Adoption of indigenous agricultural practices among the tribal farmers of servarayan hills of Salem district in Tamil Nadu, India

Indigenous agricultural practices are the accumulated skill and knowledge of a locality or a community that has been passed on from one generation to another generation. The paper deals with the indigenous agricultural practices adopted by the tribal farmers of servarayan hills in Salem District of Tamil Nadu, The respondents are selected by proportionate random sampling method. The Practices has been sent to the principle scientist and research experts to identify the indigenous agricultural practices for collected, the data were analyzed by using percentage analysis. The percentage of farmers adopting in different indigenous agricultural practices range of the majority of the tribal respondent’s current duration.

Exploring the E-Discovery Tools on the Use of Library Collections by Users

This paper describes the definitions of e-discovery tools and reviews the existing literature on EBSCO discovery services, Worldcat Local, Summon, Ex Libris Primo, etc. It analyses them and the creation of cumulative indexes for searching the different types of databases like OPAC, publishers DBs, Open Access data and the different types of features available in each of the e-discovery tools. It also studied the library professionals' involvement and the user's satisfaction towards the usage of e-discovery tools. The study emphasized the assistance required for the users, particularly in relation to the need to evaluate information. Web-scale discovery creation by LIS professionals is an innovation in online searching of library collections. Many libraries are currently adopting discovery systems, but few have begun to explore and recognize the potential for a new era of instructional possibilities. The features are explained with the use of Worldcat, the EBSCO Discovery Services (EDS), Summon, VuFind and the benefits of other discovery tools such as Primo by library staff.

Implications of Social Networks: Access to Resources

This article deals with the history and definitions of social networking. The properties of social networking are discussed, which aims for improving communication and contacts with others, who are not known/seen physically. The characteristics like persistency, searchability, replicability and invisible audiences are discussed in detail. Different types of social networking available in different region/countries are outlined with discussions on some of the social networks. Applications of social networks vary from Government, business, medical, dating, educational and library, which are given with few examples. The access to resources in library context is emphasized more in detail, with the technological support for social networking like increasing customer satisfaction, allowing customers to connect with experts, understand and visualize the communication path and sharing the knowledge with others. Some of the implications are enumerated in detail, with the consequences of social networking also. It has concluded that in future if the libraries adopt social networking techniques form the users, it would be more beneficial and better interaction with the users will be for providing the services from the library environment.

Use and impact of electronic resources by information science students at Jimma University, Jimma, Ethiopia

Purpose This paper aims to describe the use of electronic resources and services provided at the social science library of Jimma University, Jimma. The paper is focused to find out the use of those resources by the students of information science and how frequently they are using, from where the information is accessed. Also, they have been requested about their preferences between an electronic and print journal format. Design/methodology/approach The questionnaire method is used for collecting the data from the undergraduate students of information science (2015/2016 batch). The questionnaire was distributed to 182 students, and the response rate 81.32 per cent was encouraging. Findings It has been found that the usage of e-journals is increasing; this is due to awareness among the students of information science about the e-resources and services. Owing to an easy access available at various places in the university, they are accessing these resources at hostels and departments more as compared to the library. Their visits to library have decreased. Research limitations/implications The study has been limited to Jimma University undergraduate students of information science only Practical implications It suggests for future improvised solutions. Originality/value The present paper will help other institutions to understand the need for library electronic resources and motivate them to update their resources in the larger interest of the students. The paper also indicates how a suitably designed survey can show the awareness and use of types of information services, in this case, e-journals. There is a dearth of such studies in India and abroad. The methodology and findings can be applied to other libraries to reveal similar trends, as well as comparisons.

Chickpea, Pigeonpea, And Groundnut

Of ThE grain legumes, chickpea, pigconpea, and groundnut are some of the most important crops in the scmiarid tropics. Groundnut has received considerable research attention in developed and developing countries but chickpea and pigeonpea have been neglected crops until recently. Even now they receive little attention. Therefore, information relating to the physiological aspects of growth and yield of these two crops is fragmentary. This paper reviews work on the growth, development, and yield of these three crops in relation to management and environmental factors.

Competitive Effects of a Short Duration, Bush Type Cowpea When Intercropped With Cotton in Zimbabwe

SUMMARY Cowpea is an important supplement to the staple diet of maize in Zimbabwe, but its productivity is poor beacuse of pest infestations. This paper reports the results of experiments conducted over two crop seasons on the feasibility of producing a grain crop of cowpea intercropped with cotton to take advantage of cotton's slow initial growth and of drift from insecticides applied to it. Intercropping reduced the yield of cotton by between 11.5 and 73% depending on the type of season and the treatments applied, but the reduction was compensated by the yield of cowpea. The yield reduction was greater in the drier first season and with simultaneous planting of the two crops. Cowpea consistently performed better as an intercrop than as a sole crop, mainly because of the protection it received from the insecticides applied to the cotton.

Effect of Shade and Fertigation on Growth and Yield Attributes of Tomato

Field investigation was conducted at Horticultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore to elucidate the effects of shade and fertigation on growth, yield and quality of tomato hybrid ‘Ruchi’. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. The main plots were open and shade (35 per cent) and the sub-plot treatments included three levels (100, 75 and 50 per cent of recommended dose) each of water soluble and straight fertilizers. The yield parameters like number of fruits per plant, fruit weight and polar and equatorial diameters were the highest at 100 per cent WSF under shade. The highest yield per plot (189.6, 208.4 and 203.7 kg) and per hectare (99.8, 109.5 and 106.7 tonnes) during seasons I, II and III respectively were observed in the treatment with 100 per cent water soluble fertilizer under shaded condition.

EXPLORING THE E-RESOURCES FOR EDUCATIONAL USE

This paper deals with the electronic resources (e-resources) and their different types. The information seeking behavior of students, researchers and faculty in the e-environment are discussed in detail. Explored the open educational resources (OER) created by different organizations are emphasized for open access. Open courseware (OCW), which is available in audio-visual and textual OER are given examples in this paper. Role of library professionals for making the e-resources available to different types of user community is discussed in detail. Impact of students towards e-resources is given with the evaluation of them. It has been concluded that e-resources helps for anytime availability and easy to access, which helps for the researchers to carry out the research on time.
