Polarization Switching Induced by Slowing the Dynamic Swinglike Motion in a Flexible Organic Dielectric

Molecular motions with large amplitude in close-packed crystals accompany large distortions of the molecular configuration, which generally generate orientational structural transitions between diverse states and enable the tuning of their bulk physical properties. We present a flexible organic dielectric, di-n-butylammonium chlorodifluoroacetate (1), which exhibits a reversible temperature-induced spontaneous polarization switching at 243 K (Tc). Ferroelectric hysteresis loop measurements and second harmonic generation experiments reveal its excellent polarization switching capacity with spontaneous polarization of 3.9 μC cm–2. Temperature-dependent solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance measurements clearly elucidate the dynamical mechanism of polarization switching of 1. Above Tc, an active swinglike motion in long-chain di-n-butylammonium (DBA) cation is confirmed, resulting in complete obliteration of the dipole moments. When the temperature decreases below Tc, the swinglike motions are frozen and the whole DBA cation becomes considerably more rigid, corresponding to polar order, which greatly contributes to polarization switching. It is believed that this finding opens up a potential strategy for the design of new polar materials as switchable electric devices.

Development of a Freshness Assay for Royal Jelly Based on the Temperature- and Time-Dependent Changes of Antimicrobial Effectiveness and Proteome Dynamics of Royal Jelly Proteins

Although the antimicrobial, nutritional, and health-promoting properties of royal jelly (RJ) have been widely confirmed, the effects of storage temperature and time on RJ quality remain to be further explored. Herein, the antimicrobial and proteomic dynamics of RJ stored under different conditions were comprehensively investigated to identify consistent and sensitive markers of RJ degradation. We confirmed the negative correlation between antimicrobial properties and increased the storage temperature and duration in RJ. Using surface plasmon resonance, we showed the protein degradation-induced conformation changes in RJ, which reflected the overall variation in RJ proteins caused by the storage conditions. Further proteomic and western blotting analyses demonstrated the sensitivity and reliability of major RJ protein 4 (MRJP4) as a measure of temperature- and time-dependent RJ changes. Based on these results, we developed a colloidal gold immunoassay strip for MRJP4 detection, providing a reliable, simple, and rapid method for the evaluation of RJ freshness.

Studies on the chemical constituents from Caragana intermedia

Objective To study the chemical constituents from Caragana intermedia. Methods The compounds were separated by chromatography methods. Their structures were identified by spectral analysis. Results Eight compounds were isolated and identified as 7,5'-dihydroxy-3 '-methoxyisoflavone-7-O-beta-D-glucoside (1), isorhamnetin 7-O-alpha-L-rhamnoside (2), 3, 4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (3), N-trans-caffeoyltyramine (4), D-3-O-methyl-inositol (5),7alpha-hydroxy-beta-sitosterol (6),7beta-hydroxy-beta-sitosterol (7) and stearic acid (8). Conclusion All these compounds were obtained from this plant for the first time.

ZnTeMoO6: a strong second-harmonic generation material originating from three types of asymmetric building units

A transparent ZnTeMoO6 crystal with dimensions of ∼12 × 10 × 1 mm3 has been successfully grown using the flux method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that ZnTeMoO6 features a neutral layered structure consisting of three types of asymmetric building units, i.e. TeO4 polyhedra with a stereoactive lone pair, MoO4 tetrahedra, and ZnO6 octahedra with a large polar displacement. The ZnTeMoO6 crystal is non-hygroscopic, and resistant to diluted HNO3 aqua-solution. It is also thermally stable up to 669 °C and thereafter melts incongruently. Transmittance spectra of ZnTeMoO6 show a broad transparent window in the range of 350 nm–5.4 μm. On the basis of the powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements, ZnTeMoO6 is type-I phase-matchable with a very strong SHG efficiency of ∼10.5 × KDP. Furthermore, calculations on the dipole moments indicate that the strong SHG response may arise from the high polarizability of the three types of asymmetric building units.
