Strain-rate sensitivity analysis of microwave processed polypropylene-carbon nanotube composites

The study investigates the strain rate sensitivity of microwave-processed polypropylene nanocomposites containing a 10% volume fraction of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), synthesized using a domestic microwave applicator (DMA). Through experimental analysis under various loading conditions including tensile, flexural, and multistep relaxation loads, the mechanical strength of these nanocomposites is assessed alongside destructive testing and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results. Mathematical models are proposed to elucidate the mechanical response under different strain rate loadings. The nanocomposite exhibits elastoplastic behavior, with maximum elongation observed at a strain rate of 3 mm/min. During uniaxial tension tests, the ultimate strength increases significantly from 5.74 MPa at 1.52 mm/min to 13.8 MPa and 15.7 MPa at 1 mm/min and 2 mm/min respectively during multistep relaxation tests. The true stress-true strain curve follows a power law of strain hardening under high strain rate tensile tests. Flexural tests reveal maximum flexural strength and modulus at a strain rate of 1.25 mm/min, with elongation peaking at 1.50 mm/min. Mechanical properties, including modulus and ultimate strength, show an increasing trend with strain rate until a limiting value is reached, beyond which thermal softening occurs. SEM fractography illustrates the random and spatial distribution of CNTs at low strain rates, whereas agglomeration and CNT pull-out are observed at higher strain rates. This comprehensive analysis sheds light on the intricate mechanical behavior of microwave-processed polypropylene nanocomposites, offering insights into their potential applications and optimization strategies.

Influence of microstructural defects on free flexural vibration of cracked functionally graded plates in thermal medium using XFEM

This paper presents the influence of microstructural defects on the vibration characteristics of the cracked functionally graded plate in a thermal environment. Extended finite element formulation is implemented to model the cracked functionally graded plate based on higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). The level set function is implemented to track the crack in the functionally graded plate domain. The crack in the functionally graded plate domain is addressed by enriching the primary variable with additional functions using the partition of unity technique. The power-law distribution is implemented for the gradation of the material properties along the thickness direction to form functionally graded material (FGM). The microstructural defects are assumed as porosities in the plate. The porosity index determines the porosity in the FGM plate. The convergence and comparative study have been performed to verify the current formulation’s efficacy, accuracy, and reliability. Further, various numerical examples are presented. The effects of different influential parameters like porosity, volume fraction index, crack length, thickness ratio, and boundary condition on the natural frequencies have been discussed in detail. The presented computational approach is accurate, efficient, and robust enough to investigate the vibration response of the cracked FGM porous plates, which can provide a reference for future research by researchers.

Comparative Investigation of Se–Te–M (M = Sb, Ge) Semiconducting Glassy Alloys: Thermal Characterization

Structural and thermal measurements have been performed in glassy Se 78 Te 18 M 4 (M = Sb and Ge) alloys to study the effect of Sb and Ge additives on the kinetics of glass transition and crystallization. Kinetic parameters of glass transition and crystallization such as the activation energy of glass transition ( E g ), the activation energy of crystallization ( E c ) have been determined using different non-isothermal methods. It was found that Ge was more suitable dopant for phase change memory (PCM) devices due to its low activation energies as compared to Sb dopant.

Effect of thermal annealing on structure and optical band gap of amorphous Se72Te25Sb3 thin films

Thin films of a−Se72Te25Sb3 were prepared by vacuum evaporation technique in a base pressure of 10−6 Torr on to well cleaned glass substrate. a−Se72Te25Sb3 thin films were annealed at different temperatures below their crystallization temperatures for 2h. The structural analysis of the films has been investigated using X-ray diffraction technique. The optical band gap of as prepared and annealed films as a function of photon energy in the wavelength range 400–1100 nm has been studied. It has been found that the optical band gap decreases with increasing annealing temperatures in the present system.
