Size Distributions of Species in Fine Particles in Denver Using a Microorifice Impactor

Size-fractionated fine particles in Denver, Colorado, were collected by a microorifice impactor and analyzed for mass and elemental composition by a β-gauge and an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. A least-squares procedure was used to fit a lognormal distribution function to the data in order to determine values and uncertainties for the mass median aerodynamic diameter and geometric standard deviation. The validity of the uncertainties so determined was tested by comparing them to uncertainties derived from Monte Carlo simulations.

The JWST Early Release Observations

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Early Release Observations (EROs) is a set of public outreach products created to mark the end of commissioning and the beginning of science operations for JWST. Colloquially known as the "Webb First Images and Spectra", these products were intended to demonstrate to the worldwide public that JWST is ready for science, and is capable of producing spectacular results. The package was released on July 12, 2022, and included images and spectra of the galaxy cluster SMACS~J0723.3-7327 and distant lensed galaxies, the interacting galaxy group Stephan's Quintet, NGC 3324 in the Carina star-forming complex, the Southern Ring planetary nebula NGC 3132, and the transiting hot Jupiter WASP 96b. This paper describes the ERO technical design, observations, and scientific processing of data underlying the colorful outreach products.

NASA's Laboratory Astrophysics Workshop: Opening Remarks

The Astronomy and Physics Division at NASA Headquarters has an active and vibrant program in Laboratory Astrophysics. The objective of the program is to provide the spectroscopic data required by observers to analyze data from NASA space astronomy missions. The program also supports theoretical investigations to provide those spectroscopic parameters that cannot be obtained in the laboratory; simulate space environment to understand formation of certain molecules, dust grains and ices; and production of critically compiled databases of spectroscopic parameters. NASA annually solicits proposals, and utilizes the peer review process to select meritorious investigations for funding. As the mission of NASA evolves, new missions are launched, and old ones are terminated, the Laboratory Astrophysics program needs to evolve accordingly. Consequently, it is advantageous for NASA and the astronomical community to periodically conduct a dialog to assess the status of the program. This Workshop provides a forum for producers and users of laboratory data to get together and understand each others needs and limitations. A multi-wavelength approach enables a cross fertilization of ideas across wavelength bands.

The James Webb Space Telescope Mission

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite detailed reports on the design and the measured performance on orbit.

<title>In-flight performance of the Faint Object Camera of the Hubble Space Telescope: II</title>

This paper gives an update on the performance of the Faint Object Camera--launched with the Hubble Space Telescope--since the last report two years ago. The primary camera, the f/96 relay, continues to work well, but the f/48 relay has recently developed serious problems. The stability of the f/96 relay has been very good with the only change being a small apparent decrease in UV sensitivity. Preliminary results for the f/48 DQE are presented. In-orbit UV flat fields have been obtained and the f/96 objective prisms and polarizers have been calibrated.

Stochastic regions appear as the central mass is increased. These are associated with the appearance and outward movement of an inner Linblad resonance related to an increase of central mass. The fundamental family of orbits sustaining the bar will dissolve at approximately the point where this resonance reaches the end of the bar. More elongated bars dissolve more easily and orbits closer to the center become stochastic more readily.
