Historical evidence suggests that in ancient India, in the Hindu pantheon, the natural environment was considered a creation of Lord Brahma, the Supreme Creator and a member of the Holy Trinity – Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver and Shiva the annihilator. The various components of our ecosystem, in their myriad transformations from birth to death mirror the cosmic cycle of creation and destruction. Whenever we humans manufacture any product or commodity we are not actually ‘creating’ it, we are merely transforming nature from one form to another. Thus, nature is constant and eternal, it is the subcomponents of nature that are born and die. This natural cycle of life and death is imprinted on every Indian’s psyche. According to our scriptures this cycle is ceaseless, perpetual, without end.

Thermal budget consideration in rapid isothermal processing

Rapid isothermal processing (RIP) based on incoherent radiation as the source of thermal and optical energy is emerging as a key low-thermal budget processing technique. Because of high heating and cooling rates, the RIP cycle generally refers to processing time and temperature. In this letter, we have shown that the properties of materials and devices fabricated by RIP depends on the heating and cooling rates. Optimized heating and cooling rates can minimize unwanted phenomena (e.g., higher thermal stress, warpage, etc.) leading to the improved performance of the devices fabricated by RIP. To demonstrate this significance of heating and cooling rates, we report the wafer dimensional analysis results for ramp rates of 15, 75, 100, 150, and 200 °C per second at a maximum steady-state temperature of 1050 °C. Plasma and low-pressure chemical vapor deposition silicon nitride films on 6-in. wafers were studied for warpage. The BF2 and As implanted wafers at a fixed dose of 8×1015/cm2 were studied for slow (15 °C per second) and fast (200 °C per second) ramp rates. We also present stress, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, and diode leakage current results for different RIP cycles of interest.

Measurement of acoustic intensity in the presence of one-dimensional fluid flow

This paper presents the results of an analytical and experimental investigation of the measurement of acoustic intensity in the presence of mean fluid flow. The investigation was necessitated by the fact that an acoustic intensity measurement technique with mean fluid flow is not available. Munro and Ingard [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 65, 1402–1406 (1979)] have developed a formulation for this problem; but no experimental data or verification is given. In this paper, two independent formulations for acoustic intensity in a duct with mean fluid flow using the two-microphone cross-spectral density method are developed. In order to evaluate and compare our formulations with the Munro and Ingard expression, we have conducted an experiment for the case of one-dimensional, irrotational, isentropic mean flow in a duct over 0–0.15 Mach range and for frequencies from 300 to 800 Hz. All these formulations yield similar values for acoustic intensity, within experimental errors. Although it is still premature to draw definite conclusions regarding the significance of additive terms to the nonflow acoustic intensity, some insight based on our preliminary experimental results has been gained.

Synthesis of Bis(Alkyltelluro)Methanes and their Complexation with Cadmium(II)

Abstract A novel and convenient route for the synthesis of a series of bis(alkyltelluro)methanes (alkyl─ethyl, isopropyl, n-butyl and n-hexyl) is described by one pot methylene insertion reaction using dialkyl ditellurides, sodium borohydride and chloroform. The cadmium(II) complexes of bis(isopropyltelluro)methane were also synthesized. The bis(alkyltelluro)meth-anes were characterized by elemental analysis, 1H and 125Te NMR. The product of the complexation of bis(isopropyl telluro)methane with Cd(II) have been characterized by elemental analysis, 1H, TGA and FAB mass spectrometry. The dialkyltelluroether ligands may be useful in organic synthesis and their complexes with cadmium(II) can be considered a potential single source of metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) precursors for advanced electronic materials.

Photogrammetry for mining studies

Photogrammetry is the science, art and technology of making precise measurements on photographs to obtain geometrical dimension and other properties of on object. Its two main branches are aerial and terrestrial photogrammetry. Close rang photogrammetry is the special case of photgrammetry when camera object distance is less than 300 metres. The aim of this paper is to compile the use of photogrammetry in different fields of mining engineering like slope monitoring, open pit surveying measurement of geolginal discontinutities, and deformation monitoring. The technique is in use at the Central mining Research Station, Dhanbad for the analysis of equivalent material mine model. A brief resume of the work done is included in the end

Inclined slicing of a thick coal seam in ascending order: A case study

This paper deals with the stability investigations carried out at the XIVth seam of Jitpur colliery. The study was conducted to investigate the possible causes of roof cavity formation and face spalling at the middle slice face of block-3 longwall panel and to suggest remedial measures. The instrumentation and monitoring work was carried out in the panel over a period of nine months. On the basis of observations, it was found that if the maximum face span was reduced from the existing 4.8 m to 3.6 m, and if the face time schedule cycle was reduced from a maximum of 37 days to about 18 days, this problem could be eliminated. The recommendations of CMRI have been implemented in the middle slice face of block-4 panel with success.
