SAR image quality analysis model

Abstract : The report describes a SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) image quality analysis and an image quality model incorporating the conclusions of the image quality analysis into a SAR system digital simulation. The objective of the model and its development program is to provide a fundamental approach for SAR image quality effects for specific SAR systems (parameter combinations performing specific missions). The model thus provides a relatively economical prediction of the information which can be extracted from a specified radar- mission configuration. The model output is a collection of image quality assessment functions, in particular the TQF (Threshold Quality Factor). Other parameters, which indicate the performance of the SAR system, are available from the digital simulation. These include the point target response (both range and azimuth) along with their locations for a preselected target field configuration.

Signature Recognition for Nuclear Detonations

Experiments have been performed on the recognition of nuclear detections by using coherent optical data-processing systems. The data, E-field signals recorded with a 10 khz bandwidth, were available from only ten events, all airdrops. Since the signals were of an unknown form, they were classified into sub-groups by using a cross-correlation technique. Spatial carrier-frequency filters, constructed for these signals, were then tested to determine their ability to recognize all ten signals while rejecting noise from atmospheric sources. The experiments, although of a preliminary nature, show that all the test signals can be recognized with a two-channel filter and that the nearest noise peak (from six samples) is 6–8 db less than the minimum correlation peak from any of the ten signals.

Technique for Measuring Modulation Transfer Functions of Recording Media*†

A technique is described for measuring the modulation transfer functions (MTF) of recording media. In this technique, a coherent optical system interferometrically generates a signal suitable for recording on the medium being tested. A second coherent optical system is used to obtain the MTF; spatial filters are used to remove the effects of film-grain noise, phase errors in the emulsion of the film, and extraneous light distributions. Since both systems are coherent, this technique can be used equally well to measure the MTF of phase-modulated media or bleached photographic film. A satisfying feature of this technique is that the MTF is displayed at the output of the second optical system as an easily detectable light distribution.

Tunnel-Site Selection by Remote Sensing Techniques

Abstract : A study of the role of remote sensing for geologic reconnaissance for tunnel-site selection was commenced. For this study, remote sensing was defined as ultraviolet to thermal infrared multispectral scanning, X- and L-band synthetic aperture radar, and aerial photography. Data from these sensors were processed and evaluated in terms of their complementary use. This report can be used tutorially on the data processing and basic instrumentation of conventional remote sensing. Future research directions are suggested, and the extension of remote sensing to include airborne passive microwave sensor systems, magnetometry, gamma-ray sensors, gravimetry, and airborne electromagnetic sounding systems is discussed.

<title>A Proposed Method For The Analysis Of Dermatoglyphic Patterns</title>

Dermatoglyphic patterns refer to the configurations formed by dermal ridges on the fingers, palms, toes, and soles. There is a recognized relationship between the dermato-glyphic patterns and certain developmental defects in individuals. Previous methods of dermal pattern analysis are rather subjective and tedious to perform. This paper proposes a hybrid optical-digital system for the quantitative analysis of the dermal patterns. The proposed system extracts dermatoglyphic features through the medium of an optical Fourier transform and a solid-state photodiode array. Preliminary classification results for a group of 11 individuals exhibiting Trisomy-21 (Down's Syndrome) and 10 individuals selected from a normal control group are given.

<title>Holographic Display Of SAR Imagery</title>

Operational interpretation of SAR imagery is degraded by display/processing limitations. For example, the inability to maintain optimum focus over an entire image often results in severe impulse response degradation. Conventional hardcopy film recording can handle only a portion of the available SAR dynamic range; the benefits of a wide dynamic range are lost. Holographic viewers offer a means of overcoming these problems as well as offering potential benefits in other areas, such as sidelobe weighting and artifact removal. Most important, these operations can be performed interactively by the interpreter according to his requirements. The benefits of holographic viewers are unique, not being shared by other display devices -- film and CRT displays. The capabilities of current holographic viewers are discussed. Comparisons in terms of cost and utility are made with other display media. Recommendations for further development are presented.
