Novel hydrolysable azo disperse dyes based on N‐ester‐1,8‐naphthalimide: dyeing of polyester–cotton blends

The dyeing of polyester–cotton blends with new alkali‐hydrolysable azo disperse dyes based on N ‐ester‐1,8‐naphthalimide was investigated. Polyester–cotton blend fabrics were dyed using both one‐ and two‐bath methods. Dyes 3 and 4 offered lower colour yield on polyester using the one‐bath method. For the rest of the dyes, employing either the one‐ or two‐bath method resulted in a similar colour yield on polyester fabric. The results for fastness properties and colour yield of the dyeings showed that the dyes were suitable for dyeing polyester–cotton blends using the one‐bath method. The kinetic study of hydrolysis of the dyes in alkali media obeyed the pseudo first‐order reaction rate.

Acid azo dyes for efficient molecular photovoltaic: study of dye-sensitized solar cells performance

In this paper we sensitized three free-metal azo days Dye 1, Dye 2 and Dye 3 based on 1,8-naphthalimide with n-propyl as the electron donor group. We used sulfonic acid and hydroxyl substituents as the electron acceptor anchoring group in synthesized dyes. The proposed dyes were sensitized from acenaphthene as the starting material by standard reactions and characterized by different techniques such as melting point, FTIR, 1HNMR, elemental analysis and UV-Visible spectroscopy after purification. Spectrophotometric measurements of the azo dyes in solution and on a TiO2 substrate were carried out in order to assess changes in the status of the dyes. The wavelength of maximum absorption for Dye 1, Dye 2 and Dye 3 in solution are 530 nm, 568 nm and 550 nm and on TiO2 films are 552 nm, 591 nm and 575 nm, respectively. Finally, the proposed dyes used as sensitizer in a dye solar cell structure and their photovoltaic properties investigated. The Conversion efficiency for Dye 1, Dye 2 and Dye 3 are 2.11 and 2.32 and 2.17, respectively.

Investigation of photovoltaic properties of nanostructure indoline dye-sensitised solar cells using changes in assembling materials

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study assembling parameters in dye-sensitised solar cells (DSSCs) performance. For this end, 3a,7a-dihydroxy-5ß-cholanic acid (cheno) are selected as anti-aggregation agent and two solutions, namely, tetrabutyl ammonium iodide and (PMII)IL used as electrolyte. Design/methodology/approach A series of organic dyes were selected using N-substituents carbazole as electron donor group and acrylic acid and cyanoacrylic acid as electron acceptor groups. Absorption properties of purified dyes were studied in solution and on photoelectrode substrate. DSSCs were prepared in the presence of anti-aggregation agent and different electrolyte to determine the photovoltaic performance of each dyes. Findings The results showed that all organic dyes form J-aggregation on the photoanode substrate in the absence of anti-aggregation agent and the amounts of aggregation were reduced in the presence of anti-aggregation agent. DSSCs were fabricated in the presence of anti-aggregation agent. The photovoltaic properties were improved using tetrabutyl ammonium iodide as electrolyte. The maximum power conversion efficiency was achieved for D12 in the presence of cheno and tetrabutyl ammonium iodide as anti-aggregation agent and electrolyte, respectively. Social implications Organic dye attracts more and more attention due to low cost, facile route synthesis and less hazardous. Originality/value The effect of anti-aggregation agent and electrolyte on DSSCs performance was investigated for the first time.

Novel self-coloured polymers based on new fluorescent naphthalimide derivatives: synthesis, characterisation and photophysical properties

Purpose In this study, two novel fluorescent dyes, based on naphthalimide derivatives have been synthesised from acenaphthene as a starting material. The ability of the dyes to graft to polymer chain was then demonstrated. The novel synthesised dyes and self-coloured polymers were characterised by a variety of techniques. Design/methodology/approach The novel dyes were prepared through by halogenation, oxidation, imidation and amination reactions. All steps of these processes were monitored by thin layer chromatography. The fluorescent dyes and their intermediates were characterised by differential scanning calorimeter, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H-NMR) and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13-CNMR) spectroscopic techniques. The molar extinction coefficients and absorption maximum wavelength were obtained by examining the dyes and polymer solutions in Dimethylformamide (DMF) and toluene solvents. The fluorescency of novel dyes and self-coloured polymers was evaluated. Their quantum yields and Stokes shift values were determined as DMF and toluene solutions. The percentage of the covalently bounded dyes into the polymer chain was calculated. Findings The characterisation of the synthesised dyes and self-coloured polymers verified their structural correctness. The results of reaction dyes with resin demonstrated that the dyes were covalently bonded to the chain of an acrylic polymer (resin) containing carboxylic acid groups giving self-coloured polymers. The extent of fluorescence of the synthesised dyes and their polymers showed that compounds containing functional amino group in C-4 position of naphthalimide ring have high fluorescence properties. Originality/value This study is original. Self-coloured polymers based on acrylic were synthesised by novel naphthalimide dyes with acrylic resin for the first time, successfully. The novel dyes and their self-coloured polymers exhibit good and acceptable fluorescent activity.

Exploring solvatochromism: a comprehensive analysis of research data of the solvent -solute interactions of 4-nitro-2-cyano-azo benzene-meta toluidine

This study investigates the solvatochromic behavior of a new D1 disperse dye, focusing on the 4-nitro-2-cyano-azo-Benzene-metaToluidine type. Using UV-visible spectroscopy, we analyze the dye's performance in single solvents and binary mixtures. Our analysis includes the evaluation of solvent polarity parameters and dye structure parameters, with emphasis on the longest wavelength intramolecular charge transfer absorption band. We identify nonlinear and linear patterns in the electronic transition energies plots with respect to solvent composition. Statistical analysis considers correlation coefficients, root mean squared error, mean absolute percentage error, and other parameters, providing insights into data accuracy and precision. This experimental and statistical study explores the absorption spectrum, wavelength characteristics, absorption energy, and polarity of a novel azo dye across various solvent and solute environments. These findings contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the dye's photophysical and photochemical properties, potentially enabling applications in optical sensors and advanced materials.

Study of the Influence of Gemini Cationic Surfactants on the Dyeing and Fastness Properties of Polyester Fabrics Using Naphthalimide Dyes

Abstract In this paper, the dyeing and fastness properties of three monoazo naphthalimide dyes including different imide groups (dye 1: ethyl amine, dye 2: ethyl glycinate and dye 3: glycine) on a polyester fabric were investigated in the presence of two gemini cationic surfactants (symbolized as 12‐4‐12 or 14‐4‐14) and a conventional single chain surfactant, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). The color strength ( K/S ) of naphthalimide dyes on polyester fabric was measured through the reflectance spectrophotometric method, and the values obtained in the presence of different cationic surfactants increased in the order of dye 3 < dye 2 < dye 1. Although the K/S values indicated that the gemini cationic surfactants had almost no effect on the dyeing behavior of dye 1, but they were effective in dyeing ability of dye 2 and dye 3. The data for dye 2 demonstrated that build up of polyester fabrics in the presence of gemini surfactants are more than the conventional cationic surfactant, and also K/S values of dye 3 on polyester fabrics were in the order: DTAB > 12‐4‐12 > 14‐4‐14. It was found that the washing and rubbing fastness properties improved with increasing the concentration of surfactants. In addition, the sublimation fastness of dye 3 was more than the other dyes owing to the presence of a polar group in its chemical structure, and the light fastness of naphthalimide dyes on polyester fabrics was generally moderate.
