Performance and Reaction Mechanism of a Novel Coking Binder Obtained from Low-Grade Coal

Under the premise of ensuring the quality of coke, reducing coking/fat coal utilization is an urgent problem in the coking industry. This study prepared an extract with softening and bonding characteristics from noncaking low-grade coal by a degradative solvent extraction method. The substitution effect of coking/fat coal by the extract for coking was studied, and the effect mechanism was analyzed in detail. The results show that the caking index of the extract reached 100 and the vitrinite content reached 80%. When the extract substitution ratio is 10%, the coke quality is basically unchanged. Especially when the substitution ratio is 5%, all of the properties of coke are improved, the particle coke reactivity index (PRI) decreases by 4%, the particle coke strength after reaction (PSR) increases by 5%, and the coke microstrength index (MSI) increases by 12%. The influence mechanism model of extract addition on the strength and structure of coke was proposed. The lower softening point of the extract can broaden the plastic interval and improve the caking properties and fluidity of the blended coal, reduce the porosity of coke, and improve the order degree of the carbonaceous structure. Moreover, the highly reactive extract undergoes cross-linking reactions with coal during coking; thus, the cross-link bonds further improve the strength of the coke.

Biomass Waste‐Derived Electrocatalyst Constructed with g‐C₃N₄ as a Multifunctional Template for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract Exploring an effective way to convert biomass waste into highly active oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts will not only benefit alleviating environmental management pressure, but also open up new ways for the development of alternatives to Pt‐based catalysts. Although the traditional pyrolysis conversion method has been proved to be stable and feasible, the low electrocatalytic activity of the product and the cumbersome post‐treatment process make it difficult to be popularized. Here, we report an effective method to overcome the mentioned drawbacks: the introduction of g‐C 3 N 4 . The experimental results confirm that g‐C 3 N 4 can be used as a multifunctional template for adjusting the morphology and providing N source. More importantly, it will decompose at 700 °C and avoid post‐treatment of residues. The pyrolysis products assisted by g‐C 3 N 4 exhibit similar ORR performances to commercial Pt/C, including onset potential of 0.963 V (vs. RHE), half‐wave potential of 0.835 V (vs. RHE) and limiting current density of 6.35 mA ⋅ cm −2 . Impressively, the product displayed outstanding performance on output power density (107 mW ⋅ cm −2 ) and discharge performance at different current densities as the air electrode of zinc‐air battery, which even superior to that of commercial Pt/C. This study elucidated the functional role of g‐C 3 N 4 in reaction system and facilitated the development of more efficient biomass waste‐based ORR electrocatalysts.

Degradative solvent extraction of low-rank coal: Role of water on pyrolysis mechanism of low-rank coal in a highly-dispersed medium

A degradative solvent extraction (DSE) method was proposed to upgrade low-rank coals (LRC) for their cascaded utilizations in a highly-dispersed medium. The derived products exhibited well improved properties in comparison to the raw LRCs. Previously, the LRCs were pre-dried to eliminate the potential impact of the varied water content of raw LRCs, but in light of the abundant water in fresh coals, the hydrolyzing effect of water on coals under heating, and the energy cost to pre-dry the LRCs, it is consequently essential to clarify the effect of water so as to verify the necessity of pre-drying process. In this study, the roles of inherent water and extra-added water were respectively investigated, using dried, raw and wet coals from two typical LRCs. The results show that increasing the moisture content of raw LRCs contributed to the extraction ability of DSE method without noticeably changing the elemental composition, chemical structure and thermal decomposition behavior of extractable products, thus pre-drying of LRCs before DSE treatment was proven unnecessary. Additionally, the roles of the inherent water were concluded as: 1) leading to the formation of stable covalent bond during drying process; and 2) acting as H donor to promote extraction ability, while the added water can only function as H donor. Since excessive water will increase the pressure during DSE treatment and lead to the waste water treatment, the LRCs with a water content between 10% and 30% were consequently recommended for the practical application of DSE treatment.
