Cross phase modulation model based on Volterra series transfer function in hybrid coherent QPSK/OOK systems

In this paper, we present a general cross-phase modulation (XPM) model based on the Volterra series transfer function (VSTF) method in hybrid coherent QPSK/OOK wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) systems. The general model can entirely describe XPM effects in dispersion management (DM) fiber links. Normalized square deviation (NSD) is employed to test the precision of our model. The results show that we can achieve NSD less than 10−3 as launched peak power below 4 dBm/ch in DM fiber links. The accuracy of our model is sufficient for current hybrid coherent QPSK/OOK WDM systems. Based on our XPM model, the statistical properties of XPM effects can be predicted at the end of DM fiber links, the launched optical power can be optimized to achieve the optimum system performance, and the analytical expression of bit error rate (BER) can be obtained to predict the performance of QPSK channel coherent receiver. We present comprehensive analysis regarding the applications of our model through both theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. The good consistence between MC simulation and analytical result validates our theoretical derivation. Our results will be very useful for the design of hybrid coherent QPSK/OOK WDM systems without resorting to time-consuming numerical simulation.

Interaction-induced topological pumping in a solid-state quantum system

As the basis for generating multi-particle quantum correlations, inter-particle interaction plays a crucial role in collective quantum phenomena, quantum phase transitions, and quantum information processing. It can profoundly alter the band structure of quantum many-body systems and give rise to exotic topological phenomena. Conventional topological pumping, which has been well demonstrated in driven linear or noninteracting systems, may break down in the presence of strong interaction. However, the interplay between band topology and interaction could also induce emergent topological pumping of interacting particles, but its experimental realization has proven challenging. Here we demonstrate interaction-induced topological pumping in a solid-state quantum system comprising an array of 36 superconducting qubits. With strong interaction inherent in the qubits and site-resolved controllability of the lattice potential and hopping strength, we realize the topological Thouless pumping of single and two bounded particles. Beyond these topological phenomena with linear or noninteracting counterparts, we also observe topologically resonant tunneling and asymmetric edge-state transport of interacting particles. Our work creates a paradigm for multi-particle topological effects, and provides a new pathway to the study of exotic topological phenomena, many-body quantum transport, and quantum information transfer.

In Situ Fabrication of Al@C Nanocomposite Energetic Additives via Pulsed Discharge in Cyclohexane

ABSTRACT A method for in situ fabrication of Al@C nanocomposite energetic additives through pulsed discharge in liquid cyclohexane has been proposed. The obtained Al@C nanocomposites consist of large aluminum nanoparticles (over 100 nm) enveloped by fullerenes and a carbon matrix with smaller aluminum particles (under 100 nm) embedded within. DSC–TGA curves indicate that the heat release of Al@C is higher than that of micron‐sized and nano‐sized aluminum particles. Al@C nanocomposites effectively reduce the ignition delay for liquid fuels. The energy efficiency of this method is much higher than that of continuous arc ablation, with a yield of up to 2.5 mg/min. This method allows for the simple, convenient, and safe fabrication of energetic additives, presenting a promising prospect for large‐scale industrial production.

Real-time Monitoring Method of Insulation Status of Photoelectric Composite Submarine Cable based on Thermoelectric Coupling

The existing approach for monitoring the insulation state of photoelectric composite submarine cables primarily relies on detecting the current of the cable protection layer. However, this conventional method suffers from limited monitoring accuracy due to the absence of parameter identification processing for the cable. As a result, there is a need to improve the monitoring methodology by incorporating robust parameter identification techniques to enhance the accuracy of insulation state evaluation. In this regard, a real-time monitoring method based on thermoelectric coupling is proposed to monitor the insulation status of the photoelectric composite submarine cable. By constructing an equivalent composite circuit model and a thermodynamic function, a thermoelectric coupling model is constructed and used to identify the parameters of the submarine cable; by extracting the frequency extremes in the spectral values of the submarine cable current signal, an equivalent insulation characteristic function is constructed to realize the determination of the insulation state. The proposed method is verified for the insulation state monitoring effect in the experiment. The experimental results show that when the proposed method is used to monitor the insulation state of the photoelectric composite submarine cable, the calculated partial discharge quantity has a small error, and the monitoring accuracy is high.

Synthetic multi-dimensional Aharonov-Bohm cages in Fock state lattices

Fock-state lattices (FSLs), composed of photon number states with infinite Hilbert space, have emerged as a promising platform for simulating high-dimensional physics due to their potential to extend into arbitrarily high dimensions. Here, we demonstrate the construction of multi-dimensional FSLs using superconducting quantum circuits. By controlling artificial gauge fields within their internal structures, we investigate flux-induced extreme localization dynamics, such as Aharonov-Bohm caging, extending from 2D to 3D. We also explore the coherent interference of quantum superposition states, achieving extreme localization within specific subspaces assisted by quantum entanglement. Our findings pave the way for manipulating the behavior of a broad class of quantum states in higher-dimensional systems.

Distributed multi-parameter quantum metrology with a superconducting quantum network

Quantum metrology has emerged as a powerful tool for timekeeping, field sensing, and precision measurements within fundamental physics. With the advent of distributed quantum metrology, its capabilities have been extended to probing spatially distributed parameters across networked quantum systems. However, generating the necessary non-local entanglement remains a significant challenge, and the inherent incompatibility in multi-parameter quantum estimation affects ultimate performance. Here we use a superconducting quantum network with low-loss interconnects to estimate multiple distributed parameters associated with non-commuting generators. By employing high-fidelity non-local entanglement across network nodes and a sequential control strategy, we accurately estimate remote vector fields and their gradients. Our approach achieves an improvement of up to 6.86 dB over classical strategy for estimating all three components of a remote vector field in terms of standard deviation. Moreover, for the estimation of gradients along two distinct directions across distributed vector fields, our distributed strategy, which utilizes non-local entanglement, outperforms local entanglement strategies, leading to a 3.44 dB reduction in the sum of variances.

Dephasing-assisted diffusive dynamics in superconducting quantum circuits

Random fluctuations caused by environmental noise can lead to decoherence in quantum systems. Exploring and controlling such dissipative processes is both fundamentally intriguing and essential for harnessing quantum systems to achieve practical advantages and deeper insights. In this Letter, we first demonstrate the diffusive dynamics assisted by controlled dephasing noise in superconducting quantum circuits, contrasting with coherent evolution. We show that dephasing can enhance localization in a superconducting qubit array with quasiperiodic order, even in the regime where all eigenstates remain spatially extended for the coherent counterpart. Furthermore, by preparing different excitation distributions in the qubit array, we observe that a more localized initial state relaxes to a uniformly distributed mixed state faster with dephasing noise, illustrating another counterintuitive phenomenon called Mpemba effect, i.e., a far-from-equilibrium state can relax toward the equilibrium faster. These results deepen our understanding of diffusive dynamics at the microscopic level, and demonstrate controlled dissipative processes as a valuable tool for investigating Markovian open quantum systems.

A Method for Online Monitoring Data Release of Composite Submarine Cable Based on Horizontal Federated Learning

Conventional online composite submarine cable monitoring data release mostly adopts the method and principle of blockchain dynamic zoning consensus. In the data release process, there are omissions, and it takes a long time to complete the task, which reduces the timeliness of online composite submarine cable monitoring data release. Based on this, a new data publishing method is proposed by introducing horizontal federation learning. First, the online monitoring data of composite submarine cables are collected and preprocessed to eliminate the high-frequency capacitive effect of submarine cables. Secondly, manage composite submarine cable data nodes, transform the status relationship of data nodes, and ensure the quality of subsequent data release. A horizontal federation learning model is established to design the online monitoring data release process. The experimental results show that the new data release method is highly feasible. With the increasing online monitoring data of composite submarine cables, the time required for data release is short, and the timeliness is high.

Scalable algorithm simplification using quantum AND logic

Abstract Implementing quantum algorithms on realistic devices requires translating high-level global operations into sequences of hardware-native logic gates, a process known as quantum compiling. Physical limitations, such as constraints in connectivity and gate alphabets, often result in unacceptable implementation costs. To enable successful near-term applications, it is crucial to optimize compilation by exploiting the capabilities of existing hardware. Here we implement a resource-efficient construction for a quantum version of AND logic that can reduce the compilation overhead, enabling the execution of key quantum circuits. On a high-scalability superconducting quantum processor, we demonstrate low-depth synthesis of high-fidelity generalized Toffoli gates with up to 8 qubits and Grover’s search algorithm in a search space of up to 64 entries. Our experimental demonstration illustrates a scalable and widely applicable approach to implementing quantum algorithms, bringing more meaningful quantum applications on noisy devices within reach.
