Electrochemical behaviour of the alloy Ti₆₀Ni₄₀after ion beam irradiation

Electrochemical studies were performed using a potentiodynamic polarisation method and weight loss method on the irradiated and unirradiated specimens of the alloy Ti60Ni40 in 1 M HNO3 aqueous medium. The irradiation was carried out using Ni11+ 150 MeV ions at a fluence of 1×1013 ions/cm2. The X-ray diffraction pattern depicts that the alloy Ti60Ni40 was amorphous in nature before irradiation and that after irradiation a nanocrystalline Ti2Ni phase evolves. Polarisation results revealed that the irradiated specimen exhibits less corrosion current density when compared with the unirradiated specimen of the alloy Ti60Ni40. Weight loss data also corroborate the polarisation results. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies were also performed in order to establish the nature of the oxide film formed after the corrosion test. The Ti 2p XPS spectra revealed the presence of Ti2+, Ti3+ and Ti4+ species in the unirradiated specimen, whereas the irradiated specimen contained only Ti2+ and Ti4+. Scanning electron micrographs show that the oxide film formed on the irradiated specimen is more homogeneous compared to the unirradiated specimen of the alloy Ti60Ni40. Hence, the evolution of the nanocrystalline Ti2Ni phase and the absence of Ti3+ species in the oxide film formed on the irradiated specimen result in its superior corrosion resistance when compared with the unirradiated specimen of the alloy Ti60Ni40.

CNT-ZnO Nanocomposite Thin Films: O2 and NO2 Sensing

The CNT-ZnO nanocomposites were synthesized by addition of commercially available MWCNT during growth of ZnO nanoparticles employing a wet chemical route. These nanocomposites were then spin coated and characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, current-voltage characteristics and O2 (5-20%) / NO2 (2-20 ppm) gas sensing at 250°C operating temperature in N2 atmosphere (0.4±0.03 mbar). The addition of CNT in ZnO is found to increase the sensitivity for both O2 and NO2 gas sensing. The 0.1 wt % CNT addition in ZnO is observed to appreciably enhance the NO2 gas sensitivity while 1.0 wt % CNT addition in ZnO showed highest sensitivity for O2 gas detection.

Effect of Structural Morphology on the Electrochemical Behaviour of Ni78Si8B14 alloy in 1 M HNO3 Aqueous Medium

The electrochemical behaviour of air side and wheel side surfaces of the meltspun ribbon Ni 78 Si 8 B 14 was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization method in 1 M HNO 3 aqueous medium at room temperature.It was observed that the corrosion current density on the air side surface was less as compared to the wheel side surface of the specimen of the alloy Ni 78 Si 8 B 14 .The observed behaviour can be related to the surface morphology due to processing of the ribbons.Weight loss studies carried out on these specimens corroborates the polarization results.

A Study on Luminescence Enhancement in Ion Irradiated TiO2/Poly(methyl methacrylate) Nanocomposites

Swift heavy ion induced modification in the optical properties of TiO2/Poly (Methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites is reported in this paper. The as prepared anatase TiO2 nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed in PMMA matrix using solution casting method. These nanocomposites were then irradiated with Ag+12 (120 MeV) ion beam and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, PL and Raman spectroscopy. The PL spectra exhibited an enhanced broad emission peak in visible region (400 nm - 750 nm) while UV-Vis spectroscopy revealed an increased absorption in visible region in irradiated specimen in comparison to unirradiated sample.
