Estimation of genetic parameters in the golden mahseer Tor putitora (Ham.)

Genetic parameters for body weight and body length were estimated in the golden mahseer Tor putitora (Ham.) using data from 12 families produced in a nested breeding design and reared for 17 weeks. The average performance of the progeny from each family for growth at different time intervals was studied and comparison made with natural population. Significant differences were evident. The performance was superior in natural population. Dam 2 performed significantly better than others and the family from Dam 2 was superior in growth compared to the other families. The average performances of the families ranged from 21.11 ± 0.21 mm to 23.05 ± 0.18 mm for length and 154.55 ± 3.82 mg to 167.33 ± 0.93 mg for weight at 17 weeks. The heritability for length estimated from the sire component of variance ranged from 0.06 ± 0.06 at week 1 and 0.33 ± 0.20 at week 17; and from 0.57 ± 0.42 at week 1 and 0.71 ± 0.51 at week 17 based on dam component of variance. The maternal effects reduced after 9 weeks. The estimates of heritability for length were found to be higher than those for body weight. The genetic correlations between the traits were high indicating a strong relationship. The estimates of phenotypic correlations varied between 0.48 ± 0.06 to 0.25 ± 0.09 from 11 to 17 weeks.

“Somebody Help Me… I’m Stayin’ Alive.” Putting Into Context the Burgeoning of Sudden Cardiac Deaths

The surge in sudden cardiac deaths (SCDs), especially among the young, has become a global concern impacting economies and healthcare systems. In Western societies, SCD accounts for up to 20% of all deaths, while in the United States, it is the primary cause of cardiovascular-related mortality. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and SCD, stemming from cardiac activity disruption, necessitate urgent intervention, with defibrillation playing a crucial role. In the Indian context, challenges arise from the incomplete determination of causes of death. The limited application of the Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD) contributes to this issue. A population-based study in India reveals a substantial SCD rate, estimating approximately 700,000 cases annually. India faces a burgeoning cardiovascular crisis, necessitating proactive strategies to prevent heart diseases and SCDs. Prioritizing preventive measures, public awareness, and emergency response are critical components. By embracing these measures and campaigns, such as FIT INDIA and EAT RIGHT, India can pave the way for a healthier future and reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases and SCDs.

Screening of plant species for inhibition of bacterial population of raw water

Abstract Seven plant species i.e., Adhatoda vasica, Andrographis paniculata, Azadirachta indica, Lawsonia inermis, Moringa oleifera, Ocimum sanctum and Trigonella foenum‐graecum have been screened out systematically for their effectiveness in inhibition of bacterial population of raw water (in vitro) at variable pH level i.e., 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5 and 8.0. Maximum percentage inhibition was observed in three plant species at 6.5 pH level while in four plant species at 7.0 pH level. Among all the studied plants, maximum inhibition was recorded in case of L. inermis (93.97%) which was followed by M. oleifera (89.72%) and A. vasica (81.75%). In order of maximum to minimum inhibition, individual plant species depicted their effectiveness in the following manner : L. inermis > M. oleifera > A. vasica > A. indica > O. sanctum > A. paniculata > T. foenum‐graecum. Besides, MPN coliform and E. coli were also inhibited maximum at 7.0 pH level by the extract of L. inermis which was followed by A. vasica and M. oleifera at 6.5 pH level. Hence, these plant species may be used for elimination of bacterial contaminants of raw drinking water obtained directly from the sources to reduce the occurrence of different water borne diseases.

Organochlorine contamination in the fish of the River Ganges, India

Abstract Concentrations of persistent organochlorine residues were measured in economically important fish of the River Ganges from different locations in Bihar. The contamination pattern of organochlorines in fishes from several locations was Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) >Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) >aldrin>endosulfan. The average wet weight concentrations in the muscles of fishes was; DDTs, 13.6 to 1665.9 ng g-1; HCHs, 115.8 to 1206.8 ng g-1; aldrin, 3.1 to 86.1 ng g-1; and endosulfan 2.9 to 74.5 ng g-1. The study indicates that organochlorine contaminants are still entering the Ganges river system, and suggests that the human population that consumes contaminated fish from the river may be at risk from those contaminants.

Organochlorine residues in rural drinking water sources of northern and north Eastern India

Abstract Organochlorine pesticide residues concentrations in water samples collected from rural areas of northern and north eastern districts of India were studied. In the study, pesticide residues were detected in both the surface and ground water although the concentrations detected were below the WHO prescribed limit. Alpha HCH, total HCH and aldrin were detected in all the samples. The total DDT was detected in 90.9% ground water and 82% surface water samples. The average beta HCH and pp’ DDT concentrations were found to be higher as compared to their other metabolites. Ground water had alpha HCH, beta HCH, gamma HCH, op'DDT, pp”; DDT, pp'DDE pp’ DDD, endosulfan and aldrin higher by 4.6% , 14.06%, 2.4%, 24.2%, 15.6%, 101.02%, 174%, 57.85% and 24.73% as compared to surface water. The correlation between pesticide residues and nitrate concentration was non significant and could be due to their low concentration.
