Fast Estimation of Quasi-Steady States of Cyclic Nonlinear Processes Based on Higher-Order Frequency Response Functions. Case Study: Cyclic Operation of an Adsorption Column

A new method for fast approximate calculation of quasi-steady states of cyclic processes is presented. The method is based on the concept of higher-order frequency response functions. The system input is represented in the form of Fourier series, whereas the output is presented in the form of Volterra series. For practical applications, both the input and the output series are approximated by finite-length sums. In this way, the approximate periodic quasi-steady state of the system output is calculated directly, without long numerical integrations. Cyclic operation of an adsorption column with periodic fluctuations of the inlet concentration or/and adsorbent temperature is used as a case study for testing the new method. The necessary frequency response functions (FRFs), up to the third order, are derived, based on the equilibrium dispersion model. The method is tested for sinusoidal and rectangular input changes. The approximate solutions based on the FRFs, up to the third order, and a finite number of input harmonics, are calculated for different input frequencies and amplitudes and compared with the numerical solutions. Very good agreement is obtained.

Nonlinear Frequency Response Analysis of the Ferrocyanide Oxidation Kinetics. Part I. A Theoretical Analysis

In this work, a nonlinear frequency response (NLFR) analysis was used for a first time in a theoretical study of nonlinear behavior of electrochemical (EC) ferrocyanide oxidation as a simple model reaction. Analytical expressions of the first- and second-order frequency response functions (FRFs) are derived. The first-order FRF is equivalent to the EC admittance and contains information about the linear behavior of the system, whereas the second-order FRF contains additional nonlinear information. The influence of different parameters, such as the heterogeneous rate constant, solution resistance, double-layer capacitance, diffusion coefficients of the reacting species, and electrode rotation rate on the characteristics of the first- and second-order FRFs was checked and discussed. It was found that the second-order FRF is more sensitive to the changes of the studied parameters than the first-order FRF. Experimental verification of the NLFR analysis of EC ferrocyanide oxidation is presented in Part II of this work.

Nonlinear frequency response analysis: a recent review and perspectives

The nonlinear frequency response analysis (NFRA) can be seen as an extension of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. NFRA gives a full and detailed representation of the system response and can establish a connection between model parameters and the experimentally observed phenomena. In this article, different theoretical NFRA approaches and the most recent application examples are discussed. A simple electrochemical example is used to showcase the benefits and disadvantages of analyzing the system response by using different approaches. In addition, it was shown how to extract experimental harmonic values and analyze them.

Rigorous Mathematical Modeling of an Adsorption System With Electrothermal Regeneration of the Used Adsorbent

Abstract : The general objective of the project is fundamental mathematical modeling of a complex TSA system with electrothermal desorption step, with absorbers assembled of one or more cartridge-type, radial flow fixed beds and with in-vessel condensation of the desorbed vapor. During the first stage of the project, a 1-D mathematical model of a single cartridge without condensation was developed in Matlab and used for simulation. During the second stage of the project, the complete TSA system, for adsorbers with on and two cartridge, was modeled, using a combination of Femlab and Matlab software. 2-D Femlab models that describe adsorption, electrothermal desorption and electrothermal desorption accompanied with condensation of the desorbed vapor were built and integrated using Matlab, in order to describe and simulate complete TSA cycles. The objective of this, third phase of the project, is to develop mathematical models of another complex configuration, with four parallel annular, radial-flow cartridge-type adsorbers. The analysis of this configuration shows that 3-D models have to be used in order to describe it. The models for adsorption, electrothermal desorption and electrothermal desorption accompanied with condensation of the desorbed vapor are developed again, by using COMSOL Multiphysics (Femlab) 3-D modeling tools.
