Agromining: Farming for Metals in the Future?

Phytomining technology employs hyperaccumulator plants to take up metal in harvestable plant biomass. Harvesting, drying and incineration of the biomass generates a high-grade bio-ore. We propose that "agromining" (a variant of phytomining) could provide local communities with an alternative type of agriculture on degraded lands; farming not for food crops, but for metals such as nickel (Ni). However, two decades after its inception and numerous successful experiments, commercial phytomining has not yet become a reality. To build the case for the minerals industry, a large-scale demonstration is needed to identify operational risks and provide "real-life" evidence for profitability.

Response of Four Turfgrass Cultivars to Limestone and Biosolids‐Compost Amendment of a Zinc and Cadmium Contaminated Soil at Palmerton, Pennsylvania

Abstract Revegetation treatments (NPK fertilizer, limestone plus NPK fertilizer, or composted iron‐rich limed biosolids) were evaluated on severely Zn phytotoxic soils near a former smelter. Soils contained 15 500 mg Zn and 158 mg Cd kg −1 and initial soil pH was 6.0. Zinc‐resistant ‘Merlin’ red fescue ( Festuca rubra L.) was compared with ‘Bonanza’ and ‘Kentucky‐31’ tall fescue ( Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and ‘Touchdown’ Kentucky bluegrass ( Poa pratensis L.) for leaf phytotoxicity symptoms, rapidity of achieving cover, persistence of cover, and metal accumulation. Biosolids compost more strongly reduced soluble Zn and Cd, resulting in effective remediation of Zn phytotoxicity that persisted for the 4 yr of this test. ‘Merlin’ red fescue showed remarkable exclusion of Zn and Cd (201–446 mg kg −1 Zn and 0.9–2.7 mg kg −1 Cd in dry shoots from treated plots) but grew slowly and made poor lawns. ‘Kentucky‐31’ tall fescue plants grew rapidly and reached almost 100% cover within 3 mo in compost treatment plots, but the Zn exceeded phytotoxic threshold levels (>500 mg Zn kg −1 ). ‘Bonanza’ tall fescue and ‘Touchdown’ Kentucky bluegrass had good growth performance and contained lower concentrations of Zn and Cd than ‘Kentucky‐31’ tall fescue on biosolids‐compost amended treatments and were more suitable as a lawn and/or revegetation crop. After the first year of the study, the commercial turfgrasses survived only on the biosolids‐compost plots. The combination of calcareous soil pH and higher organic matter, Fe, and phosphate levels of biosolids‐compost amended plots improved the overall success of vegetation establishment and allowed important turfgrasses to revegetate highly Zn‐contaminated soils.

Determination of total cadmium in calcareous soils by extraction using aliquat‐336 and 3‐heptan‐one after aqua regia digestion

Abstract Measurement of total soil cadmium (Cd) is difficult due to calcium (Ca) and other chemicals which cause high background absorbance when trace levels of Cd are to be determined. When soil Cd is low, even use of deuterium background correction with flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) cannot provide accurate Cd results. Use of furnace atomic absorption with method of standard additions can circumvent these interferences, but the cost and time required are substantial. We desired a more rapid, convenient, and reliable alternative to extraction using dithizone and back‐extraction into acid, or to ammonium pyrollidinedithiocarbamate (APDC) which does not require close pH adjustment nor have many sources of potantial contamination. We evaluated analysis of these complex soil extracts with the method of Viets (1978) which extracts metals from 1N acid solutions using Aliquat‐336 in methylisobutyl‐ketone (MIBK). We tested the use of the less toxic and less water soluble 3‐heptanone as an organic solvent alternative to MIBK which can be directly analyzed by flame atomic absorption. A series of extraction experiments were conducted to determine if Cd was extracted from standard solutions and from total metal digests of calcareous soils into an Aliquat‐336/3‐heptanone solution, and under what conditions extraction was optimum. In the optimum method, Cd was extracted from aqua regia soil digests by 10% Aliquat‐336 in 3‐heptanone without addition of ascorbic acid or potassium iodide (KI) used by Viets. Excellent recovery of Cd was obtained for both standard reference soils and low Cd highly calcareous soils from North Dakota and Minnesota. Addition of ascorbic acid and KI did not increase the efficiency of extraction indicating that the extraction system used was free of ferric‐iron [Fe(III)] interference. The ion‐association complex of Cd remained stable for at least 24 hr after extraction, providing a very convenient method to analyze low levels of total Cd in soils and other geologic materials.

Differential Cultivar Tolerance in Soybean to Phytotoxic Levels of Soil Zn. I. Range of Cultivar Response¹

Abstract Heavy metals in waste materials added to agricultural soils can severely inhibit subsequent crop growth. This study was conducted to evaluate the variation in tolerance among cultivars of an agriculturally important plant species to phytotoxic levels of added soil Zn. Twenty soybean ( Glycine max L. Merr.) cultivars were screened, through greenhouse pot studies, for their growth response to Zn at pH 5.5 and 6.5 on a Sassafras sandy loam (Fragiudult) amended with 1.31 (control), 131, and 262 ppm Zn. Significant differential responses were found, and the cultivars were grouped into several tolerance and uptake classes, based on the results of the pH 6.5, 262‐ppm Zn treatment: tolerant (9 to 18% leaf dry weight yield reduction [YR], 5 cultivars), normal (20 to 32% YR, 12 cultivars), sensitive (33 to 48% YR, 3 cultivars); accumulator (696 to 730 ppm trifoliolate leaf Zn, 5 cultivars), normal (549 to 675 ppm Zn, 11 cultivars), and excluder (389 to 540 ppm Zn, 4 cultivars). Soil Zn additions significantly increased root and foliar Mn contents to reported phytotoxic levels at both pH 5.5 and 6.5, but did not influence DTPA‐TEA extractable soil Mn. Significant cultivar differences in root and leaf Mn contents were observed. The results of this work illustrate the importance of cultivar selection, not only for field planting of Zn‐enriched soils, but also for its influence on experimental results.

Use of Aluminum‐ and Iron‐Rich Residues to Immobilize Phosphorus in Poultry Litter and Litter‐Amended Soils

Abstract Poultry production is concentrated on Maryland's eastern shore on areas with sandy soils low in sesquioxides. Water quality has been affected by runoff and leaching of phosphorus from poultry litter‐amended fields. Phosphorus movement is of major concern because P is a limiting nutrient for eutrophication in surface water. The objectives of this study were to (i) evaluate the ability of Al‐rich drinking water treatment residue (DWTR) and iron‐rich residue (IRR) to reduce water‐soluble P and Bray and Kurtz no. 1‐extractable phosphorus (BK‐1 P) in poultry litter and three long‐term litter‐amended soils and (ii) determine the effects of these residues on pH and electrical conductivity (EC) in the amended litter and soils. Poultry litter and soils were treated with four rates of DWTR and IRR and incubated for 7 wk at 25°C. Litter and soils were sampled at 2, 4, and 7 wk. Both residue materials increased the pH of the litter and the soils. The DWTR was more effective in reducing both water‐soluble P and BK‐1 P in litter at all rates. At the 25 and 50 g kg −1 rates, reductions in water‐soluble P with IRR were comparable with that of DWTR, but DWTR was twice as effective as IRR in reducing BK‐1 P concentration. The results showed that water‐soluble P and BK‐1 P in poultry litter and long‐term litter‐amended soils can be substantially reduced by incorporating residues rich in Al and Fe; these residues may be useful for reducing P runoff and leaching from poultry litter and litter‐amended fields.

Towards Practical Cadmium Phytoextraction with Noccaea Caerulescens

A series of field trials were conducted to investigate the potential of Noccaea caerulescens F.K. Mey [syn. Thlaspi caerulescens J &C Presl. (see Koch and Al-Shehbaz 2004)] populations (genotypes) derived from southern France to phytoextract localized Cd/Zn contamination in Thailand. Soil treatments included pH variation and fertilization level and application of fungicide. N. caerulescens populations were transplanted to the field plots three months after germination and harvested in May, prior to the onset of seasonal rains. During this period growth was rapid with shoot biomass ranging from 0.93-2.2 g plant(-1) (280-650 kg ha(-1)) DW. Shoot Cd and Zn concentrations for the four populations evaluated ranged from 460-600 and 2600-2900 mg kg(-1) DW respectively. Cadmium and Zn Translocation Factors (shoot/root) for the populations tested ranged from 0.91-1.0 and 1.7-2.1 and Bioaccumulation Factors ranged from 12-15 and 1.2-1.3. We conclude that optimizing the use of fungicidal sprays, acidic soil pH, planting density and increasing the effective cropping period will increase rates of Cd and Zn removal enough to facilitate practical Cd phytoextraction from rice paddy soils in Thailand.
