Room Temperature Broadband Infrared Carbon Nanotube Photodetector with High Detectivity and Stability

Highly purified carbon nanotube cascading IR detectors are constructed, in which virtual contacts are used to multiply photovoltage and improve the signal-to-noise ratio. It exhibits a broadband response, high room temperature detectivity of 2.91 × 1011 Jones, extremely good temperature and temporal stability and large scale fabrication potential of 150 × 150 photodetector array with random test yield of 100%. Ordered and Atomically Perfect Fragmentation of Layered Transition Metal Dichalcogenides via Mechanical Instabilities

Thermoplastic polymers subjected to a continuous tensile stress experience a state of mechanical instabilities, resulting in neck formation and propagation. The necking process with strong localized strain enables the transformation of initially brittle polymeric materials into robust, flexible, and oriented forms. Here we harness the polymer-based mechanical instabilities to control the fragmentation of atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). We develop a simple and versatile nanofabrication tool to precisely fragment atom-thin TMDs sandwiched between thermoplastic polymers into ordered and atomically perfect TMD nanoribbons in arbitrary directions regardless of the crystal structures, defect content, and original geometries. This method works for a very broad spectrum of semiconducting TMDs with thicknesses ranging from monolayers to bulk crystals. We also explore the electrical properties of the fabricated monolayer nanoribbon arrays, obtaining an on/off ratio of ∼106 for such MoS2 arrays based field-effect transistors. Furthermore, we demonstrate an improved hydrogen evolution reaction with the resulting monolayer MoS2 nanoribbons, thanks to the largely increased catalytic edge sites formed by this physical fragmentation method. This capability not only enriches the fundamental study of TMD extreme and fragmentation mechanics, but also impacts on future developments of TMD-based devices.

Bandwidth enhancement of dual‐layer patch antenna using low mutual‐coupling near‐field resonant parasiticl elements

ABSTRACT A pair of face‐to‐face semicircular split‐ring resonators (SSRRs) was utilized to improve the impedance bandwidth of a planar patch antenna. By loading the SSRRs on the superstrate layer, their fundamental resonant modes could be capacitively induced by the radiation patch of the antenna underneath them, respectively. Benefitting from the ultra‐low mutual coupling level between the SSRRs even though their resonant modes are very close to each other, their resonant frequency ranges could be merged with the resonant frequency range from the fundamental mode of the radiation patch to produce a wide fractional impedance bandwidth as high as 4.2% (witnessing 5.16 times enhancement compared with that of a standard patch antenna), even with such a low profile (only 0.052λ 0 height). Moreover, the experimental results, which are in good agreement with the simulation values, demonstrated its stable and excellent radiation characteristics, including strict broadside main beams with high polarization purity and large front‐to‐back ratios over the entire operational bandwidth. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A design of integrated ultra-wideband/narrow band rectangular dielectric resonator antenna

An ultra-wideband (UWB) rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) integrated with a narrow-band (NB) DRA is presented. The proposed antenna consists of a UWB rectangular DRA excited by a bevel-shaped patch and a NB DRA excited by a strip. The simulated results demonstrate that the UWB antenna provides a 2:1 voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) bandwidth for 2.5-12 GHz, integrated with a NB antenna. Moreover, the two ports have the same polarization, and two symmetrical short circuited strips are used to improve the isolation between the two ports. This can be a suitable candidate for applications in cognitive radio, where the UWB antenna can be used for spectrum sensing and the NB antenna for communication operation.

Parameter Estimation of Ultra Wideband (UWB) Electromagnetic Pulses Reflected from a Lossy Half Space

In this article, the definitions of waveform parameters are extended, so that they are applicable not only to a double exponential ultra-wide-band (UWB) incident pulse but also to the reflected pulse for both horizontal and vertical po- larizations. With numerical inversion of Laplace transform, the waveform pa- rameters of UWB electromagnetic pulses reflected from lossy interfaces are esti- mated for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. Based on the estimation, the relationships between the waveform parameters of reflected pulses and incident angles as well as material parameters of interfaces are discussed.

A reconfigurable multiband CPW-fed antenna based on a quad-mode slot-line resonator

This paper presents the design and realisation of a compact reconfigurable quad-/dual-band microwave antenna, which has been implemented based on a novel quad-mode slotline resonator (SLR). The coplanar waveguide (CPW) feeding structure has also been designed in detail in order to be able to optionally function under both the weakly-or strongly-coupling conditions. Under the weakly-coupling condition, the antenna has four narrow operating bands relating to the four resonant modes, while under the strongly-coupling condition, another resonance arises. As a result, a dual-band antenna is produced with a very wide second band. The fabricated antenna has then been thoroughly measured under both the intended conditions, which show good agreement with the conducted simulations.

Growth and Performance of Yttrium Oxide as an Ideal High-κ Gate Dielectric for Carbon-Based Electronics

High-quality yttrium oxide (Y(2)O(3)) is investigated as an ideal high-kappa gate dielectric for carbon-based electronics through a simple and cheap process. Utilizing the excellent wetting behavior of yttrium on sp(2) carbon framework, ultrathin (about few nm) and uniform Y(2)O(3) layers have been directly grown on the surfaces of carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphene without using noncovalent functionalization layers or introducing large structural distortion and damage. A top-gate CNT field-effect transistor (FET) adopting 5 nm Y(2)O(3) layer as its top-gate dielectric shows excellent device characteristics, including an ideal subthreshold swing of 60 mV/decade (up to the theoretical limit of an ideal FET at room temperature). The high electrical quality Y(2)O(3) dielectric layer has also been integrated into a graphene FET as its top-gate dielectric with a capacitance of up to 1200 nF/cm(2), showing an improvement on the gate efficiency and on state transconductance of over 100 times when compared with that of its back-gate counterpart.

An electroactive metal–organic framework-based novel on–off ratiometric electrochemical platform for effective detection of lead ions

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials exhibit unique advantages in adsorption, pre-enrichment and selective recognition of heavy metal ions due to their porous nature, tunable structure and ease of functionalization. However, due to the poor conductivity and electrochemical activity of most MOFs, their application in electrochemical sensing is limited. In this paper, an electroactive hybrid material rGO/UiO-bpy composed of UiO-bpy and electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was prepared and has been successfully used in the electrochemical determination of lead ions (Pb2+). Interestingly, a reverse response relationship between the electrochemical signal of UiO-bpy and the concentration of Pb2+ was discovered in the experiment, which can be used to develop a novel on-off ratiometric sensing strategy for Pb2+ detection. To our knowledge, this is the first time that UiO-bpy has been used as both an improved electrode material for heavy metal ion detection and an internal reference probe for ratiometric analysis. This study is of great significance to expand the electrochemical application of UiO-bpy and develop innovative electrochemical ratiometric sensing strategies for Pb2+ determination.

Temperature Dependent Resistance of As-Grown and Chemical Treated Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes Films

Single Walled Carbon Nanotube (SWCNT) films were directly synthesized via Floating Catalyst Chemical Vapor Deposition (FCCVD) method. Temperature dependent resistance measurements were carried out on the as-grown and chemical treated SWCNTs films. A "U" shaped curve was obtained for each sample, with a significant variation in the crossover temperatures between the as-grown and treated samples. A heterogeneous model was adopted to interpret the experimental data, revealing the coexistence of anisotropic 1D metallic conduction, conventional metallic conduction and fluctuation assisted tunneling. Our results implied very low barriers, verifying the good intertube and interbundle contacts in the directly synthesized SWCNTs films. We speculated that oxidization and acid treatments would affect the overall configuration of the films, leading to the changes in the temperature dependence of resistance. In addition, Raman and absorption spectra indicated that oxidization and acid process would cause moderate changes in the hole carrier concentration of the films.
