Sustainable Tourism in India: Challenges and Prospects

Tourism has become one of the largest and fastest growing industries since last few decades.For developing countries it is one of the biggest income generators as a service industry.It is the key driver of socio-economic progress through the creation of jobs and enterprises, infrastructure development and Foreign Exchange earnings.Tourism is one economic sector in India that has the potential to grow at a high rate and ensure consequential economic development.According to the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report India 1 has key strengths for sustainable tourism; linked mainly to cultural endowments.India ranks 12th in the Asian region and 68th globally.The country is well assessed for its natural resources (ranked 8th), and cultural resources (24th), with many World Heritage sites, both natural and cultural, rich fauna, many fairs and exhibitions.Tourism has also contributed to environmental degradation, and habitat fragmentation.Since the emergence of the World Conservation Strategy and Our Common Future, a number of arguments and debates concerning sustainable tourism development (STD) have been presented and also attempted to convert their theoretical framework of sustainable development into practice.The paper is an overview of the present scenario of sustainable tourism, its typology; plan-programme, potentiality and threat with special reference to India.

Housing Condition, Livelihood Pattern and Socio-cultural Life of Oraon, Munda and Santal Tribes in Dooars, Jalpaiguri District, West Bengal: The Migrants from Chota Nagpur Plateau Region

The Oraon, Munda and Santal are the three major Scheduled Tribes of the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. During the colonial period (mainly between 1880 and 1930), their arrival from the Chota Nagpur region to the Dooars region (Jalpaiguri district) took place by the British. In the present article, an attempt has been made to assess housing condition, livelihood pattern and socio-cultural life of the concerned tribes. For this purpose, 650 household surveys were carried out with the help of semi-structured questionnaire, focus group discussion, informal interviews and field visits. The study finds that, after being displaced from their homeland (Chota Nagpur Plateau region) and settled for long in the Jalpaiguri district, they undergone many changes in their habitat, economic condition and society, but it did not bring any improvement in their quality of life. The deplorable residence, lack of housing amenities and necessities, inadequate income, illiteracy, loosening of social organization are the major features presently prevalent among them.

Tribal Economy and Change: A Special Focus of Oraon, Munda and Santal Tribes in Jalpaiguri District, West Bengal

The study focuses on the economy of the three major tribes of Jalpaiguri District, West Bengal.They are Oraon, Munda and Santal.According to 2011 census, three of them comprise 67.44 percent of the total Scheduled Tribe population of the district.All these tribes were brought in the last half of 19 th century and the first half 20 th century by the British to mainly work as labourers in the newly formed tea gardens, railways and in the forests of this region.Tribes from Santal Parganas were brought to settle as agriculturists in this district.In the later stages, after the British left this region, only the ownership of the tea gardens changed.Till now, the major concentration of these tribes is found in the tea garden villages.However, some of them are engaged in agricultural activities outside the tea garden area and others are seen in forest region.The paper seeks to understand the change in the economy of these tribes in spatio-temporal context.The article developed out of extensive fieldwork and based on a primary data interview schedule.For collecting the primary data, 650 households were chosen from all the 13 blocks of the district on the basis of random stratified sampling.The temporal variation of the economy is shown for a period of 30 years.The techniques followed here are: simple cross tabulation and composite index based on Friedman's test by rank.

Pattern of Regional Disparities in the Level of Household Deprivation among the Scheduled Tribes of Eastern India: A District-level Analysis

This study attempted to show regional disparities in the level of deprivation among the Scheduled Tribe population in eastern Indian states (Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal). This work is based on house listing and housing table of Census of India, 2011 and Socio-Economic Cast Census data. The Wroclaw Taxonomic method was employed for measuring the deprivation index. The results show that, out of 110 districts, 55 districts are in a middle-deprived stage and 13 districts are in a highly deprived stage. Among the states, the level of deprivation is very high in Odisha, followed by West Bengal. The situation is quite better in Jharkhand. The study also shows that the districts with little better condition are either situated in agricultural plain, mining centres, power plants or tourism centres. The study also reveals that the areas with the better conditions are either in agricultural plains, mining centres, power plants or tourism centres. As a result, the research recommends enhancing previously existing tribal development programmes as well as regional general development programmes in order to reduce concerns such as tribal, rural and regional deprivation.
