Factors controlling diurnal variation in the isotopic composition of atmospheric water vapour observed in the taiga, eastern Siberia

Abstract Deciduous forest covers vast areas of permafrost under severe dry climate in eastern Siberia. Understanding the water cycle in this forest ecosystem is quite important for climate projection. In this study, diurnal variations in isotopic compositions of atmospheric water vapour were observed in eastern Siberia with isotope analyses of precipitation, sap water of larch trees, soil water, and water in surface organic layer during the late summer periods of 2006, 2007, and 2008. In these years, the soil moisture content was considerably high due to unusually large amounts of summer rainfall and winter snowfall. The observed sap water δ 18 O ranged from −17.9‰ to −13.3‰, which was close to that of summer precipitation and soil water in the shallow layer, and represents that of transpired water vapour. On sunny days, as the air temperature and mixing ratio rose from predawn to morning, the atmospheric water vapour δ 18 O increased by 1‰ to 5‰ and then decreased by about 2‰ from morning to afternoon with the mixing ratio. On cloudy days, by contrast, the afternoon decrease in δ 18 O and the mixing ratio was not observed. These results show that water vapour that transpired from plants, with higher δ 18 O than the atmospheric water vapour, contributes to the increase in δ 18 O in the morning, whereas water vapour in the free atmosphere, with lower δ 18 O, contributes to the decrease in the afternoon on sunny days. The observed results reveal the significance of transpired water vapour, with relatively high δ 18 O, in the water cycle on a short diurnal time scale and confirm the importance of the recycling of precipitation through transpiration in continental forest environments such as the eastern Siberian taiga. Sulfur Isotope Sources of Sulfides of Neoarchean Iron Deposits of the Kostomuksha Greenstone Belt of Karelia, Russia

Abstract The first data on the multi-isotopic S composition of sulfides of the Neoarchean banded iron formations (BIFs) of the Kostomuksha greenstone belt of Karelia (Karelian Craton of the Fennoscandian Shield) formed 2760–2740 Ma ago are presented in this paper. Pyrite associated with fine-grained magnetite has negative δ 34 S (to –7.8‰) and positive Δ 33 S (to +0.7‰) values. Pyrrhotite from stringer-disseminated ores associated with schists exhibits negative values of both δ 34 S (to –6‰) and Δ 33 S (to –0.46‰). Our data provide grounds to suggest that the BIF sulfides sourced photolitic elementary sulfur from the atmosphere, sulfate from seawater, and sulfur from magma. The S isotope ratios of sulfides reflect the interaction between abiotic (atmospheric, hydrothermal) and biotic (microbial dissimilation reduction) processes during the formation of iron deposits of the Kostomuksha greenstone belt of Karelia.

A continuous flow mass spectrometry technique of argon isotope measurement for K/Ar geochronology

Abstract A new method for the measurement of argon isotope composition in a continuous flow of helium for potassium/argon geochronology is described. Extraction of argon from geological samples in multiple‐sample holders was carried out in a chamber by heating with a continuous Nd‐YAG laser. The extracted and pre‐concentrated argon is passed through a chromatographic capillary column in a flow of helium. Argon is separated from possible contaminants in the column and is injected through an open split into the ion source of an isotope ratio mass spectrometer. Measurement of the 36 Ar, 38 Ar and 40 Ar isotopes was carried out in dynamic mode, using a triple‐collector ion detector. These experiments have shown that continuous flow mass spectrometry can be used for the analysis of radiogenic argon in picogram quantities with an accuracy that is satisfactory for the solution of many geochronological problems. The method of argon isotope measurement in a continuous flow of helium is an alternative to the measurement of argon isotopes in the static mode. The sensitivity and accuracy of argon measurement by this method are comparable with those provided by the classical static method. The measurement of argon isotopes in a continuous flow of helium is simpler and more reliable than measurement in the static mode. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
