Synthesis and superconductivity in yttrium-cerium hydrides at high pressures

Abstract Further increasing the critical temperature and/or decreasing the stabilized pressure are the general hopes for the hydride superconductors. Inspired by the low stabilized pressure associated with Ce 4 f electrons in superconducting cerium superhydride and the high critical temperature in yttrium superhydride, we carry out seven independent runs to synthesize yttrium-cerium alloy hydrides. The synthetic process is examined by the Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction measurements. The superconductivity is obtained from the observed zero-resistance state with the detected onset critical temperatures in the range of 97-141 K. The upper critical field towards 0 K at pressure of 124 GPa is determined to be between 56 and 78 T by extrapolation of the results of the electrical transport measurements at applied magnetic fields. The analysis of the structural data and theoretical calculations suggest that the phase of Y 0.5 Ce 0.5 H 9 in hexagonal structure with the space group of P 6 3 / m m c is stable in the studied pressure range. These results indicate that alloying superhydrides indeed can maintain relatively high critical temperature at relatively modest pressures accessible by laboratory conditions.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a common malignant tumor with high heterogeneity and is mainly treated with chemoradiotherapy. It is important to predict the outcome of patients with advanced NPC after chemoradiotherapy to devise customized treatment strategies. Traditional MRI methods have limited predictive power, and better predictive models are needed.

Phonon Anharmonicity of Tungsten Disulfide

Recent studies demonstrate that 2H-WS2 is an excellent candidate for further applications in the electronics, spintronics, and optoelectronics. The details of phonon scattering processes associated with the thermal properties of a material are crucial for commercial applications. Here, we report an experimental study of the temperature-dependent Raman spectra of 2H-WS2 over a wide range from 3.6 to 850 K. The nonlinear temperature-dependent behavior corresponding to the phonon anharmonicity is estimated from both the frequency and linewidth of E2g2, E2g1, and A1g modes. It is found that the three-phonon process is dominant in the phonon softening and linewidth broadening in the whole temperature range. The four-phonon process can be detected and is even stronger than the three-phonon process at high temperatures. The obtained E2g1 mode is insensitive to the anharmonic effect, whereas the E2g2 mode is most sensitive. The phonon anharmonicity is suggested to mainly originate from the interaction between acoustic phonon and optical phonon. Understanding the phonon anharmonicity in 2H-WS2 is helpful for further applications of nanodevices.

Combined knockdown of CD151 and MMP9 may inhibit the malignant biological behaviours of triple-negative breast cancer through the GSK-3β/β-catenin-related pathway

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) represents a significant health concern for women worldwide, and the overproduction of MMP9 and CD151 is associated with various cancers, influencing tumour growth and progression. This study aimed to investigate how CD151 and MMP9 affect TNBC cell migration, apoptosis, proliferation, and invasion. Immunohistochemical experiments revealed that CD151 and MMP9 were positively expressed in triple-negative breast cancer, and lymph node metastasis, the histological grade, and CD151 and MMP9 expression were found to be independent prognostic factors for the survival of patients with triple-negative breast cancer. Cytological experiments indicated that the knockdown of CD151 or MMP9 slowed triple-negative breast cancer cell growth, migration, and invasion and increased the apoptosis rate. Compared with CD151 knockdown, double MMP9 and CD151 knockdown further promoted cell death and inhibited TNBC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Moreover, β-catenin and p-GSK-3β were significantly downregulated. In summary, simultaneously silencing CD151 and MMP9 further suppressed the proliferation, migration and invasion of TNBC cells and promoted their apoptosis. One possible strategy for inducing this effect is to block the GSK-3β/β-catenin pathway.

Lysosome Fe²⁺ release is responsible for etoposide‐ and cisplatin‐induced stemness of small cell lung cancer cells

Abstract Iron metabolism has been shown to hand over cancer stem cell, which is regarded as the root of tumor progression, recurrence and chemoresistance. This study aims to explore whether iron metabolism is involved in etoposide‐ and cisplatin‐induced stemness in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) cells. Here, analysis on tumor‐sphere formation and stemness marker expression is performed to determine whether etoposide and cisplatin can induce SCLC cell stemness. Online dataset analysis is constructed to determine the correlation between iron transportation and the survival of lung cancer patients. Chromatin immunoprecipitation combined with rescuing experiments are carried out to reveal the underlying mechanisms. Additionally, the non‐lethal doses of etoposide and cisplatin can induce SCLC cell stemness in a concentration‐dependent manner and reduce the lysosome iron concentration dependent on Ferritin expression, which is positively regulated by HIF‐1α/β. Moreover, HIF‐1α/β can directly bind to Ferritin promoter region. This HIF/Ferritin axis is responsible for etoposide‐ and cisplatin‐induced iron reduction in lysosomes and stemness of SCLC cells. This work demonstrates that iron in lysosomes is essential for etoposide and cisplatin‐induced stemness of SCLC cells, which is regulated by the HIF/Ferritin axis.

Valence fluctuation driven superconductivity in orthorhombic lead telluride

Chemical doping or elemental substitution and applying pressure are considered to be two effective tools to create superconductivity from a parent compound. The latter is more powerful than the former for contracting the lattice but does not bring about impurities, defects, or disorders compared with the former, thus serving as a good platform to examine or test any theoretical models for the born superconductivity. Among the various theories proposed for superconductivity, the electron-phonon interactions (or phonon mediated), spin fluctuations (or spin mediated), and valence fluctuations (or valence mediated) are the three major mechanisms. The first two have received extensive support from many elements and compounds over the last century, and only a few examples are believed to be a result of valence fluctuations. Lead telluride (PbTe), a Group IV-VI compound, is being examined as a promising candidate whose superconductivity is mediated by the valence fluctuations. The superconductivity has been reported in doped PbTe with the rocksalt NaCl structure at ambient pressure or parent PbTe with the body-centered cubic CsCl structure at high pressure. The pressure-driven intermediate orthorhombic phase in between has been known as a semiconductor with a large band gap and no expectation for the appearance of superconductivity. By doping I in the Te site to adding more carriers and partially substituting Pb by In with the expected valence change, however, we show that the co-doped PbTe exhibits superconductivity upon compression in the orthorhombic phase besides the expected one with the CsCl structure. Through the systematic studies of the structural, vibrational, electrical, and superconducting properties, we suggest that the observed superconductivity in the orthorhombic phase is mediated by the valence fluctuations associated with mixed valency on the In sites. This work thus not only offers an example for valence-mediated superconductivity but also fills the gap for the superconducting phase of PbTe in between the NaCl and CsCl structure.
