Antifungal activities and chemical characterization of neem leaf extracts on the growth of some selected fungal species in vitro culture medium.

The efficacy of different extracts of neem leaf on seed borne fungi Aspergillus , Rhizopus and chemical characterization of the neem leaf extracts were studied in vitro on the culture medium. The growth of both the fungal species was inhibited significantly (p<0.01) and controlled with both alcoholic and water extract of all ages and of the concentrations used. The alcoholic extracts of neem leaf was most effective in comparison to aqueous extract for retarding the growth of Rhizopus and Aspergillus. The crude aqueous and alcoholic leaf extracts of neem was more effective in inhibitions of growth of the fungi Aspergillus in comparison to inhibitory effects on Rhizopus growth in the artificial culture medium. Leaf extracts of neem which are cheap and environmentally safe are promising for protecting crop species against the fungal infestation and leading towards improvement of the crop in terms of yield and productivity. @ JASEM

Effect of replacement of concentrate mixture protein with stylo meal on intake, nutrient utilization and growth performance of crossbred heifers

Growing crossbred (15) heifers (average BW 201.96±4.2 kg), randomly divided into 3 equal groups of 5 animals each, were offered a composite ration of wheat straw and concentrate mixture and/or stylo meal to investigate the effect of replacing concentrate mixture with stylo meal on feed intake, nutrient utilization and growth performance. The animals of control group (T1) were fed wheat straw and concentrate based diets as per requirement while in T2 and T3 groups, CP of concentrate mixture was replaced with stylo meal by 50% and 100%, respectively. All the animals were under this feeding regime for 120 days and a metabolism trial was conducted towards the end of experimental feeding. Average daily dry matter intake (DMI) was higher in T2 and the values being 5.89, 6.34 and 5.93 kg in T1, T2 and T3, respectively. DCP intakes in T1 and T2 were sufficient for daily gain of 600g, while it was sufficient for 500g only in T3. TDN intake was significantly higher in T2 than T1 or T3. N balance (g/d) and daily live weight gain (g) was nonsignificantly higher in T1 and T2 than T3. Plasma glucose, protein and urea N were within the normal physiological range in all the groups. It was concluded that 100% concentrate crude protein could be replaced with stylo meal safely and inexpensively, however, for achievement of optimum growth performance, 50% CP of concentrate should be replaced with stylo meal in the diet of crossbred heifers.

Comparative nutrient utilization and growth performance of Bhadawari and Murrah buffalo calves under grazing

Comparative nutrient utilization and growth performance were studied in Bhadawari and Murrah buffalo calves (6 each) under grazing with supplementation of concentrate mixture (1% of body weight) and wheat straw ad libitum at stall from July to September. The pasture crude protein content reduced from 6.82% to 5.88% whereas NDF content increased from 69.54% to 72.27% with advancement of maturity of pasture from July to September. Total DMI was comparable in Bhadawari and Murrah buffaloes. DM intake from pasture was also comparable; however, pasture intake as percentage of total DMI was higher in Bhadawari than Murrah buffalo calves. Digestibility of DM, OM and CP were comparable in Bhadawari and Murrah buffalo calves. NDF and ADF digestibility were higher in Bhadawari than Murrah buffaloes though not statistically significant. DCP intake (g/d) was higher (271 vs 225) in July in both the breeds as compared to September (218 vs 197) whereas TDN intake was similar for both the periods. Daily live weight gain (g/d) was significantly higher in Murrah buffalo than Bhadawari buffalo calves. Thus it was concluded that nutrient utilization was similar under grazing with supplementation in both the breeds however, daily live weight gain was higher in Murrah when compared with Bhadawari buffalo calves.

Mineral status of some commonly available trees and shrubs in rangeland

The study was carried out to assess the mineral status of some commonly available shrubs (Helicteres isora, Ehretia aspera, Zizyphus xylopyrus, Securinega virosa, Desmanthus virgatus, Dichrostachys cinerea, Acacia catechu, Grewia optiva and Sesbania sesban) and tree leaves (Azadirachta indica, Moras alba, Ficus religiosa, Hardwickia binata, Albizia lebbek, Derris indica, Dalbergia sissoo and Acacia nilotica) in the rangeland. Shrubs and tree leaves were adequate in calcium (0.92–4.37%), magnesium (0.15–0.92%) and potassium (0.46–2.07%), while inadequate in sodium (0.01–0.08%) and phosphorus (0.09–0.26%). Trace mineral status revealed adequate copper (6.05 - 24.45 ppm), cobalt (0.05–0.70 ppm) and molybdenum (1.05–4.20 ppm) and high iron (269.5 -940 ppm) content. Range shrubs were moderate source of manganese while poor source of zinc except Ehretia aspera, Zizyphus xylopyrus, Securinega virosa and Acacia catechu which were eich in zinc (40–90.2 ppm). Since, shrubs and tree leaves are deficient in minerals like phosphorus, sodium, manganese and zinc, so need to be supplemented in the diet of ruminants, while feeding these shrubs and tree leaves.
