Effect of Ultrasound on Surfactant-Aided Soil Washing

The use of ultrasound as an enhancement mechanism in the surfactant-aided soil-washing process was examined by conducting desoption tests of soils contaminated with naphthalene or diesel-oil. The experiments were conducted to elucidate the effect of ultrasound on the mass transfer from soil to the aqueous phase using naphthalene-contaminated soil. In addition, the use of ultrasound for the diesel-oil-contaminated soil was investigated under a range of conditions of surfactant concentration, sonication power, duration, soil/liquid ratio, particle size and initial diesel-oil concentration. The ultrasound used in the soil-washing process significantly enhanced the mass transfer rate from the solid phase to the aqueous phase. The removal efficiency of diesel-oil from the soil phase generally increased with longer sonication time, higher power intensity, and large particle size.

Sonochemical Degradation of Reactive Black 5 with a Composite Catalyst of TiO₂/Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

In the sonocatalytic process, composites of TiO 2 -carbon were used because carbon provides more adsorption sites and acts like an electron sink to prevent the recombination of an electron/hole. Therefore, in the present study, the characteristics of a TiO 2 /single-walled carbon nanotubes catalyst (TiO 2 /SWCNTs) have been investigated, and the optimal weight ratio of SWCNTs and the dose for degradation of reactive black 5 (RB5) were also evaluated. TiO 2 /SWCNT composite was characterized using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction microanalysis and spectra, and X-ray diffraction patterns. The degradation rate constants of RB5 with the ratio of SWCNTs were found to depend on the adsorption phenomenon of a surface catalyst, light absorbance, and the recombination of electrons and holes. As a result, the optimal ratio of carbon in the sono-TiO 2 /SWCNTs process for degradation of RB5 was TiO 2 :SWCNTs= 200:1. Additionally, the optimal dose of the catalyst was 0.5 g/L.

Surfactant Selection for the Enhanced Biological Degradation of Toluene

Surfactants can be used to enhance the mass transfer rate of hydrophobic compounds into the biologically active liquid phase, resulting in an increase in biodegradation rate of toluene. In this study, the mass transfer rate and the biocompatibility of toluene in the presence of various surfactants were evaluated. Four anionic and non ionic surfactants were tested: sodium dodecyl sulfate (SOS), TritonX-100, Tween 80, and BYK-345 (silicone surfactant). Experimental results showed that BYK-345 at the critical micelle concentration (CMC) enhanced the solubility of toluene. However, there was no increase in the solubility of toluene by SOS and TritonX-100 at their CMCs. With the addition of each surfactant into deionized water the mass transfer rate became faster than that of the case with no surfactant. A bottle study using toluene-degrading microorganisms showed that SOS seriously reduced toluene removal presumably due to the toxicity of the anionic surfactant and/or the substrate competition between the surfactant and toluene. In addition, the degradation rate of toluene was decreased in the presence of BYK-345, indicating that BYK-345 adversely affects the activity of microorganisms. However, TritonX-100 and Tween 80 did not decrease the degradation rate of toluene significantly. Rather, at the low concentration of TritonX-100 toluene degradation rate was even increased. Overall the experimental results suggest that TritonX-100 be the appropriate surfactant for enhanced biological degradation of toluene.

Addition of Sonochemical Reactor to the Solar Photocatalytic Compound Parabolic Concentrators System

Chloroform was treated with ultrasound at 35 and 283 kHz in a compound parabolic concentrators (CPCs) system to assess the applicability of ultrasound as a supporting process of solar-photocatalysis and verify the enhancement of ultrasound combined solar-photocatalysis. Chloroform was degraded by 22.5% in the Solar/TiO 2 process over a 200 min period. At an ultrasound frequency of 283 kHz, chloroform was degraded by 52.6% (Sono), 47.0% (Sono/TiO 2 ) and 64.4% (Sono/Solar/TiO 2 ). On the other hand, at 35 kHz, chloroform was degraded by 49.0% (Sono), 46.1% (Sono/TiO 2 ) and 80.0% (Sono/Solar/TiO 2 ). Ultrasound at 35 kHz was more effective for degrading chloroform in the Sono/Solar/TiO 2 process than 283 kHz. The rate of hydrogen peroxide formation, particle size and specific surface area of TiO 2 were measured to determine why 35 kHz is more effective than 283 kHz.

The Effect of Irradiation Distance/Volume on Sonochemical Oxidation of Arsenite

The objective of this study was to find the frequency that most effectively generates hydroxyl radical and to investigate the effect of solution volume on the oxidation of arsenite (As[III]) under the determined frequency.Based on the cavitation yield for hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical is formed most effectively under the frequency of 300 kHz.The experiment was performed with various solution volumes (334, 690, 1,046, and 1,401 mL) under 300 kHz.Results showed that as solution volume increased, kinetic constant for arsenite oxidation decreased.However, cavitation yield for arsenite decreased in small volumes (334, and 690 mL) but maintained or increased in large volumes (1,046, and 1,401 mL) over a set period of time (10, 30, and 60 min).Based on the kinetic constant result, it is more advantageous to oxidize arsenite in small volumes.However, according to the cavitation yield for arsenite, it is applicable to oxidize arsenite in large volumes over a long period of time.
