Computational study of combined effects of tip leakage jets and wetness on the performance of steam turbine exhaust system using actuator disc model

A numerical model to study the individual and combined effects of the tip clearance jets and the presence of wetness on the performance of the steam turbine exhaust hood has been developed. The Eulerian-Eulerian wet steam flow equations along with mass, momentum, energy, and k- ε model equations are solved in the present study. An increase in inlet wetness level improves the pressure recovery capacity of the steam turbine exhaust hood by reducing the total pressure loss. The presence of moisture causes a turbulence attenuation which in turn reduces the vortex strength. The combined effect of the tip leakage jets and the presence of inlet wetness improve the performance of the exhaust system further. However, the presence of a non-uniform condenser pressure gradient caused by the temperature variation of the cooling water flow increases the level of complexity of the flow in the exhaust system deteriorating the performance.

Investigation of burnout effect in turbine blade tip leakage at transonic conditions – a numerical study

Abstract In the aviation industry, turbine blade tip leakage significantly impacts the economy due to aerodynamic losses in the turbine. The tip leakage flow increases when the tip surface is exposed to high heat loads from the burnout effect, contributing to nearly 30% of the total loss in the turbine stage. This study numerically investigates two-dimensional flat tip and burnt-out tip models under different flow accelerations at transonic conditions. Variations in the discharge coefficient are examined for different pressure ratios across the tip gap. Flow and shockwave patterns for various blade tip geometries are obtained and analyzed. The burnt-out tip notably increases tip leakage, and a significant decrease in turbine efficiency is observed beyond a critical burnout limit. The quantified losses at different stages of blade tip burnout are used to predict the effective operational life of the blade. A correlation is developed to relate the non-dimensional tip-leakage flow parameters to the normalized blade-tip geometry.

Recent Developments in Supercritical CO2-Based Sustainable Power Generation Technologies

Global warming and environmental pollution from greenhouse gas emissions are hitting an all-time high consistently year after year. In 2022, energy-related emissions accounted for 87% of the overall global emissions. The fossil fuel-based conventional power systems also need timely upgrades to improve their cycle efficiency and reduce their impact on the environment. Supercritical CO2 systems and cycles are gaining attention because of their higher efficiencies and their compatibility with varied energy sources. The present work is a detailed overview of the recent developments in supercritical CO2-based power generation technologies. The supercritical CO2-based Brayton and Rankine power cycles and their improvisations in industrial applications are also discussed in detail. The advances in heat exchanger technology for supercritical CO2 systems are another focus of the study. The energy, exergy, and economical (3E) analysis is carried out on various supercritical CO2 power cycles reported in the literature and the data are concisely and intuitively presented. The review concludes by listing the identified directions for future technology development and areas of immediate research interest. A roadmap is proposed for easing the commercialization of supercritical CO2 technologies to immediately address the growing challenges and concerns arising from energy-related emissions.

An Alternative Numerical Model for Investigating Three- Dimensional Steam Turbine Exhaust Hood

A proper design of exhaust hood geometry is very much essential in order to improve the overall efficiency of the steam turbine plant. The geometry of the non-axisymmetric exhaust hood makes the fluid flow at the exit of the steam turbine to be radially and circumferentially non-uniform. This work involves computational simulation of steam turbine asymmetric exhaust hood flows by incorporating the actuator-disc concept. The ANSYS FLUENT, finite volume based CFD solver is used for the present computational study. In the present simulation, the implementation of actuator disc boundary conditions with and without tip leakage is described in detail. The Actuator disc model approach exhibits a similar steam turbine exhaust hood flow asymmetry and static pressure recovery compared with the results reported in the literature, highlighting the applicability of the present model in coupling the rotor tip leakage jet with the steam turbine hood flow structure with less computational effort.

Energy and Exergy Analysis of an Ejector Expansion Transcritical Carbon Dioxide Air Conditioning System

A carbon dioxide based transcritical air conditioning system integrated with an ejector is thermodynamically modeled and the system is simulated for different ambient conditions. Throughout the analysis, the isentropic efficiency of motive nozzle, suction nozzle and diffuser is assumed as 85% while the mixing takes place at constant pressure. A step-by-step iterative procedure is adopted to obtain the pressure lift and entrainment ratio. The present thermodynamic model is validated with the experimental results available in the open literature. Results were then compared to a conventional transcritical carbon dioxide system working between the same operating conditions. Results show a significant improvement of about 21% and more in system performance compared to a conventional system working under the same operating conditions. To justify the application of an ejector as an expansion work recovery device and to identify the component level exergy destruction rate, a comprehensive exergy analysis is implemented and the results show 20% reduction in total exergy destruction rate of the system, with an ejector.

Computational investigation of multi-phase flow effects on the performance of the steam turbine exhaust hood

In this research work, a computational modeling of multi-phase flow through an asymmetric exhaust hood is presented. The three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations along with the standard [Formula: see text] turbulent model and the Eulerian–Eulerian multi-phase equations were solved. The coupling of the last stage turbine blades and the exhaust hood has been carried out using the actuator disc model, which is less computationally demanding. The finite volume-based commercial computational fluid dynamics solver, ANSYS FLUENT, is used for the present numerical simulations. The effects of wetness on the flow structure and the pressure recovery capacity of a steam turbine exhaust hood have been investigated. One of the salient findings is that the pressure recovery capacity of a steam turbine exhaust hood enhances due to wetness effects. Wetness-induced turbulence damping is noted to be playing a crucial role in the enhancement of pressure recovery capacity of an exhaust hood.

Numerical investigations of fluid flow and heat transfer in double forward facing step in the presence of a fin

Fluid flow overstep has many interesting physics such as flow separation, reattachment, recirculation, development of wall boundary layer, and primary and secondary vortices are few of them. Numerical simulation of this situation has been successfully employed for more than 3 decades. In the present investigation, a fin is introduced in the flow passage and explored its role in fluid flow and heat transfer. A fin is attached either to the top wall or bottom wall is considered and its position and size are varied. Further Reynolds number is also varied by assuming the flow is turbulent. Commercial software ANSYS Fluent is used for conducting the numerical simulation. For all the cases results were reported for flow physics and heat transfer in terms of streamline contour, isotherm, local Nusselt number as well as average Nusselt number. It is observed that the local Nusselt number is varied to a maximum value and further is decreased in the downstream direction. By varying the Reynolds number average Nusselt number can be improved from 20% to 85%. The fin size influences to increase of the average Nusselt number if it exceeds 0.3H. However, beyond a certain distance, the location of the fin is less influenced for improving the average Nusselt number. 22% hike in average Nusselt number is achieved when fin is located at top wall when compared to no fin case. However, the peak Nusselt number always occurred at the reattachment of the primary vortex.
