group 2 (eight generation), it was 34.9 ± 4.02 MPa. Conclusion: The research concluded, that in brackets average SBSwith generation eight wass superiorto the onesattached with fifth generation adhesive. Photographic Facial Soft Tissue Analysis by Means of Linear Measurements in Adult Pakistani Population

Background: Achieving pleasant and well balanced face is primary objective of orthodontic management. Comprehending facial tissues and acceptable range of structures, allows formulation of treatment plan. Objectives: This study rationale was to establish mean linear photogrammetry norms for adult Pakistanis, to aid in diagnosis, planning of treatment, esthetics and stability in the therapy results, for local population. Methods: A cross sectional study, on 78 subjects from Fatima Memorial Hospital and undergraduate scholars of Fatima Memorial College of Dentistry. Gathered data was logged and examined in SPSS 20. Quantitative variables were expressed as mean and standard deviation. Categorization ofgender and age was carried out to check distractors and independent t-test was used, with p-value ≤ 0.05 as significant statistically. Result: Result of this research exhibited marked variation in genders for length of lower lip, which was shorter in females than males. The length of lower lip which was significant on the basis of gender, was statistically insignificant on the basis of age. All other parameters showed statistically insignificant difference on the basis of gender and age. Conclusion: This research concluded that average values for gender and age for linear parameters must be used while planning cases for orthodontic therapy ofpatients of Pakistani origin.
