Approximation-Free Prescribed Performance Control With Prescribed Input Constraints

This letter considers the tracking control problem for an unknown nonlinear system with time-varying bounded disturbance subjected to a prescribed performance and input constraints. When performance and input constraints are specified simultaneously for such a problem, a trade-off is inevitable. Consequently, a feasibility condition for prescribing performance and input constraints is devised to address such difficulties of arbitrary prescription. In addition, an approximation-free controller with low complexity is proposed, which ensures that the constraints are never violated, provided that the feasibility condition holds. Finally, simulation results corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Internet of things (IoT) is an open area of next-generation innovative communication derived from the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The applicability of IoTs breaks the boundary of the digital era, such as education, transportation, hospital, agriculture, and many more. The process of communication of IoTs depends on the physical hardware of the embedded device and non-standard protocols. The exchange of information and data over the non-standard protocol of communication creates a security gap for the authentication and prevention of network and data.

Ring Bose-Einstein condensate in a cavity: Chirality Detection and Rotation Sensing

Recently, a method has been proposed to detect the rotation of a ring Bose-Einstein condensate, in situ, in real-time and with minimal destruction, using a cavity driven with optical fields carrying orbital angular momentum. This method is sensitive to the magnitude of the condensate winding number but not its sign. In the present work, we consider simulations of the rotation of the angular lattice formed by the optical fields and show that the resulting cavity transmission spectra are sensitive to the sign of the condensate winding number. We demonstrate the minimally destructive technique on persistent current rotational eigenstates, counter-rotating superpositions, and a soliton singly or in collision with a second soliton. Conversely, we also investigate the sensitivity of the ring condensate, given knowledge of its winding number, to the rotation of the optical lattice. This characterizes the effectiveness of the optomechanical configuration as a laboratory rotation sensor. Our results are important to studies of rotating ring condensates used in atomtronics, superfluid hydrodynamics, simulation of topological defects and cosmological theories, interferometry using matter-wave solitons, and optomechanical sensing.

Approximation- and Chattering-Free Quasi Sliding Mode Control for Unknown Systems

Motivated by the concept of Quasi-Sliding Mode (QSM) in discrete-time systems, this brief presents a novel approach that relaxes the requirement of ubiquitous exact sliding motion in continuous-time systems, aiming to achieve an approximation-and chattering-free quasi-sliding mode controller (QSMC). The proposed QSMC provides robust and chattering-free control for an unknown nonlinear system without the need for intricate control methods, learning agents, or system identification tools. Furthermore, comprehensive simulation studies have been conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

Risk perception and practice towards road traffic safety among medical students

Background: Road traffic injuries are a major but neglected epidemic. WHO has declared road traffic accidents (RTA) as the number one cause of death among those aged 15-29 years. India has witnessed 31.3% of the road traffic deaths among 15 to 29 years individuals in the year 2011 as reported by national crime records bureau. This study is aimed to learn and study risk perception and practice of road safety measures among medical students.Methods: A Cross-sectional study was conducted among medical students with an objective A 297 M.B.B.S. students were selected by convenient sampling technique. The study period was May-August, 2016. The information collected was analysed using SPSS version 16 & Microsoft excels 2007 software.Results: Majority of boys (82% and 98%) and girls (55% & 66%) had a satisfactory understanding of traffic rules and traffic signs & signals, respectively. While exploring on the helmet use, only 36% of girls were aware of its importance. About the factors responsible for the crash severity, participants showed a lesser concern to the seat-belts & child restraints (59% boys and 39% girls). Notably only 52% of male participants were in view that alcohol consumption sometimes increases the severity while driving.Conclusions: Abidance to road safety was not found satisfactory. Adequate interventions and reorientation training towards road safety need to be introduced among young drivers.

Cryotolerance strategies of Pseudomonads isolated from the rhizosphere of Himalayan plants

The cold stress biology of psychrotrophic Pseudomonas strains isolated from the rhizosphere of Himalayan plants have been explored to evaluate their cryotolerance characteristcs. Pseudomonas strains were examined for stress metabolites, viz., exopolysaccharide (EPS) production, intracellular sugar, polyols and amino acid content, ice nucleation activity, and their freezing survival at -10 and -40°C, respectively. High freezing survival was observed for the Pseudomonas strains that were grown at 4°C prior to their freezing at -10 or -40°C. Increased EPS production was noticed when Pseudomonas strains were grown at lower temperatures, i.e., 4 and 15°C, in comparison with their optimal growth temperature of 28°C. All Pseudomonas strains showed low level of type-III class ice nucleation activity at -10°C after 96 h. Considerable differences were noticed in accumulated contents of various intracellular sugars, polyols, amino acids for all Pseudomonas strains when they grown at two different temperatures, i.e., 4 and 28°C, respectively. The unusual complement of stress protectants especially, raffinose, cysteine and aspartic acid that accumulated in the bacterial cells at low temperature was novel and intriguing finding of this study. The finding that raffinose is a key metabolite accumulated at low temperature is an exciting discovery, and to the best of our information this is first report ever signifying its role in bacterial cold tolerance.

Dynamic instability of microtubules: Effect of catastrophe-suppressing drugs

Microtubules are stiff filamentary proteins that constitute an important component of the cytoskeleton of cells. These are known to exhibit a dynamic instability. A steadily growing microtubule can suddenly start depolymerizing very rapidly; this phenomenon is known as a ``catastrophe.'' However, often a shrinking microtubule is ``rescued'' and starts polymerizing again. Here we develop a model for the polymerization-depolymerization dynamics of microtubules in the presence of catastrophe-suppressing drugs. Solving the dynamical equations in the steady state, we derive exact analytical expressions for the length distributions of the microtubules tipped with drug-bound tubulin subunits as well as those of the microtubules, in the growing and shrinking phases, tipped with drug-free pure tubulin subunits. We also examine the stability of the steady-state solutions.
