Gas Distribution Mapping (GDM) is essential in monitoring hazardous environments, where uneven sampling and spatial sparsity of data present significant challenges. Traditional methods for GDM often fall short in accuracy and expressiveness. Modern learning-based approaches employing Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) require regular-sized input data, limiting their adaptability to irregular and sparse datasets typically encountered in GDM. This study addresses these shortcomings by showcasing Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) for learning-based GDM on irregular and spatially sparse sensor data. Our Radius-Based, Bi-Directionally connected GNN (RABI-GNN) was trained on a synthetic gas distribution dataset on which it outperforms our previous CNN-based model while overcoming its constraints. We demonstrate the flexibility of RABI-GNN by applying it to real-world data obtained in an industrial steel factory, highlighting promising opportunities for more accurate GDM models.

Auswirkungen von unfallbedingtem Behälterversagen bei alternativen Pkw-Antrieben - Teil 1: Problemstellung, Stand der Technik und Voruntersuchungen

Flussige und komprimierte Gase sind in Deutschland, Europa und der Welt vielfaltig als alternative Kraftstoffe im Einsatz. Diese werden unter teilweise hohem Druck in robusten Behaltern an Bord gespeichert. Ein Versagen des Treibstoffbehalters im Schadensfall sollen verschiedene Sicherheitseinrichtungen, auch bei einem eventuell unfallbedingt auftretenden Fahrzeugbrand, verhindern. Sind diese Sicherheitseinrichtungen unfallbedingt beschadigt oder liegen die Belastungen dieser Einrichtung auserhalb ihres Auslegungsbereichs, ist ein Versagen des Behalters dennoch moglich. Dadurch kann es zur Bildung eines explosionsfahigen Brennstoff-Luft-Gemischs mit den entsprechenden Folgen fur Fahrgaste, Einsatzkrafte und Umfeld kommen. Die Bundesanstalt fur Materialforschung und -prufung (BAM) untersucht im Forschungsprojekt CoFi-ABV mit umfangreichen zerstorenden Versuchsreihen im Realmasstab die Folgen des unfallbedingten Versagens von Behaltern fur alternative Kraftstoffe und Masnahmen zur Reduktion dieser Folgen im Rahmen einer ganzheitlichen Auswirkungsbetrachtung. Dieser Beitrag ist der Start einer Reihe und soll die Problemstellung sowie die Projektinhalte umfassend erlautern.

New or Interesting Records of Lichen-Forming and Lichenicolous Fungi from Northern Germany

New or interesting records of lichen-forming and lichenicolous fungi from northern Germany. — Herzogia 23: 85–91.Records of 19 lichen-forming ascomycetes and two lichenicolous fungi from northern Germany are presented. Bacidia scopulicola and Caloplaca verruculifera are new to Germany; Collemopsidium foveolatum and Verrucaria striatula are reported from Germany for the first time after more than 50 years, as is Dactylosporum tegularum after more than 100 years. Caloplaca albolutescens is recorded from Lower Saxony for the first time, whereas Bacidia friesiana has been rediscovered after more than 80 years. Agonimia vouauxii, Arthonia phaeobaea, Bacidina inundata, Dactylospora tegularum, and Verrucaria elaeina are new to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Agonimia vouauxii, Belonia incarnata, and Collema bachmanianum are new to Schleswig-Holstein. Arthonia phaeobaea and Ramalina siliquosa have been rediscovered in Schleswig-Holstein after more than 50 years.

Scientific Report - Sampling multi-scale and multi-taxon plant diversity data in the subalpine and alpine habitats of Switzer-land: Report on the 14th EDGG Field Workshop

The 14 th EDGG Field Workshop took place from the 4 th to the 14 th of September 2020 in Switzerland, and was devoted to the vegetation of open habitats in the subalpine and alpine zones.In total, 26 EDGG Biodiversity Plots (nested plots with grain sizes of 0.0001 to 100 m²) were sampled in different open habitat types (grasslands, heathlands, screes, snowbeds, fens) in three regions of Switzerland, both over acidic and base-rich bedrock.Additionally, three normal plots of 10 m² were sampled in high-elevation Festuco-Brometea stands in Zermatt.Across all grain sizes, stands showed 10-25% higher means and 50-94% higher maxima for total richness of vascular plants, terricolous bryophytes and lichens compared with data from the 12 th EDGG Field Workshop in dry and semi-dry grasslands of the central valleys of the Swiss Alps.We found outstanding preliminary maxima of total richness of 61, 109 and 163 species in 1, 10 and 100 m² respectively, in an unused alpine grassland over limestone (Seslerion).Both particularly variable and partly extremely rich was the bryophyte and lichen flora of the analysed stands, with up to 33 bryophyte and 22 lichen species in 10-m² plots.We report the liverwort Cephaloziella dentata as new for Switzerland, found in a thermophilous subalpine heathland at Alp Glivers, Surselva, Grisons.Overall, our preliminary data suggest that some of the sampled subalpine and alpine habitats are among the most species-rich communities at small scales if bryophytes and lichens are also considered.Based on this finding, we recommend that these two taxonomic groups be more regularly included in surveying and particularly in monitoring programs for vegetation.The Scientific Report is supplemented by a photo diary that provides impressions of work and life during the Field Workshop.

Drone-Based Localization of Hazardous Chemicals by Passive Smart Dust

The distribution of tiny sensors over a specific area was first proposed in the late 1990s as a concept known as Smart Dust. Several efforts focused primarily on computing and networking capabilities but quickly ran into problems related to power supply, cost, data transmission, and environmental pollution. To overcome these limitations, we propose using paper-based (confetti-like) chemosensors that exploit the inherent selectivity of chemical reagents, such as colorimetric indicators. In this work, cheap and biodegradable passive sensors made from cellulose could successfully indicate the presence of hazardous chemicals, e.g., strong acids, by a significant color change. A conventional color digital camera attached to a drone could easily detect this from a safe distance. The collected data was processed to define the hazardous area. Our work presents a combination of the smart dust concept, chemosensing, paper-based sensor technology, and low-cost drones for flexible, sensitive, economical, and rapid detection of hazardous chemicals in high-risk scenarios.

Autonomous Gas-Sensitive Microdrone: Wind Vector Estimation and Gas Distribution Mapping

This article presents the development and validation of an autonomous, gas sensitive microdrone that is capable of estimating the wind vector in real time using only the onboard control unit of the microdrone and performing gas distribution mapping (DM). Two different sampling approaches are suggested to address this problem. On the one hand, a predefined trajectory is used to explore the target area with the microdrone in a real-world gas DM experiment. As an alternative sampling approach, we introduce an adaptive strategy that suggests next sampling points based on an artificial potential field (APF). Initial results in real-world experiments demonstrate the capability of the proposed adaptive sampling strategy for gas DM and its use for gas source localization.
