Direct observation of the reciprocity between spin current and phonon interconversion

Spin current has emerged as a leading candidate for manipulation of spins in a nano-magnet. We here experimentally show another utility of spin current, viz., it can be used for the generation of phonons. Within the same experimental setup, we also demonstrate the inverse effect of generation of spin current by phonons. To demonstrate these effects, we measured the scattering-matrix of a two-port device with interdigital transducers as one port and an array of Ni/Pt lines as a second port made on a piezoelectric substrate. The off-diagonal elements which correspond to transmission between the ports were found to have 180° relative phase shift. The transmission of electrical signals from port 2 to 1 corresponds to the generation of phonons from spin-current, while transmission from port 1 to 2 corresponds to the inverse effect. These results could be useful for designing spin-current based gyrators. We further show the reciprocity between spin transfer torque and spin pumping effects.

Relativistic interaction between an electron's spin and orbital angular momentum has provided an efficient mechanism to control the magnetization of nanomagnets. Extensive research has been done to understand and to improve spin-orbit-interaction-driven torques generated by nonmagnets by applying electric current. In this work, we show that heat current in a nonmagnet can also couple to its spin-orbit interaction to produce torque on the adjacent ferromagnet. Hence, this work provides a platform to study spin-orbito-caloritronic effects in heavy metal/ferromagnet bilayers.

Generation of charge current from magnetization oscillation via the inverse of voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy effect

It is well known that oscillating magnetization induces charge current in a circuit via Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. New physical phenomena by which magnetization dynamics can produce charge current have gained considerable interest recently. For example, moving magnetization textures, such as domain walls, generates charge current through the spin-motive force. Here, we examine an entirely different effect, which couples magnetization and electric field at the interface between an ultrathin metallic ferromagnet and dielectric. We show that this coupling can convert magnetic energy into electrical energy. This phenomenon is the Onsager reciprocal of the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy effect. The effect provides a previously unexplored probe to measure the magnetization dynamics of nanomagnets.

Spin current can be used to control the magnetization dynamics of a nano-magnet. There are various ways to generate spin current. Electrical current or heat current passing through a ferromagnet can generate spin current due to the spin dependent conductivity or spin-dependent Seebeck effect. Electrical current passing through a non-magnetic material with high spin-orbit coupling can generate spin current via the spin-Hall effect. Heat current passing through a non-magnet can also generate spin current due the spin-orbit coupling. This effect known as the spin-Nernst effect (SNE), has been shown recently by measuring thermally driven spin-Hall magneto-resistance [1-3]. We have shown that the spin-Nernst effect can be measured directly via a multi-terminal device with ferromagnetic Ni contacts on Pt [4]. We generated heat current in the Pt and the resultant spin current was then detected by Ni contacts. The same multi-terminal device was used to measure the spin-Hall angle for comparison with spin-Nernst angle. In a further work, we have shown that the spin current generated via spin-Nernst effect can be injected into an adjacent FM layer to exert spin-transfer torque (spin-Nernst torque) [5].
