Abstract Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common demyelinating autoimmune diseases that affects the central nervous system and is characterized by major immune-mediated myelin and axonal damage or axonal loss explicable to the absence of myelin sheaths. Here we present the early findings of the gene expression study of meylinogenesis-related genes of MS rat models which were treated with a novel protocol of taper up-off of opium tincture. The study included normal Lewis rats, MS rat models by induction of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) without treatment, and MS rat models with a novel protocol of taper up-off treatment of opium tincture called Dezhakam-step-time (DST) in different dosages. RNA was extracted and cDNA was synthesized from the spinal cord tissue. Gene expression analysis was conducted for eight genes as markers of myelinogenesis ( OLIG1 , OLIG2 , MBP , MYRF , PLP1 , PMP22 , EGF , and UGT8 ) using the Real time PCR. All eight genes were down-regulated in EAE models vs. healthy controls and all eight genes were up-regulated after the taper up-off treatment of opium tincture. The most over-expression of myelinogenesis-related genes was revealed at higher dosages of opium tincture. These are the early results of a gene expression study in a multiple sclerosis model treated with opium tincture. It seems that the opium tincture method may induce the activation of myelinogenesis in EAE models which could lead to a potential treatment for improvement of neural dysfunctions in MS patients.
Methamphetamine is a neurotoxic drug and highly addictive stimulant, which causes a significant psychological dependence in use disorder and potential brain damage even in the first use disorder. Despite decades of research, no approved pharmacotherapy is available for methamphetamine (METH) use disorder, and behavioral therapies are faced with a great lack of long-term recovery and a high rate of relapse. Opium tincture is air-dried Papaver somniferum latex, formulated for oral administration. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the new protocol for taper up-off method of opium tincture used for treatment of methamphetamine addiction in Iran, for more than 10 years. In the present study, the effectiveness of the Opium tincture taper-up-off treatment method for methamphetamine dependence called “Dezhakam step time (DST) for methamphetamine” was assessed. We used data collected via the “Congress 60” a nongovernmental organization in Iran, dedicated to addiction treatment with the DST method, from Jan 2018 until December 2020. We evaluated the treatment safety, success, and relapse rate in methamphetamine dependents treated in the “Congress 60” organization with the DST for methamphetamine method. All subjects were tested using Urine drug monitoring for both opioid and methamphetamine use after the treatment period and during the next two years as a follow-up. Findings revealed 89 percent of successful treatments for methamphetamine dependence and only 11 percent of substance abuse relapses in two years follow up. Also, less than one percent of the subjects that finished the treatment program abused opioids in two years follow up. Findings suggest the safety and effectiveness of the Opium tincture taper-up-off method in the treatment of methamphetamine dependence. The findings of the study may help to a better understanding of a safe potential novel method for methamphetamine dependence treatment and its effects on psychological dependence on psychostimulants.
Abstract Opium is the dried latex obtained from the opium poppy. Opium addiction is the most prevalent addiction in Iranian society. During the last two decades "congress 60" a nongovernmental organization, has been performed a taper off treatment of opium associated with a package of psychological treatment group classes. Present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of taper off method in opium addiction in Iran, during more than 20 years as well as the effects of the treatment method on addiction associated cognitive dysfunctions. In present study the taper off treatment method of opium addiction called Dezhakam step time (DST) were assessed. We used data collected via the congress 60 non-governmental organization in Iran dedicated to addiction treatment with DST method, since Jan 2018 until December 2020. In addition, executive functions including memory and decision making were analyzed in a large sample size from addicted subjects which were successfully treated with DST method in Congress 60. Results showed high number of successful treatment of opium addiction and very low number of substance abuse relapse. Also, significant improvements in memory and decision making were determined in addicts after therapy and these improvements were correlated with duration of individuals' membership in congress 60. Findings revealed the effectiveness of taper off method in treatment of opium addiction as well as improvement in cognitive functions in opium dependent persons. Findings of the study may help to a better understanding from a novel method of opium addiction treatment called DST and its effects on neuropsychological mechanisms and brain functions of opium dependents.
Abstract The Human papilloma virus (HPV) with almost 1% of prevalence in sexually active adults has more than thirty-five (HPV) types, that can infect the genital tract in women and cause a visible genital HPV infection and genital warts that reveal on the cervix, vagina, urethra, anus, and surrounding areas are mostly caused by HPV genotypes 6, 11 and 18. Moreover, the oncogenic HPV types including 16,18,31,33 and 35 are detected in most of the genital warts and are significantly associated with intraepithelial neoplasia of vulval (VIN), cervical (CIN), and anal (AIN). About fifty percent of the infected group have a subclinical or latent infection. Some of the HPV types can cause cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. The most common treatment methods for removal of the HPV-induced vaginal warts are including cryotherapy, electrocautery, laser therapy, surgery, or trichloroacetic acid. In the present case report the treatment of a 41 years old woman with HPV infection and HPV-induced vaginal warts using an Iranian specially formulated apple-based sap called Dezhakam sap (D.SAP) has been presented. Results showed the disappearance of warts on the vaginal area, and replacement with normal tissue after three months of treatment. D.SAP is an antioxidant and probiotic-rich compound that could help the immune system fight against HPV infections and may present as a potential complementary therapy for HPV-induced warts.
