Productivity of fodder oat (Avena sativa) under different sowing times, fertility levels and cutting management in temperate environment

In Jammu and Kashmir there is acute shortage of fodder for livestock husbandry particularly during winter. To improve the productivity of animals availability of adequate quantity of nutritive fodder is a prerequisite. An experiment was conducted during the winter (rabi) seasons of 2009–10 and 2011–12 at Srinagar on silty clay loam soil, to study the effect of different sowing times, fertility levels and cutting management on fodder production potential of oat (Avena sativa L.). The treatments consisted of 3 sowing dates, viz. 20 September, 30 September and 10 October; 3 fertility levels, viz. 150 kg N + 30.8 kg P + 33.3 kg K, 125 kg N + 26.4 kg P + 24.9 kg K and 100 kg N + 22 kg P + 16.6 kg K/ha; and 2 cutting management, viz. single cut at 50% flowering and double cut on 15 December and 50% flowering stage. Highest green fodder (37.3 t/ha) and dry-fodder yield (10.2 t/ha) were recorded with 30 September sown crop, which was at par with crop sown on 20 September. Net returns ( 33,858/ha) and benefit: cost ratio (1.96) were higher with crop sown on 30 September. Application of 150 kg N + 30.8 kg P + 33.3 kg K/ha recorded significantly higher green fodder (36.2 t/ha) and dry fodder yield (10.2 t/ha). Net returns ( 32,990/ha) and benefit: cost ratio (1.83) also improved with this treatment. Among cutting management practices, double cut recorded significantly higher green and dry fodder yields than single-cut practice. Double-cut practice registered higher net returns ( 30,634/ha) and benefit: cost ratio (1.7).

Characterization of Pre-Breeding Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Germplasm for Stripe Rust Resistance Using Field Phenotyping and Genotyping

Wheat is highly affected by stripe rust disease, particularly under cooler environments, and the losses can reach up to 100 percent depending on the intensity of infection and the susceptibility of the genotype. The most effective method to manage this disease is the use of resistant varieties. In the present study, 192 wheat genotypes were evaluated for stripe rust resistance under field conditions and also in a laboratory using molecular markers. These lines included pre-breeding germplasm developed for rust resistance and some high-yielding commercially grown wheat varieties. Out of 192 genotypes, 53 were found to be resistant, and 29 showed moderate resistance reaction under field conditions, whereas the remaining genotypes were all either moderately susceptible or susceptible. Under controlled conditions, out of 109 genotypes, only 12 were found to be resistant to all the six virulent/pathogenic pathotypes. Additionally, a selection of 97 genotypes were found resistant in field screening and were subjected to molecular validation using the markers linked to major R-genes, viz., Yr5, Yr10, Yr15 and Yr17. Nine genotypes possessed the Yr5 gene, twelve had the Yr10 gene, fourteen had the Yr15 gene and thirty-two had the Yr17 gene. The resistance genes studied in the current study are effective in conferring resistance against stripe rust disease. The genotypes identified as resistant under both field and controlled conditions can be used as sources in stripe rust resistance breeding programs.

Analysis and Farmers Perception of Climate Change Trends in Kashmir Region of Union Territory-Jammu & Kashmir, India: North Western Himalayas

Abstract Analysis of climatic variables is important for detection and attribution of climate change trends and has received a considerable attention from researchers across the globe including India. Kashmir valley of newly formed Union Territory Jammu & Kashmir situated in north western part of India is having a rich repository of glaciers, a small change in the precipitation and temperature management could introduce about environmental, agricultural and economic penalties. To this end, current study aims to analyse changing patterns in precipitation and temperature variables over the various elevation zones of the Kashmir Valley using long term precipitation and temperature data obtained from National Data Centre, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune for the period of 40 years (1980–2019). The results revealed that average mean minimum and maximum temperature of the Kashmir valley has increased substantially at a rate of 0.02 o C/year. Warming trends has been observed in all seasons, however, winter and spring season temperatures have shown statistically significant increasing trends. In addition, mean maximum and minimum temperature in plain and mountain areas have reported higher rates of increase in comparison to Karewah’s and foothill areas of Kashmir. Study of annual precipitation results for the same period indicates a diminishing pattern with a rate of -5.01 mm/year. Seasonal precipitation was also found decreasing at rate of -4.95, -0.30, -0.28 and − 0.06 mm/year for the spring, winter, autumn and summer seasons respectively and at different elevation zones, higher rates of precipitation decline have been observed in the mountainous area, which can be very detrimental to the agricultural crops of the Kashmir valley through water supply, climate regulation and ground water recharge. Further, the above statistical test results of increase in temperature and decrease in precipitation over different topographical zones of Kashmir were corroborated with the information attained from interview and involvement of the small farmer holders of 06 different locations representing the whole Kashmir and has been discussed in this paper to get a clearer understanding of climate change related instability and patterns in weather variables in the Kashmir Valley.

IDENTIFICATION OF EFFECTIVE FERTILITY RESTORERS IN RICE UNDER TEMPERATE CONDITIONS OF KASHMIR VALLEY

Exploitation of hybrid vigour is one of the most important applications of genetics in agriculture.It has highly contributed to food security, without affecting the environment.The availability of effective restorer lines that combines well with the CMS lines for various agro-morphological traits, determines the success of hybrid rice technology under temperate conditions like Kashmir Valley.To identify the best performing lines of rice in different cross combinations, four CMS lines and 34 genotypes were characterized for various agro-morphological and fertility restoration related traits.Out of 136 crosses, 43 (31.6%) were found to show the fertility restoration and 30 (22.06%) were found to be partial restorers.Sixty-three (46.32%) cross combinations were found to be partial maintainers and no cross combination was found to exhibit the maintainer behaviour.The genotypes RL-2, RL-3 and RL-8 were found to show restoration across all the CMS lines.Analysis of variance indicated the existence of significant differences among the genotypes, revealing that sufficient variability is present for different traits.The maximum positive value of st and ard heterosis for grain yield was recorded in SKUA-7A × RL-3.The marker-based assay using Rf3 and Rf4 linked markers was also carried out to validate the genes responsible for fertility restoration.The genotypes RL-1, RL-2, RL-5, RL-9, RL-11 and RL-12 showed polymorphism with all the markers.Sixteen hybrids showed fertility restoration behaviour with all the markers as well as under the field condition.Among these, 8 fall in the class of top 10 heterotic hybrids in the present study.The heterotic hybrids were evaluated for grain and cooking quality features.Out of the top 10 heterotic hybrids evaluated, nine were of medium to short grain types and only one SKUA-19A × RL-5 was of long grain type.Heterotic hybrids along with their parents showed intermediate amylose content which is preferable.

Response of Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Cultivars to Variable Rate of Nitrogen under Wet Direct Seeding in Temperate Ecology

Transplanting rice appears to pose many problems, including depletion of freshwater reservoirs and competition for labor. Conversely, direct seeding allows us to overcome shortcomings associated with conventional transplanting. Nitrogen is a crucial nutrient needed for plant growth and yield. Therefore, this study was executed to analyze the influence of nitrogen on the performance of rice genotypes grown by direct seeding in wet soil. The experiment comprised various rice cultivars, i.e., Shalimar Rice-1, Shalimar Rice-3, Shalimar Rice-4, and Jhelum, and nitrogen (N) levels, i.e., 0, 90, 120, and 150 kg/ha. Shalimar Rice-4 produced a maximum grain yield (6.39 t/ha), followed by Shalimar Rice-3 and Jhelum). The application of 150 kg N/ha showed maximum values for growth parameters, yield attributing traits, and grain yield (6.68 t/ha); however, it remained at par with 120 kg N/ha. Crop water productivity was highest in Shalimar Rice-4 (0.49 kg/m3), and the same showed a consistent increase with increasing N levels from 0–150 kg/ha, with a comparable value of 0.49 to 0.51 recorded at 120 and 150 kg N/ha. Moreover, the Shalimar Rice-1 variety required the maximum in growing degree days (GDD) and helio-thermal units (HTU) to attain different phenological stages till physiological maturity (131 days). However, the cultivar Shalimar rice-4 (SR-4) performed better by registering significantly higher heat use efficiency (HUE) (4.44 kg/ha °C/day). Additionally, the highest net return and the benefit-cost ratio were registered by Shalimar Rice-4. B:C ratio of 1.75 was realized from application of 150 kg N/ha, which remained very close to that achieved with 120 kg N/ha. In conclusion, the rice cultivar Shalimar Rice-4 with the application of 120 kg N/ha could boost rice production under DSR in water-scarce regions of temperate northern India.

Effect of sowing dates, fertility levels and cutting managements on growth, yield and quality of oats (Avena sativa L.)

A two year study was conducted during rabi seasons of 2009-10 and 2010-11 at Research Farm of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir to find out the influence of sowing dates, fertility levels and cutting management on growth, yield and quality of oats. The results revealed that September 30 sowing recorded significant improvement in green fodder yield over October 10 sowing. Crude protein content was highest in October 10 sown crop, whereas crude fibre was highest in September 20 sown crop. The fertility level of 150:70:40 (N:P2O5:K2O kg ha-1) significantly increased both green and dry fodder yield as well as crude protein content over 125:60:30 and 100:50:20 (N:P2O5:K2O kg ha-1), however crude fibre content significantly decreased with increase in fertility level. Double cut crop recorded 14.75 and 16.24% increase in green fodder yield and 3.70 and 1.36% in dry fodder yield over single cut crop during 2009-10 and 2010-11, respectively. Moreover, double cut crop recorded higher crude protein content but lower crude fibre content. The genus Avena is very large and highly diverse and contains both wild and cultivated species of polyploidy series with a basic chromosome number of n = 7. Preservation of plant genetic resources is an essential tool for securing them for diverse utilisation in the future. They include commercial plant varieties (both currently available and those developed in the past) as well as traditional local plant varieties, landraces, wild material and breeding lines. The genetic base from which many of our present day varieties have been derived is quite narrow and frequently, pedigrees trace back to varieties. It has recently been demonstrated that allelic diversity at particular loci, rather than average genetic diversity, is sensitive to oat breeding practices. Base broadening of the present cultivated gene pool by introducing novel germplasm is becoming increasingly important and can be achieved in a number of different ways. Incorporation of exotic germplasm is the best means to enhance the genetic base of oat crop substantially with desirable grain quality and fodder yield. Various developments, including the introduction of intellectual property rights (IPR), have changed the ways in which plant genetic resources (PGR)are utilized by agriculture on a global basis. Now the whole scenario of this crop is changed because of highly nutritious for human consumption. To work hard in this crop, exploitation of genetic resources, wild relatives and innovative techniques for improvement of this crop for fodder as well as for human consumption.
