Enhancing Methane Storage in Clathrate Hydrates Using Leaf Extract Catalysts: Advancing Sustainable Energy Storage

Gas hydrates have garnered attention for their potential to capture and store large gas volumes in their petite lattice-like water structure. This study explores the feasibility of enhancing methane hydrate conversion by hastening hydrate process kinetics, maximizing methane uptake, and storage using benign additives sourced from dried leaves of Calotropis procera (CTP) (milkweed) and Nyctanthes arbor-tristis (NA) (night-flowering jasmine). These bioadditives were compared with the well-known methane hydrate former sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and pure water as a baseline. Methane hydrate formation occurred at approximately 271.7 ± 0.78 K with bioadditives, whereas SDS exhibited formation at around 278.15 ± 1.37 K under stirred and nonstirred conditions. Bioadditives required twice the subcooling of the SDS system, and the methane uptake kinetics were faster in nonstirred conditions and doubled under stirring. Overall methane captured with the selected additives was similar to that of SDS, with slightly higher uptake under stirring. These bioextracts displayed favorable methane hydrate affinity, attributed to mixed constituents including alkaloids, flavonoids, cardenolides, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds. These additives, which are biodegradable and less toxic, stand as eco-friendly alternatives to organic agents like SDS. Offering nonfoaming properties for smoother operations and reusability, bioadditives hold promise for sustainable applications.

Efficient Storage of Methane in Hydrate Form Using Soybean Powder

Natural gas is a promising future source for the increasing energy demand. It is partially clean energy with fewer environmental impacts, and it is necessary to develop technologies to cater to the supply chain. Due to their inherent structural properties, gas hydrates or clathrate hydrates are promising materials for capturing and storing methane gas. In the present study, the experimental investigations were performed to assess the utilization of soybean powder (SBP) as a promoting additive compared to sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) for methane hydrate formation. The methane hydrate formation temperature and pressure with SBP are 277.8 ± 3.2 K, 7050.9 ± 76.2 kPa, similar to SDS 277.2 ± 0.3 K, 7446.3 ± 5.7 kPa in the non-stirred system. The gas uptake capacity is about 94.2 ± 4.5 v/v and 92.4 ± 4.6 v/v with SBP and SDS, which is ~60% of the practical, achievable limit. The time for the 90% of hydrate conversion is ~4.6 times higher for SBP than SDS. The more prolonged kinetics is ascribed to the complex constituents in the SBP. In contrast to the SDS solution, no foam was produced in the sample of the SBP solution. The current studies demonstrate that SBP can be utilized to develop cleaner and more effective promoters for methane hydrate formation without foam creation.

Storage of Methane Gas in the Form of Clathrates in the Presence of Natural Bioadditives

Methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), the important greenhouse gases, are capable of forming clathrate hydrates under some suitable thermodynamic conditions. The gas storage capacity of these materials is high, and therefore they are often useful in gas storage applications. Certain expensive and toxic chemicals are employed to accelerate/decelerate the process. In this study, we report rapid (∼30–50 min) and effective (∼80%) methane hydrate conversion in the presence of three naturally occurring additives such as dry powders from Nelumbo nucifera (Indian lotus), Piper betle (betel), and Azadirachta indica (neem), at lower concentrations (0.5 wt %). Obtained results were carefully compared with the well-known kinetic promoter (sodium dodecyl sulfate). All the biomaterials are equally good kinetic promoters for methane hydrates, although the required subcooling is significantly large. However, no hydrate formation is observed with CO2 gas.

The Role of Stirring and Amino Acid Mixtures to Surpass the Sluggishness of CO₂ Hydrates

Clathrate hydrates are attractive materials for storing greenhouse gases such as methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Inefficient water-to-hydrate conversion and sluggishness in kinetics are significant impeding factors. Some additives in lower dosages help accelerate the hydrate conversion process. The aqueous solution with amino acids (0.5 wt %), l-phenylalanine (l-phe), and l-threonine (l-thr) inhibits the CO2 hydrate formation in static (0 rpm) conditions. However, l-methionine (l-met) and l-valine (l-val) are promoters under these conditions. A mild stirring (≥100 rpm) of the aqueous solution favored the hydrate conversion. The overall gas uptake, under continuous stirring, progressively increased by about 15–20%. Another way to improve the storage capacity in l-phe and l-thr aqueous systems in the static reactor is by adding a small quantity of aqueous solutions of l-met or l-val (20% by volume). The overall gas uptake and kinetics under static conditions significantly improved in the l-thr dominant system. However, the gas uptake synergistically improved in mixed solutions with l-phe and l-met, while the gas uptake was insignificant in solution with l-phe and l-val.

Synergistic and antagonistic effects of amino acids in clathrate hydrates of greenhouse gases

Gas hydrates are the indispensable materials in curtailing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly given their larger volumetric compressibility. However, sluggish and inefficient conversions are notable hindrances, which can be surpassed by using certain additives. We used aqueous solutions with 0.5 wt % amino acids (l-phe, l-met, l-cys, l-val, and l-leu) as additives. Individually all are suitable promoters for CH4 hydrates, while the same is true for CO2 hydrates also excepting l-phe. However, a small amount of l-met or l-cys can assist the l-phe rich solution as a better promoter for CO2 hydrates. The solution mixture synergistically enhances the gas uptake by a factor of 10. The addition of l-val or l-leu shows an antagonistic effect, and the CO2 hydrate conversion is insignificant until the solution mixture became rich in l-val or l-leu. Ex-situ micro-Raman studies unambiguously confirm the solid phase as clathrate hydrate. The perturbations in the OH-stretching mode due to synergistic or antagonistic effects in amino acids mixed solutions are small but subtle.

Illustration of Hydrate-Based Methane Gas Separation in Coal Bed Methane Type Gas Composition at Lower Pressures

Coal bed methane is an emerging and prosperous unconventional energy source, encompassing highly variable (10-70%) mole fractions of methane gas along with other higher hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon gases.The gas pressure at the source is typically low, posing technical constraints in the gas separation process.In particular, separation of methane gas from this source is a topic of wider scientific interest.The present study demonstrates the ability of hydrate-based technology in trapping methane gas, in nitrogen (N 2 ) + methane (CH 4 ) gas mixture, using tetrahydrofuran (THF)-based hydrate-forming system at lower operating pressures (1.0 MPa).It is observed that the gas trapping is efficient and rapid.All the experiments were conducted at non-stirred condition, which is technically easy to achieve.Mole fraction of CH 4 was increased in proportion with N 2 , and it was found that methane gas uptake capacity in hydrate cages, increased progressively with increasing CH 4 concentration.Gas uptake kinetics was also found to be extremely fast and 90% of the gas consumed in hydrates within 50-60 min from hydrate nucleation.

Explicating the amino acid effects for methane storage in hydrate form

Methane emissions increase day by day into the atmosphere and influence global temperatures. The necessity to capture these emissions at the source point is a primary concern. Several methods/techniques are being adopted to capture these emissions. The methane hydrates could be a viable method among them. The present study exposes various amino acids' effects in methane hydrate formation. The formation temperatures are around ∼268 to 273 K except for l-cys, which is about ∼277 K. The required subcooling for hydrates to trigger is high and is increasing in the order l-thr > l-met > l-phe > l-val > l-cys. The methane hydrate conversion is high in the presence of nearly all the amino acids with methane uptake capacity of ∼80-85%, except l-thr, for which it is only 30% of the total uptake capacity. The side chain of l-thr comprises the hydroxyl group, making it a polar and uncharged amino acid. It is ascertained that hydroxyl groups alone can form hydrogen bonds with water, increasing the hydrophilicity and solubility of molecules, causing lesser conversion in the l-thr system. Experimental investigations on tetrahydrofuran – methane – water system: Rapid methane gas storage in hydrates

This study reports methane (CH 4 ) gas storage capacity along with TetraHydroFuran (THF) as guest molecules in mixed hydrates. This process has been studied in two reactors of 100 and 400 mL capacity, having 4.5 and 7.5 cm internal diameter respectively, in non-stirred configuration. Experiments were conducted in each reactor at constant initial gas pressure (7.5 MPa) and by increasing the height of the solution from 1 to 8 cm, resulting in volume scale-up factor of 5. The total CH 4 gas uptake (moles) passes through a maximum at around 50% volume of the reactor indicating a transition from gas-rich to solution rich conditions. Observed variations in gas uptake are within ±20% of the maximum, upon different solution volume from 35% to 70% of reactor’s volume. Another set of experiments were conducted keeping the amount of the solution constant and increasing gas pressure in the range of 0.5–11.0 MPa. The gas uptake increased upon an increase in the gas pressure, but this is at least 40% less compared to the theoretical estimate. The stirring of solution or addition of promoter (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate, SDS) is also not effective in increasing the gas consumption. Kinetics of gas uptake, in both stirred and non-stirred conditions, are quicker and 90% of gas consumption occurs in an hour after the hydrate nucleation event.
