Charting the Outer Helmholtz Plane and the Role of Nitrogen Doping in the Oxygen Reduction Reaction Conducted in Alkaline Media Using Nonprecious Metal Catalysts

This study was focused on elucidating the origin of the catalytic activity displayed by non-precious-metal-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts before and after heat treatment. Electrochemical measurements were recorded using a series of metal phthalocyanines calculated to exhibit varying oxygen adsorption energies before and after heat treatment at a temperature sufficiently high to facilitate degradation. Collectively, the results indicate that while the oxygen adsorption is germane to the catalytic activity before heat treatment, the ORR appears to proceed through a different pathway that is not dependent on adsorption energy after heat treatment. These conclusions help to explain the high catalytic activities exhibited by carbon- or nitrogen-based materials containing metal ions after heat treatment and may lead to the realization of substitutes for ORR catalysts that utilize precious transition metals.

Three-Dimensional Unified Electrode Design Using a NiFeOOH Catalyst for Superior Performance and Durable Anion-Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers

The design of high-performance and durable electrodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWE). Herein, a three-dimensional unified electrode in which nickel–iron oxyhydroxide (NiFeOOH) is directly electrodeposited on a gas diffusion layer (GDL) is developed as an AEMWE anode. Unlike conventional electrodes with a separate catalyst layer and GDL, the unified electrode comprises a single component integrating the catalyst layer with the GDL. The resulting unified electrode shows higher catalytic activity than a conventional electrode based on commercial NiFe and IrO2 and stable activity over 500 h. Investigation of the electrode parameters revealed an outstanding AEMWE performance of 3600 mA cm–2 at 1.9 V, which is the highest among many AEMWE studies. The unified AEMWE also showed durable performance at an ultrahigh current density. Therefore, unified electrode design can be considered an alternative to conventional electrodes to reduce the hydrogen production cost.

Novel transparent high-entropy sesquioxide ceramics with high physicochemical plasma etching resistance

High-entropy ceramics exhibit novel intrinsic properties. Hence, they have been explored for a wide range of applications ranging from thermal insulation and energy storage to advanced optical components. Recently, the semiconductor industry has faced a demand for higher-performance chips, necessitating higher aspect ratios in wafer fabrication and further miniaturization of linewidths. Therefore, there is a need to develop novel materials exhibiting high plasma etching resistance and minimized contaminant generation. The plasma-etching resistance displayed by high-entropy ceramics can an innovative solution to this emerging challenge. In this study, we successfully fabricated single-phase high-entropy sesquioxide ceramics with high optical transparency, dense microstructure, and minimal residual pores. A structural analysis of the fabricated samples revealed a single-phase structure with excellent phase homogeneity. An evaluation of the plasma-etching resistance of high-entropy ceramics for the first time revealed a low etching rate of 8 nm/h compared to conventional plasma-resistant materials. These comprehensive characterizations of high-entropy ceramics indicate that they are promising candidates for significantly improving the production yield of semiconductors and for a wide range of potential applications, such as next-generation active optical ceramics.

Nonprecious Metal Bifunctional Catalysts for Oxygen Electrocatalysis Using a Metal‐Organic Framework

Green energy devices such as Zn‐air batteries require a highly active bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst. In this study, heat‐treated (HT) FeNi‐alloy nanoparticles embedded on a porous carbon matrix (FeNi‐MOF‐HTs) are prepared by annealing Fe‐ and Ni‐based metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs). FeNi‐MOF‐HTs exhibit an improved oxygen catalytic performance when compared with that of the catalysts derived from Fe‐only MOFs. The enhanced activities of the FeNi‐MOF‐HTs are attributed to their nanoscale size and an electronic interaction between Fe and Ni in the FeNi alloy. An optimized annealing temperature of 800°C provides porosity and promotes graphitization of the carbon matrix in FeNi‐MOF‐HTs. This work describes an effective strategy for the design of highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Biomass-Derived Air Cathode Materials: Pore-Controlled S,N-Co-doped Carbon for Fuel Cells and Metal–Air Batteries

An earth-abundant and feasible air cathode electrocatalyst is of importance for energy devices including fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Herein, hierarchically porous S,N-co-doped carbon materials derived from bamboo are prepared via pyrolysis of bamboo and thiourea to function as oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysts. Due to their controlled mesopore ratio and increased effective dopant amount, the S,N-co-doped bamboo carbons (SNBCs) present half-wave potentials and stabilities comparable to those of commercial Pt/C catalysts. As cathode materials for anion exchange membrane fuel cells and Zn–air batteries, SNBCs exhibit high performances, attributed to their intrinsic activities as well as well-developed secondary pore structure in the catalyst layer. Thus, we demonstrate the viability of biomass-derived catalysts for practical energy applications.
