Shared State Synchronization for HLA-Based Distributed Simulation

The problem of shared state is well known to the parallel and distributed simulation research community. In this article, the authors revisit the problem of shared state in the context of a High Level Architecture (HLA)-based distributed simulation. A middleware approach is proposed to solve this problem within the framework of the HLA runtime infrastructure. Four solutions to this problem are implemented in the middleware using receive-order messages. The authors discuss the implementation issues of these four solutions in the middleware. Experimental results comparing the performance of these four solutions against a simple request-reply approach using timestamp-order messages are also presented.

Distributed simulation and industry: potentials and pitfalls

We present the views of five researchers and practitioners of distributed simulation. Collectively we attempt to address what the implications of distributed simulation are for industry. It is hoped that the views contained herein, and the presentations made by the panelists at the 2002 Winter Simulation Conference will raise awareness and stimulate further discussion on the application of distributed simulation methods and technology in an area that is yet to benefit from the arguable economic benefits that this technique promises.

Evaluating alternative solutions for cloning in distributed simulation

Simulation cloning is designed to satisfy the requirement of examining alternative scenarios concurrently. This paper discusses the issues involved in cloning distributed simulations based on the high-level architecture (HLA) as well as proposing tentative solutions. Alternative solutions are compared from both the qualitative and quantitative point of view. In terms of federation organization, candidate solutions can be classified into the single-federation and the multiple-federation categories. In order to guarantee the correctness and optimize the performance of the whole cloning-enabled distributed simulation, the single-federation solution requires an additional mechanism to isolate the interactions amongst alternative executions. Data distribution management (DDM) is one of the candidate approaches. To measure the trade-off between complexity and efficiency, we introduce a series of experiments to benchmark various solutions at the RTI level. The benchmark results indicate that the single-federation solution provides encouraging performance when using DDM.

Symbiotic simulation for optimisation of tool operations in semiconductor manufacturing

A symbiotic simulation-based problem solver agent is proposed that can be used to automatically solve decision making problems regarding the operations of the various tools of an entire semiconductor manufacturing plant (fab). In comparison with common practice decision making, performed by human operators, the advantage of the symbiotic simulation-based approach is its ability to simulate how decisions will affect operations in different parts of the fab. Previous work has been concerned with the optimization of a single tool group. Here, we show that our approach can also be applied to control an entire fab which typically involves several hundred tools. Unlike other approaches, ours is not limited to a set of pre-defined decision making policies. Instead, the problem solver agent can directly schedule setup changes for an arbitrary number of tools. Experiments show that higher throughput can be achieved by using our approach as compared to common practice decision making.

Distributed simulation and manufacturing: synchronization and management of shared state in HLA-based distributed simulation

The HLA Runtime Infrastructure can support a conservative simulation protocol for its time management service. However, the performance of conservative simulation protocols is very much dependent on lookahead that one can extract out of a simulation model. Also the most conservative value has to be taken in order to ensure the causality constraint. In this paper, we propose two algorithms, namely pullRO and pushRO, that allow one to replace some of the timestamp order (TSO) messages (possibly those causing zero lookahead values) with receive order (RO) messages. This removes the time constraint that these messages impose on the lower bound timestamp (LBTS) calculation, which in turn will improve the time advancement rate of federates. The algorithms still ensure the causality constraint and a middleware approach is used to preserve the semantics of the RTI APIs. The performance of the two algorithms is compared against a baseline model where no TSO messages are replaced.

Integration of discrete event simulation models with framework-based business applications

Simulation models and business application software as they are used for decision support in enterprise management are both representations of an enterprise's actual operations. We describe a unified simulation and application framework where it is possible to represent the entire performance process along a supply chain in a unified business model, improve its performance with discrete event simulation technology, and then generate and implement the corresponding business application software from the same unified model, based on a so-called framework-based application technology which allows implementation of changes derived from simulation analysis with minimal effort and time. This enables a company to optimise not only operational processes such as shopfloor or warehouse operations but also business processes such as planning, order management and scheduling through simulation.

An easy approach to extending a short term simulation model for long term forecast in semiconductor industry

The operational decision making in the BOSCH's 200mm wafer fabrication facility has been guided by short term simulation forecasts. The forecasts provides the capability of identifying daily bottlenecks, forecasting daily fab outs, optimizing the preventive maintenance plans and personal resource planning. Now there is a pressing need to extend the forecast time horizon to several months for making decisions such as analyzing different ramp up scenarios, evaluating the impact of dispatch rules, identifying bottlenecks for capital investment, etc. As the short term model has achieved forecast accuracy of above 90%, it is used as the basis to generate the long term model. In this paper, we discuss the key issues associated with this model generation process. These issues are: process flows compression, flexible equipment dedications, model warm-up, wafer start generation, and future fab capacity changes. Our approach enables us to use the same model generation framework for both models.

Predicting Purchase Behaviour

The Juster Scale is a purchase probability scale used to predict the actual purchase rate in a population from a sample of consumers from that population. Several overseas studies have demonstrated the predictive ability of the Juster Scale, particularly for cars. This paper reports the findings of two New Zealand studies involving the Juster Scale. The first confirms the superior predictive ability of the Juster Scale compared to buying intentions scales, and both studies confirm the practicality of using the Juster Scale for predicting purchases of a range of items including durables, services and fastmoving consumer goods. The ability of the Juster Scale to accurately predict car purchases was corroborated, but the accuracy of predictions for other items was variable.
