Assessment of topographical and atmospheric errors in Sentinel 1 derived DInSAR

Differential SAR interferometry (DInSAR) techniques are extensively utilized over decades to monitor and detect surface distortion. Interferometric SAR results obtained from Sentinel 1 data experience phase delay due to interference with the atmospheric water vapour and pressure and DEM is considered as one of the important parameter in topographic phase removal. In the present study, an attempt was made to eradicate the atmospheric errors and to assess the variation of LOS displacement with respect to different DEM. Results concluded GACOS based atmospheric correction eradicate the atmospheric error and help in improving the quality of LOS displacement. Comparison of InSAR results by utilizing SRTM, ALOS and Cartosat DEM and GACOS concluded that LOS displacement varies based on the accuracy of DEM and its resolution with the minimum error identified by utilizing CartoDEM over Kodagu region.

Flood inundation mapping of lower Godavari riverbasin using remote sensing and gis

River Godavari is one of the longest rivers in India, which faces flood almost every monsoon. To generate flood inundation map of lower Godavari River, SRTM DEM of 30m resolution, water level and discharge data are used. Hydrodynamic model is calibrated for the year 2010 and, the calibrated model is validated with the years 2011 and 2012. Percentage accuracy of simulated values show minimum of 89% to a maximum of 99% with respect to observed values.

Geo-Chemical Exploration of Granite Mining Waste Using XRD, SEM/EDX and AAS Analysis

The purpose of the study was to investigate the mineralogical and Heavy Metals (HMs) present in the granite mining soils in Chimakurthy, India. The mineral exploration of mining soils were identified by X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) pattern analysis. However, the morphological features and quantitative HMs were detected by Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersed Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). The relative concentrations of HMs measured by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). In this study, the major minerals were identified as Quartz, Albite, Anorthite, K-Feldspars, Hornblende, Muscovite, Annite, Lepidolite, Illite, Clintonite, Enstatite, Ferrosilite, Kaolinite, Kyanite, Augite, and Phologopite. Moreover, the presence of six HMs such as Chromium (Cr), Cobalt (Co), Nickel (Ni), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn) and Manganese (Mn), and their relative concentrations were measured. The concentrations of HMs in three groups of mining soils were in the range of Cr: 149-177 mg/kg (>100), for Co: 128-175 mg/kg (>50), for Ni: 166-204 mg/kg (>50), for Cu: 288-363 mg/kg (>100), for Zn: 433-548 mg/kg (>200) and for Mn: 714-769 mg/kg (<2000) as compared with maximum permissible levels set by standard organizations (WHO/FAO) limits. The results demonstrated that the HMs concentrations in mining soils were exceeded WHO/FAO limits except for Mn. The study is useful for assessment of environmental impact due to excessive deposition of mineral waste and assessment of the quality of investigated granites based on their mineralogical aspect, particularly in the production of granite stones.

GIS-Based Decision Support System for Village Level

Decision support system (DSS) plays a vital role especially in rural areas to develop rural sector for sustainable development and socio-economic uplifting of the country. To make appropriate decisions and to develop village economy, decision support system is useful for the mandal revenue officer, collector, Surpanch, and different administrators. It deals both spatial and non-spatial data at village level and comprises various ancillary information including mandal maps and village-wise information of Anantapur and Kadapa districts of Andhra Pradesh such as number of houses, male and female, SC/ST/OBC/general (or) OC population, literate and illiterate population, total working and non-working population. Datasets are collected from district collector office, mandal revenue officer (MRO) and inserted in GIS database. This chapter makes an attempt to build features of various decisions at Anantapur and Kadapa districts by integrating various layers of information at village level.

InSAR based deformation mapping of earthquake using Sentinel 1A imagery

Development of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) based satellites provide remedies to major geohazards under critical situations around the world. Sentinel 1A mission with the revisit period of 12 days helps to serve the objective in an effective manner. With the availability of interferometric wide (IW) Swath mode, Sentinel 1A mission is capable of monitoring the surface deformation using interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques. On 12 November 2017, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 occurred in the Iran/Iraq border lead to the enormous disaster reaching over 500 victims. The study focuses on measuring the deformation caused due to earthquakes by using differential SAR interferometry (DInSAR). VV polarization of Sentinel Data and SRTM DEM are used as an input to GMTSAR for the development of interferogram. Based on the results obtained, it is found that a maximum of 85.1 cm deformation occurred and nearly 1500 km2 of the area is severely affected.
