The systematic design method for coded modulation on fading channels

A brief survey of recent developments in combined channel coding and digital modulation (in short coded modulation) for Rayleigh fading channels is presented. Theoretical guidance for design and identification of the most important system parameters are given. Two constructive schemes that are suited for the fading channel are discussed. The systematic design method for coded modulation on the fading channel is summarized, which can construct coded modulation systems to give optimum asymptotic performance on the fading channel. Some proposed schemes are compared according to the design method.

Application of Markov model in mobile communication channel

An adaptive Markov model with three states for the mobile communication channel is studied and simulated. The error sequence describing the long burst error characteristics of the model channel is generated on a computer. A test method using a threshold technique is given to verify the accuracy of the adaptive channel model.

Matrix approach for fast implementations of logarithmic MAP decoding of turbo codes

This paper describes two new matrix transform algorithms for the max-log-MAP decoding of turbo codes. In the proposed algorithms, the successive decoding procedures carried out in the conventional max-log-MAP algorithm are performed in parallel, and well formulated into a set of simple and regular matrix operations, which can therefore considerably speed up the decoding operations and reduce the computational complexity. The matrix max-log-MAP algorithms also maintain the advantage of the general logarithmic MAP like algorithms in avoiding complex numerical representation problems. They particularly facilitate the implementations of the logarithmic MAP like algorithms in special-purpose parallel processing VLSI hardware architectures. The matrix algorithms also allow simple implementations by using shift registers. The proposed implementation architectures for the matrix max-log-MAP decoding can effectively reduce the memory capacity and simplify the data accesses and transfers required by the conventional max-log-MAP as well as MAP algorithms.

High-performance SOVA decoding for turbo codes over cdma2000 mobile radio

An improved version of the soft-output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA), which has been theoretically proven to be equivalent to the max-log-maximum a posteriori (max-log-MAP) algorithm but with greatly reduced decoding complexity, is applied to turbo codes over the 3rd generation cdma2000 mobile radio link. The BER and FER performances of the improved SOVA are evaluated by computer simulation, and compared with the max-log-MAP and the conventional SOVA algorithms. The simulation results verify that the improved SOVA scheme can offer the performance comparable to the max-log-MAP scheme, while the conventional SOVA is approximately 0.4 dB inferior to the max-log-MAP at 10/sup -3/ BER.

Efficient design of trellis coded modulation for the channels with different fading

Based on an extensive analysis on the advantages and potential of multiple trellis coded modulation (MTCM), an efficient design method of a trellis coded modulation system for channels with any degree of fading is presented, during which the advances in the designs of coded modulation for both AWGN and fading channels (especially Rayleigh fading channel) are summarized. According to the systematic design procedures proposed, we construct some multiple trellis codes that can provide superior performance on channels with different degrees of fading to those produced by the conventional design.
