Phenomenon of multiple reentrant localization in a double-stranded helix with transverse electric field

Abstract The present work explores the potential for observing multiple reentrant localization behavior in a double-stranded helical (DSH) system, extending beyond the conventional nearest-neighbor hopping interaction. The DSH system is considered to have hopping dimerization in each strand while also being subjected to a transverse electric field. The inclusion of an electric field serves the dual purpose of inducing quasiperiodic disorder and strand-wise staggered site energies. Two reentrant localization regions are identified: one exhibiting true extended behavior in the thermodynamic limit, while the second region shows quasi-extended characteristics with partial spreading within the helix. The DSH system exhibits three distinct single-particle mobility edges linked to localization transitions present in the system. The analysis in this study involves examining various parameters such as the single-particle energy spectrum, inverse participation ratio, local probability amplitude, and more. Our proposal, combining achievable hopping dimerization and induced correlated disorder, presents a unique opportunity to study the phenomenon of reentrant localization, generating significant research interest.

Localization phenomena and electronic transport in irradiated Aubry–André–Harper systems

The role of light irradiation on electronic localization is critically investigated for the first time in a tight-binding lattice where site energies are modulated in the cosine form following the Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model. The critical point of transition from delocalized-to-localized phase can be monitored selectively by regulating the light parameters that is extremely useful to have controlled electron transmission across the system. Starting with a strictly one-dimensional (1D) AAH chain, we extend our analysis considering a two-stranded ladder model which brings peculiar signatures in presence of irradiation. Unlike 1D system, AAH ladder exhibits a mixed phase (MP) zone where both extended and localized energy eigenstates co-exist. This is the fundamental requirement to have mobility edge in energy band spectrum. A mathematical description is given for decoupling the irradiated ladder into two effective 1D AAH chains. The underlying mechanism of getting a MP zone relies on the availability of two distinct critical points (CPs) of the decoupled chains, in presence of second-neighbor hopping between the two strands. Using a minimal coupling scheme the effect of light irradiation is incorporated following the Floquet-Bloch ansatz. The localization behaviors of different energy eigenstates are studied by calculating inverse participation ratio, and, are further explained in a more compact way by calculating two-terminal transmission probabilities together with average density of states. Finally, the decoupling procedure is extended for a more general multi-stranded AAH ladders where multiple CPs and thus multiple mobility edges are found. Our analysis may provide a new route of engineering localization properties in similar kind of other fascinating quasiperiodic systems.

Non-volatile reconfigurable spin logic device: parallel operations

A new proposal is given for designing a non-volatile, completely spin logic device, that can be reprogrammed for different functional classical logical operations. We use the concept of bias driven spin dependent circular current and current induced magnetic field in a quantum ring under asymmetric ring-to-electrode interface configuration to implement all the Boolean operations. We extend our idea to build two kinds of parallel computing architectures for getting parallelized operations, all at a particular time. For one case, different kinds of parallel operations are performed in a single device, whereas in the other type all the possible inputs of a logic gate are processed in parallel and all the outputs are read simultaneously. The performance and reliability are investigated in terms of power, delay and power-delay-product and finally the system temperature. We find that both the individual and simultaneous logic operations studied here are much superior compared to the operations performed in different conventional logic families like complementary metal oxide semiconductor logic, transistor-transistor logic, etc. The key advantage is that we can perform several logic operations, as many as we wish, repeating the same or different logic gates using a single setup, which indeed reduces wiring in the circuits and hence consumes much less power. Our analysis can be utilized to design optimized logic circuits at nano-scale level.

Substituting fossil-based with bio-based chemicals: The case of limonene as a greener pore expander for micellar templated silica

Porous materials are widely used in applications such as adsorption, catalysis and separation. The use of expander molecules is a versatile route to enlarge the mesopore size in micellar templated mesoporous silica materials. Typical expanders used for this purpose are fossil-based organic molecules such as trimethylbenzene (TMB). In the course of making such syntheses greener and more sustainable, it is highly desirable to substitute such fossil-based chemicals with renewable ones. Here, we show that bio-based limonene can be used as an alternative expander molecule for the synthesis of large-pore templated silica. On the basis of electron microscopy, nitrogen physisorption and small angle X-ray scattering we show that the substitution of TMB by limonene leads to very similar material characteristics, reaching mean mesopore diameters of 17-19 nm. A comparative life-cycle assessment demonstrates the reduced environmental impact of limonene production from citrus peel waste compared to TMB production, supporting the call for more applications of renewable chemicals, ideally from waste-streams, also for the production of porous materials.

A Mesoscopic Ring as a NOT Gate: An Exact Result

We explore NOT gate response in a mesoscopic ring threaded by a magnetic flux φ.The ring is attached symmetrically to two semi-infinite one-dimensional metallic electrodes and a gate voltage, viz, V a , is applied in one arm of the ring which is treated as the input of the NOT gate.The calculations are based on the tight-binding model and the Green's function method, which numerically compute the conductance-energy and current-voltage characteristics as functions of the ring-to-electrodes coupling strength, magnetic flux and gate voltage.Our theoretical study shows that, for φ = φ 0 /2 (φ 0 = ch/e, the elementary flux-quantum) a high output current (1) (in the logical sense) appears if the input to the gate is low (0), while a low output current (0) appears when the input to the gate is high (1).It clearly exhibits the NOT gate behavior and this aspect may be utilized in designing an electronic logic gate.

Spin filtration in a single-stranded antiferromagnetic helix with slowly varying disorder: Higher order electron hopping

This work explores spin filtration in a helical magnetic system within a tight-binding framework, where neighboring magnetic moments are aligned antiparallel. The helix experiences a slowly-varying diagonal disorder, following a cosine form, which creates a finite energy mismatch between up and down spin channels. Unlike earlier studies that relied on external electric fields, this investigation demonstrates that disorder alone can achieve high spin filtration, even at low bias and high temperatures. Higher-order electron hopping in the helix leads to a non-uniform energy level distribution, facilitating favorable spin filtration, sometimes reaching $100\%$. The interplay between higher-order hopping and atypical disorder may enable selective spin transmission through various antiferromagnetic helices, potentially opening new avenues for functional elements.
