Role of Underutilized Fruits for Nutritive Value and Its Value-Added Products: A Review

Underutilized fruits are not commonly cultivated or traded on large scale grown in the mostly wild and consumed both locally and globally. It fruits are typically rich in essential carbohydrate, proteins, fats, fibres, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds, offering health benefits that can address global malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. Additionally, many underutilized fruits, such as Aonla, Karonda, Jamun, Ber, Bael, Wood apple, Phalsa and Lasoda provide dietary fiber, supporting digestive health and reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Beyond their nutritional benefits, underutilized fruits play a key role in sustainable agriculture. Furthermore, the processing of underutilized fruits into value-added products such as jam, jelly, preserve, candy, powder, wine, pickle, fruit bar, squash and nutraceuticals opens new economic opportunities. This transformation not only reduces post-harvest losses but also provides income for farmers, particularly in rural communities. With global market potential, these products can be marketed as functional foods, promoting health and sustainability. This review explores the diverse roles these fruits play in promoting human health, reduce malnutrition, environmental sustainability, and contribution in nation economically.

Two types of ginger rhizomes locally known as Pahari and Desi were subjected to physico-chemical analysis. Average rhizome weight was appreciably higher than Pahari ginger and it had greater content of flesh and juice. Juice obtained from Desi rhizomes possessed remarkably higher content of total carotenoids but it turned brown rapidly following the extraction.

Topographic distribution of retinal neovascularization in proliferative diabetic retinopathy using ultra-wide field angiography

To analyze the topographic distribution of neovascularization (NV) and capillary nonperfusion (CNP) using ultra-wide field fluorescein angiography (UWFFA) in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).This was a prospective, single-center, observational study in which all patients who presented between March 2019 and December 2020 and satisfied the inclusion criteria were recruited. In our study, patients with treatment-naïve PDR without any fibrovascular proliferation underwent UWFFA. The images were analyzed qualitatively for the topographic distribution of NV and the CNP area was quantified. The number of lesions picked by UWFFA was compared with 7 standard field (7SF) image using overlay of 7SF. The main outcome measure was characteristics of neovascularization, such as the number, location, and area of CNP, measured using UWFFA, which was considered with 95% confidence intervals (CI).Two hundred and fifty-three eyes of 187 patients with a mean age of 56.03 ± 8 years were included. Mean neovascularization elsewhere (NVE) was 2.91 ± 3.43. Maximum NVEs were seen in the superotemporal (ST; 0.9 ± 1.13) quadrant, followed by the inferotemporal (IT; 0.7 ± 1.08), inferonasal (IN; 0.66 ± 1.02) and superonasal (SN; 0.66 ± 1.01) quadrants. Maximum CNP area was seen in the SN (13.75 ± 8.83 disc diameter square [DD2]) quadrant, followed by the IN (13.48 ± 8.59 DD2), IT (11.34 ± 8.37 DD2), and ST (11.3 ± 8.34 DD2) quadrants. Mean CNP area was maximum in patients with only neovascularization of disc (NVD; 64.99 ± 41.47 DD2), followed by both NVD and NVE (61.37 ± 35.61 DD2), and was minimum in patients with only NVE (36.44 ± 22.03 DD2). Eighty-one (32%) eyes out of 253 had NVE and 189 (75%) out of 253 had CNP area outside 7SF (overlay) of Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS).Diabetic NV lesions and CNP areas are distributed asymmetrically throughout the retina and are not restricted to the posterior pole. Compared to conventional 7SF imaging, UWFFA reveals significantly more retinal vascular pathology in patients with PDR.

Cataract in retinopathy of prematurity – A review

Preterm babies with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) can become blind if they do not receive appropriate timely intervention. The presence of cataract in these individuals in addition to visual deprivation amblyopia, also delays proper screening, adequate treatment, and makes follow-up assessment difficult. Anatomical differences in these infants and amblyopia management, especially in unilateral cataract, are other important concerns, and hence, management of these cases with cataract and ROP is challenging. In this review, studies where ROP cases were associated with cataract, were evaluated with a focus on preterm individuals less than 6 months age. Preterm babies are at increased risk of developing cataract because of systemic factors. In addition, those with ROP may have cataract associated with retinal detachment or treatment received. The type of cataract, risk factors, and pathophysiology associated with each cause varies. This review highlights these different aspects of cataract in ROP including causes, pathophysiology, types of cataracts, and management. The management of these cases is critical in terms of the timing of cataract surgery and the challenges associated with surgery and posterior segment management for ROP. Anatomical differences, preoperative retina status, pupillary dilatation, neovascularization of iris in aggressive posterior ROP, fundus examination, amblyopia, and follow-up are various important aspects in the management of the same. The preoperative workup, intraoperative challenges, postoperative care, and rehabilitation in these individuals are discussed.

Effect of Biofertilizers on Nutrient Uptake by Green Gram [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] under Agri-horti System in Vindhyan Region of Eastern Uttar Pradesh

A field investigation was carried out in Factorial Randomized Block Design during autumn 2018 at agricultural farm, Rajiv Gandhi South Campus, Barkachha, Mirzapur (RGSC), Banaras Hindu University (U.P.) to investigate the impact of fertiliser and biofertilizer on the nutrient uptake by the green gram (V. radiata L.) plant and grain under guava (P. guvajava L.) trees. The twelve year old guava orchard was established in August 2006 with spacing of 7m x 7m. Seven fertilizer combination viz., control, Rhizobium culture, press mud, phosphorus solubilizing bacteria, Rhizobium culture + fertilizer, phosphorus solubilizing bacteria + fertilizer and press mud + fertilizer were applied. Among them application of press mud + fertilizer performed better by recording highest nitrogen content in grain (3.75), nitrogen content in grain (1.50), removal of nitrogen in grain (33.09) Removal of nitrogen in straw (33.03) and phosphorus content in grain (0.41) phosphorus content in straw (0.30), phosphorus uptake in grain (3.62), phosphorus uptake in straw (5.61), and found significantly superior to rest of the treatments.

GIST a rare abdominal tumor and our surgical experience

Background: GISTs are rare abdominal tumors, encountered as the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract leading to GI bleeding. We report a changing trend of diagnosis and management in Indian patients.Methods: The retrospective data was collected from medical records and 62 cases of GIST from 2003 to 2020 in General surgical unit of BHU. They were divided in three groups. In group A (36) patients only surgery, group B (14) patients surgery than adjuvant chemotherapy and in group C (12) who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy then surgery. Preoperatively, USG and CT scans of the abdomen were the main investigations, others being upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and chest x-ray confirm by histopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation.Results: The mean age at presentation was 42.8 years (range 17-74 years) and mean duration of symptoms was of 5 months (range 10 days-2 years). It was from the stomach, (06) duodenum (14) jejunum, (06) ileum, (1) caecum and (4) from the mesentery and (4) from retroperitoneum. 44 cases had low grade benign tumors and 18 malignancies. In group A, 22 (61%) patients showed recurrence in group B, 06, (42%) patients showed recurrence and group C, 02 (33%) patient showed recurrence.Conclusions: Most of the tumours were benign and surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment. However, the patients in which only surgery was done showed maximum recurrence and patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy then surgery followed adjuvant chemotherapy showed minimum recurrence.
