Object-Process Methodology: A Holistic Systems Paradigm

From the Publisher: Object-Process Methodology (OPM) is a comprehensive novel approach to systems engineering. Integrating function, structure and behavior in a single, unifying model, OPM significantly extends the system modeling capabilities of current object-oriented methods. Students’ Collaborative Learning Attitudes and Their Satisfaction with Online Collaborative Case-Based Courses

Case-based learning is an interactive group learning approach that embodies the principles of Socratic inquiry. It is a common pedagogy used in many disciplines including business, law, and health. With online learning being the fastest growing segment of higher education, case-based learning is also finding its way into online courses. This research was conducted on a population of 698 students enrolled in online case-based courses. The use of Structural Equation Modelling provided an understanding of the factors that influence student satisfaction. Through Logistics Regression, the extent to which these factors do influence satisfaction was determined. The findings indicate that the greatest predictors of student satisfaction were the interaction and understanding between the students and the instructor. Furthermore, a student’s pre-existing attitude toward interactive group learning is also a significant factor in predicting student satisfaction. The conclusions point to a lack of understanding by students on how to engage in effective interactive online group learning. The recommendation is that training in online collaborative skills be considered as a front-end to any online case-based course.

Eliciting and characterizing scenarios of disclosure of private health data.

Sensitive health information is kept in Electronic Health Records (EHRs) which makes the data accessible, enabling its transfer against patient consent. Hence, the need for privacy-preserving mechanisms is a top priority. As a first step towards the development of privacy-preserving access control language, we used qualitative research methods to characterize scenarios of requests for disclosure of patient data and identify the entities involved, the context of the request, and the requested data.

The use of visual semantic web for designing virtual expeditions

The current paper demonstrates application of visual semantic web for designing virtual expeditions in the framework of cultural heritage preservation. The objective of our project was twofold: 1 to design an interactive platform based on the virtual expedition (VE) methodology, and 2 to assess its usability and impact on users' critical thinking and open-mindedness. Based on the VE methodology, a flash mockup on the life story of two women scientists and their cultural heritage was developed and tested among 107 university students. Findings indicated increase in students' disposition towards open-mindedness, especially related to gender equity. Findings also indicated positive views related to operative, cognitive, and affective aspects of the platform's usability. Students were highly motivated to explore the VE platform and were inclined to discuss issues related to the preservation of their own cultural heritage.
