Optical manipulation of single microparticle for microfluidic flow rate sensing

Sensitive flowmeter with a large dynamic range is highly desirable for microfluidic applications. We developed an optofluidic flow rate sensor, with a dynamic range of about 3 orders of magnitude, based on the optical manipulation of a microparticle by a single mode fiber (SMF) with a flat endface. A single polystyrene microsphere was trapped on the optical axis by the 980 nm laser emitting from SMF and the force balance between the optical force and flow force was used for sensing. The manipulation distance was detected as a function of the flow rate. The measurement range of the flow rate can cover 20 - 22000 nL/min with a laser power of 11.4 mW to 146.3 mW. The maximum manipulation length is about 715 μm. The experimental results indicate that the sensor has a good repeatability for the flow rate measurement.

Salting-in Effect of Zwitterionic Polymer Hydrogel Facilitates Atmospheric Water Harvesting

Hygroscopic salt-hydrogel composite sorbents have attracted increasing attention for atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) applications but suffer from the salting-out effect. To this end, this work, for the first time, discovers that the salting-in effect possessed by a zwitterionic hydrogel is able to facilitate water vapor sorption by the hygroscopic salt under otherwise the same conditions. For demonstration, zwitterionic hydrogel of poly-[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide (PDMAPS) was synthesized, and the hygroscopic salt of LiCl was embedded into PDMAPS to produce the salt-hydrogel composite. LiCl salt not only endows the sorbent with high water vapor sorption capacity but also facilitates the dissociation of self-association between cationic and anionic groups of PDMAPS. This salting-in effect was evaluated and confirmed experimentally and via density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The salting-in effect renders the zwitterionic hydrogel matrix with enhanced swelling capacity, leading to the sorbent's high AWH performance. With a photothermal component of CNT integrated into the sorbent, a fully solar energy-driven AWH process was demonstrated outdoors. This study provides important guidance to the design of hydrogel-based AWH sorbents.

Toxoplasma gondii Causes Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes by Damaging Uterine Tissue-Resident NK Cells That Secrete Growth-Promoting Factors

Abstract Vertical transmission of the intracellular parasite, Toxoplasma gondii can lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes especially when infection occurs in early pregnancy. Decidual natural killer (dNK) cells accumulate at the maternal-fetal interface in large numbers during early pregnancy. Their nutritional roles during infection with T. gondii remain poorly defined. In the present study, we demonstrated that a functional deficiency of the uterine tissue-resident NK (trNK) cells, a subset of dNK cells, contributes to the adverse pregnancy outcomes induced by T. gondii in early pregnancy. Adverse pregnancy outcomes could be ameliorated by adoptive transfer of trNK cells. Moreover, fetal growth restriction could be improved after supplementation of growth-promoting factors. In addition to the widely recognized disturbance of the immune balance at the interface between the mother and the fetus, our study reveals a novel mechanism in T. gondii that contributes to the adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Designing a next generation solar crystallizer for real seawater brine treatment with zero liquid discharge

Abstract Proper disposal of industrial brine has been a critical environmental challenge. Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) brine treatment holds great promise to the brine disposal, but its application is limited by the intensive energy consumption of its crystallization process. Here we propose a new strategy that employs an advanced solar crystallizer coupled with a salt crystallization inhibitor to eliminate highly concentrated waste brine. The rationally designed solar crystallizer exhibited a high water evaporation rate of 2.42 kg m −2 h −1 under one sun illumination when treating real concentrated seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) brine (21.6 wt%). The solar crystallizer array showed an even higher water evaporation rate of 48.0 kg m −2 per day in the outdoor field test, suggesting a great potential for practical application. The solar crystallizer design and the salt crystallization inhibition strategy proposed and confirmed in this work provide a low-cost and sustainable solution for industrial brine disposal with ZLD.
