A micro-integrated laser module has been developed for the deployment in a compact, transportable 171 Yb + optical clock. With this laser module, the clock laser system demonstrated a Modified Allan Deviation of less than 1.5×10 -15 for 1 s ≤ 100 s when compared against a superior reference laser. © 2020 The Author(s)

The Ferdinand-Braun-Institute has been developing high-power, narrow-linewidth semiconductor lasers for precision spectroscopy applications in harsh environments for more than ten years.Starting with hybrid-integrated diode laser chips and micro-optics on a ceramic platform for Bose-Einstein condensation experiments in a drop tower, the institute is now developing, qualifying and, in many cases, already delivering fully-packaged, multi-functional modules for application on platforms including sounding rockets, the International Space Station (ISS) and nano-satellites.We present the latest generation of electro-optical modules, which is designed to accommodate any two semiconductor chips.This includes, amongst others, the ECDL-MOPA, where the laser architecture consists of an ECDL and a semiconductor optical amplifier, both hybrid-integrated into a sealed package within a footprint of a conventional smartphone (but with a height of approx.23 mm).The single-mode, polarization-maintaining optical fiber output delivers, for instance, 570 mW of power and a free-running FWHM linewidth of approximately 30 kHz (within a timescale of 1 ms) at the operating wavelength of 1064.49nm.One such module has already been successfully launched on a sounding rocket mission in May 2018.

Optical clock technologies for global navigation satellite systems

Abstract Future generations of global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) can benefit from optical technologies. Especially optical clocks could back-up or replace the currently used microwave clocks, having the potential to improve GNSS position determination enabled by their lower frequency instabilities. Furthermore, optical clock technologies—in combination with optical inter-satellite links—enable new GNSS architectures, e.g., by synchronization of distant optical frequency references within the constellation using time and frequency transfer techniques. Optical frequency references based on Doppler-free spectroscopy of molecular iodine are seen as a promising candidate for a future GNSS optical clock. Compact and ruggedized setups have been developed, showing frequency instabilities at the 10 –15 level for averaging times between 1 s and 10,000 s. We introduce optical clock technologies for applications in future GNSS and present the current status of our developments of iodine-based optical frequency references.

Miniaturized Tunable External Cavity Diode Laser with Single-Mode Operation and a Narrow Linewidth at 633 nm

A miniaturized, standalone tunable semiconductor laser module operating at a wavelength of 633 nm with a footprint as small as 10 mm $\times$ 5 mm is presented. The module is based on an external cavity diode laser system with no moving parts and features a frequency tuning range of 25 GHz with a spectral linewidth of approximately 10 MHz. An output power of 10 mW within a nearly diffraction-limited beam is demonstrated. The electrical power consumption, including thermal management, is around 0.7 W.

Optical atomic clocks based on the spectroscopy of strontium (Sr) atoms currently provide the most accurate time and frequency measurements. They reach fractional frequency uncertainties in the range of 10 ⁻¹⁸ [1], which makes them promising candidates for the redefinition of the second and for improving, for example, the accuracy of satellite navigation.

Narrow linewidth micro-integrated high power diode laser module for deployment in space

Semiconductor laser technology has shown to be a promising alternative to other laser technologies, e.g. solid state lasers, for employment in coherent satellite communication and fundamental physics applications. Being compact, robust, energy- and cost-efficient these semiconductor lasers fulfill the key mandatory requirements for deployment in space. At the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, we have developed a versatile technology platform for integration of any two semiconductor chips, be they active (e.g. laser, amplifier) or passive (e.g. phase modulator), in a fiber coupled laser module wherein all components are either space qualified or space compatible. Here we present a narrow linewidth high power laser module based on this platform that will be used in an iodine-based optical reference onboard a sounding rocket. We discuss its electro-optical performance. We further give an outlook on an ultra-narrow linewidth technology demonstrator laser module.
