From observations of interstellar optical absorption lines of CN, CH, and C${\mathrm{H}}^{+}$ we are able to impose upper limits, at three wavelengths, on the intensity of background radiation in the interstellar medium. These limits are consistent with the existence of thermal background radiation at a temperature of \ensuremath{\sim}3\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K, but can be reconciled with the results of a recent rocket observation by Shivanandan, Houck, and Harwit only if the intense flux which they report is concentrated into a sharp line which happens to avoid the molecular resonances, or if this flux is of local origin.

Effects of end cell ion cyclotron fluctuations on central-cell ion confinement in the tandem mirror experiment (TMX)

The tandem mirror device (TMX) exhibits gross stability to both MHD and microinstability modes. The end-cell plasmas provide the tandem with average minimum-B stability, while the efflux of plasma from the central cell maintains the end cells (plugs) at marginal stability to loss cone modes. For some operating conditions, a residual level of plug ion cyclotron fluctuations is detected. These oscillations dominate the fluctuation frequency spectra in both the plugs and the central cell. The presence of plug ion cyclotron fluctuations in the central cell leads to resonance heating of some of the central cell ions. This heating degrades the confinement of the central cell ions; thereby increasing the amount of warm plasma stream flowing through the plugs.

Experimental Limitations to the Validity of Semiclassical Radiation Theories

The polarization correlation of photons emitted in an atomic cascade is treated in the framework of a general semiclassical radiation theory. The resulting predictions are contrasted with those of orthodox quantum-radiation theory. Experimental evidence is discussed which is in agreement with the latter theory, but excludes semiclassical theories in general.

A neutral-beam-sustained plasma in the $2XIIB$ mirror machine is stabilized by hydrogen gas ionized at one mirror. Peak plasma energy densities that exceed the energy density of the vacuum field ($\stackrel{^}{\ensuremath{\beta}}\ensuremath{\equiv}\frac{8{\stackrel{^}{n}}_{\mathrm{D}}{\overline{E}}_{\mathrm{D}}}{B_{\mathrm{vac}}^{2}}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}1$) are achieved with deuterons of average energy ${\overline{E}}_{\mathrm{D}}\ensuremath{\approx}9$ keV, peak density ${\stackrel{^}{n}}_{\mathrm{D}}\ensuremath{\approx}1.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{14}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$, in a magnetic field ${B}_{\mathrm{vac}}=0.56$ T. These high $\ensuremath{\beta}'\mathrm{s}$ are sustained for the duration of gas and neutral-beam injection, with no evidence of a $\ensuremath{\beta}$ limit.

Thermal barrier confinement experiments in the TMX-U tandem mirror

In our recent experiments on the TMX-U thermal-barrier device, we achieved the end plugging of axial ion losses up to a central cell density of n/sub c/ = 6 x 10/sup 12/ cm/sup -3/. During lower density experiments, we measured the axial potential profile characteristic of a thermal barrier and found an ion-confining potential greater than 1.5 kV and a potential depression of 0.45 kV in the barrier region. The average beta of hot end plug electrons has reached 15% and of hot central cell ions has reached 6%. In addition, we heated deuterium ions in the central cell with ICRF to an average perpendicular energy of 2 keV. During strong end plugging at low density (7 x 10/sup 11/ cm/sup -3/), the axial ion confinement time tau/sub parallel/ reached 50 to 100 ms while the nonambipolar radial ion confinement time tau/sub perpendicular/ was 14 ms - independent of end plugging. Electrically floating end walls increased the radial ion confinement time by a factor of 1.8. At higher densities and lower potentials, tau/sub parallel/ was 6 to 12 ms and tau/sub perpendicular/ exceeded 100 ms.

Commercialization of atom interferometers for borehole gravity gradiometry. Quarterly report, April--June 1993

Results are presented for the following tasks completed this quarter: study the influence of vibrations of the logging tool itself; compile a list of borehole imposed constraints and tradeoffs for the design of a gadiometer; and formulate the requirements for a magnet system and determine the feasibility for use of a combination of permanent magnets and electromagnets to produce the necessary fields.
